Woman Walks Away From Second Date After He Shows Up Late Again

First dates rarely go exactly as planned, but most people agree that showing respect for someone else’s time is one of the easiest ways to make a good impression. When that basic courtesy is missing more than once, patience can wear thin.

A 30-year-old woman matched with a man who seemed interested enough to plan two dates together. The first meeting started with him arriving just before the movie began, and the communication afterward was inconsistent at best.

Hoping the second date would go more smoothly, she gave him another chance. Instead, she found herself waiting again after he had already confirmed the meeting time. This time, she made a different decision. Scroll down to see why she walked away before the date even began.

'AITAH for walking away from a date?'

I (30F) was talking to Tom (29M). We planned a movie date for our first date.

I arrived a little early but he showed up 3 minutes before the movie was supposed to start.

I was about to buy my own ticket and see the movie by myself. The rest of the date went ok.

He didn’t text me for several days after the date. I sent a joke text as if he had passed away and conversation started again for a day or so.

We planned a second date at a board game lounge.

He didn’t text me until 11 pm the day before our second date. He confirmed the time to meet up a few hours before the date and was 20 minutes...

I only waited 20 minutes because I was enjoying a beverage and looking at the games. I left the establishment and he was outside.

He called after me but I kept walking to my car and ignored his phone call.

I texted him from my car that I was going home and I do not appreciate being kept waiting especially after he confirmed the time.

And my time is valuable and he was being rude. He didn’t respond. Am I the a__hole for how I reacted?

One of the clearest ways people communicate interest during the early stages of dating is through consistency. Grand romantic gestures matter far less than showing up when promised, following through on plans, and demonstrating that another person’s time deserves respect.

In this situation, the OP was not reacting to one late arrival. She was responding to a pattern that suggested she was expected to accommodate effort that was never equally returned.

The emotional conflict centers on reciprocity. During the first date, Tom arrived only minutes before the movie started after minimal communication. He then disappeared for several days, requiring the OP to restart the conversation herself.

Before the second date, the same pattern continued: delayed communication, last-minute confirmation, and then arriving twenty minutes late after agreeing on a specific meeting time. None of these actions alone necessarily prove disinterest or bad intentions.

Together, however, they create an impression that the relationship exists on one person’s schedule while the other is expected to remain flexible.

A different perspective is that walking away was not really about twenty minutes. It was about accumulated information. People often wait too long for unmistakable proof that someone is incompatible, when repeated small behaviors already reveal how that person approaches reliability and consideration.

Tom may have had legitimate reasons for being late, but relationships depend not only on circumstances but also on communication. A quick message explaining the delay or a sincere apology can dramatically change how lateness is perceived. Silence leaves the other person to wonder whether their time mattered at all.

Psychologist John Gottman has found that healthy relationships are built through consistent, everyday behaviors that communicate reliability and responsiveness.

Small moments of following through, responding to bids for connection, and showing consideration often predict relationship satisfaction more accurately than occasional grand gestures because they establish trust over time.

That insight helps explain why the OP’s decision feels understandable. She did not leave because one delay automatically ended the possibility of a relationship.

She left because the second date reinforced concerns raised by the first. By that point, she had enough information to question whether this pattern would continue if the relationship progressed.

The healthiest takeaway is that boundaries are most effective when they reflect personal standards rather than punishment. The OP calmly left, explained why, and went home instead of arguing in public.

Tom may have been dealing with circumstances the OP never learned about, but he also missed multiple opportunities to communicate them. Early dating is often about evaluating compatibility, and mutual respect for each other’s time is a perfectly reasonable standard on which to base that evaluation.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors applauded OP for confidently walking away instead of waiting

SilverShoes-22 − You were a BOSS! Proud of you!!

ConnectWeb5143 − Great job. Not ATA 🎉

ThrowAway4now2022 − I love that you walked right past him! You did not just the right thing but the BEST thing!

These commenters felt the man showed little respect or interest and was not worth pursuing

joesmolik − No, you’re not. He does not value your time and it sounds like it’ll be a chronic problem with him. You were better off walking away from this...

Total-Object-4766 − NTA He's a minimal effort kind of guy. You can do better. Good for you for walking away.

WelshLove − he is obviously not that interested and a jerk good move

These users criticized chronic lateness as a sign of disrespect rather than an unavoidable personality trait

2_Much3636 − NTAH. That wasn't the first time he was late. I've done the same thing myself and I don't like being disrespected.

How do people go through life being late for everything?

ThisRaspberry8474 − NTA. Good for you. Chronically late people often act like it's just their personality quirk or something

they have no control over, when in reality they're simply inconsiderate people who put no value on others' time. Way to shut his s__t down!

CuriousCat1828 − He sounds lame! I would not have waited either…

This user shared a humorous but unexpected story about assuming someone had ghosted them, only to later learn he had died in a car accident

hjo1210 − This is going to sound terrible but a guy I was supposed to meet for a 3rd date ghosted me.

I sent him a text asking if he was dead cause if he wasn't he was incredibly rude.

Turns out he really *was* dead, his sister called me and told me he had been in a car accident.

She invited me to the funeral and sent me a link to his obituary. Learned a lesson that day. He totally wasted my time 😂
