Woman Walks Straight Into A Man At Penn Station, Then Acts Like He’s The Problem

Most people understand that crowded public places require a little patience and awareness. But every now and then, someone manages to turn the simplest interaction into a moment that leaves everyone wondering what they were thinking.

The original poster was waiting at Penn Station when a stranger approached him in a nearly empty area of the hall. Despite having plenty of space around him, the woman insisted that he move out of her way. What happened next was not just about walking around someone.

Her response turned a small inconvenience into a surprisingly rude encounter that the poster could not believe actually happened. Read on to find out why this brief interaction left him questioning basic manners.

A man standing in a nearly empty station is shocked when a stranger chooses to walk through him instead of around

'Too big to miss'

I’m a big boy (6’3”, 250 lbs). I was standing in the middle of Penn Station waiting for my daughter.

A woman is about 40 yards away and walking toward me holding the hand of a little boy.

I am standing stock still with my two bags on the floor while texting and looking at my phone.

I notice this woman is walking toward me and getting closer and closer.

She finally gets right up to me and says, “Excuse me. Let me by.”

I look around the unusually empty train station and see the spot where I’m standing is WIDE open,

like 25 feet to my left and 40 feet to my right are totally empty.. I said, “In this entire train hall, you can’t veer to either side and go...

She just snorts, steps 1/2 step to my right, drags her little wheelie bags OVER MY FOOT and goes on her way..

Didn’t hurt, no damage done, but the bag almost tips over so she clearly knew what she did.. Just stunning how entitled she was.

Small moments of disrespect can feel surprisingly frustrating because they often reveal something larger than the action itself. Most people understand that public spaces require a little patience and awareness, especially in busy places where strangers constantly need to move around each other.

What bothers people is often not the inconvenience itself, but the feeling that someone treated them as if their presence did not matter.

In this situation, the OP was not upset because someone needed to pass by. In a crowded train station, asking someone to move would be completely reasonable. The frustration came from the contrast between the request and the circumstances.

The area around him was mostly empty, yet the woman chose to approach directly, demand space, and then pull her luggage over his foot instead of simply walking around. The physical contact was minor, but the lack of acknowledgment made the interaction feel unnecessarily rude.

A different perspective is that public spaces create different perceptions of personal space. The woman may have been focused on navigating with a child and luggage, worried about getting through quickly, or simply unaware of how close she was getting.

People often operate on autopilot in transportation hubs, where everyone is distracted and trying to reach their destination. That does not excuse ignoring someone’s space, but it shows how small misunderstandings can become moments of conflict when neither person pauses to consider the other’s perspective.

Psychologist Daniel Kahneman has explored how people often rely on quick judgments and automatic thinking when navigating everyday situations. His work on cognitive biases shows that humans frequently make decisions without fully processing the context around them, which can lead to misunderstandings and incorrect assumptions about others’ intentions.

This insight helps explain why interactions like this can become irritating. The woman’s action may not have come from a deliberate desire to disrespect OP, but from a failure to notice that another person was also occupying the space. However, intent does not erase impact. A simple “excuse me” followed by walking around would have avoided the entire situation.

At the same time, moments like this are rarely worth carrying for long. Public interactions involve thousands of tiny decisions from strangers, and not all of them will be thoughtful.

The healthiest response is often to recognize the rudeness, protect your own boundaries when needed, and then let the encounter end rather than allowing a stranger’s poor manners to occupy your day.

Courtesy in shared spaces is built on a simple idea: everyone around you is a person, not an obstacle. A few extra steps, a little awareness, and basic consideration can prevent unnecessary frustration for everyone.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

They shared similar stories where they reacted to careless people invading their space

HoneyedVinegar42 − Admittedly, if that had happened to me, I'd probably have deliberately moved my foot and \*made\* it tip over.

kegido − Similar happened to me on Amtrak, I was standing still waiting for someone to pull their bag out of the luggage rack,

princess was in a hurry and went around me running her bag over my foot, So I kicked her bag HARD.

She looked back somewhat surprised, I said “I’m sorry I didn’t see your bag standing there” her face turned red and she ran off the train.

They believed the person’s actions showed entitlement and deliberate disrespect.

Salty-Objective3489 − That's not just entitlement, that's almost an act of aggression. In a completely empty hall,

she chose to walk straight at you and then intentionally step on your foot? Absolutely unbelievable.

Some people truly believe the world should mold around them.

CrushRipple − She had 40 yards to course-correct and still chose violence.

They related the experience to being tall and facing similar public situations

MasterAnthropy − Not her fault BB - she got caught in your gravitational field! !

All seriousness  I feel ya (I'm 6'5 & 370) . .. this stuff happens more often than an average sized person may appreciate.

They described a sidewalk encounter where someone ignored personal space

SpicelessKimChi − Ooh this a good one that happened to me the other day. Earlier this week I was running on the sidewalk,

the same route I take four times a week mostly without incident. Its not a narrow sidewalk as its also made to be a multi-use path for walkers, runners and...

An older woman was walking on the other side of the sidewalk and a younger man who was clearly with her was walking kind of in the middle.

As i was getting closer I noticed he was crowding me, moving over slightly with each step to the point where there was

enough room to go between them, but I though that'd be rude so I kept adjusting course so we didnt just slam into each other.

As I went to the very edge of my side of the sidewalk he was so close that we shouldered each other. The funny part is its super hot and...

when our arms hit it made this loud "SPLORT" sound and I felt sweat splatter up and hit me. But it was my sweat. He said "hey man what the...

I looked back and he was mopping his arm off. I just thought "thats pretty f__king gross" but didnt slow down or do anything

but kind of wave as I went back to my run. I dont know if he legit didnt even see me

or if he was intentionally trying to get in my way. Like. l, whats the end game there?

They asked whether tall people mind helping shorter people reach items

patty202 − Off topic, but do tall people mind when short people ask for help reaching things on the top shelves?

They compared this behavior to customers expecting employees to move

Successful_Club3005 − That kind of happens to employees in their own stores.

Electric carts Customers will ride them straight towards the employee & expect the employee to get out of their way

eventhough there is more than enough space for them to go around.

They criticized people who avoid simple polite requests like saying “excuse me.”

PurpleSloth1025 − I was in a nail salon waiting in the seating area, which was very cramped and narrow.

Another woman was sitting on the other side waiting, too. There was a table in front of the chairs that were lined up along the wall.

She got up and stood next to me while I was seated.

Apparently, that was my signal to move out of her way so she could get by.

I waited for her to say excuse me, but instead, she stepped over my legs to get past me.

I have come across the most ignorant entitled people in public. So many rude ass idiots can't fathom saying, excuse me.

They shared a shopping experience involving unnecessary crowding

octopustentacles209 − I was in a tiny isle shopping, with many empty isles around me

and this lady decided her and her cart needed to squeeze into my isle and behind me.

I was literally pinned against the display while she mauvered her cart around me.

She needed something in the next (empty) Isle. People have 2 brain cells that fight, in their heads.

Sometimes the strangest public encounters are not caused by crowded spaces or unavoidable accidents.

They happen because someone chooses not to show basic awareness.

Whether the woman was careless or intentionally rude, many people agreed on one thing: walking directly into someone when there is plenty of room around them is a strange choice.

Have you ever experienced someone ignoring obvious space around you and making a situation more difficult than it needed to be? Share your story below.
