Woman’s Infertile Sister-In-Law Demands Her Baby, But The Family Draws The Line

by Leona Pham
July 30, 2026
in Social Issues

Infertility can bring unimaginable grief, but grief does not give anyone the right to cross boundaries or claim someone else’s child.

Sometimes a heartbreaking situation can reveal just how quickly emotions can spiral into something dangerous.

The original poster (OP) never expected a family dinner to turn into a nightmare.

After years of tension with her sister-in-law, OP was stunned when her SIL, devastated by infertility, demanded that OP hand over her newborn daughter for part of each week so she could experience motherhood.

What started as an uncomfortable family moment quickly became a serious safety concern.

Read on to discover how OP and her family handled the shocking situation.

Mother is shocked when her sister-in-law’s grief over infertility leads to an unexpected demand involving her baby

Woman’s Infertile Sister-In-Law Demands Her Baby, But The Family Draws The Line
not the actual photo

'Entitled SIL wants custody of my baby?'

Background: Me (36f) SIL (40f)

I’ve been married to her brother for over 10 years and there’s always been some jealousy

and resentment from her. She’s always felt like I had the life she wanted, not necessarily

with her brother, but the marriage, family, job stability etc. I have 3 kids 10f, 8m, 3 months female.

She got married last year and they decided to start trying for a baby, but she was

unfortunately told that she can’t have children naturally. She was understandably

devastated and the family comforted her as best as we could.. We recently had a family

dinner and in the middle of it she says

“Angel698 I think it’s really unfair that you got to have 3 kids and I can’t have any. Your baby

is my last chance to raise a child so I think you should give her to me during the week so I

can create a motherly bond with her and you can have her on weekends.”

Before I could respond the entire table erupted with everyone talking at once so I took my

older kids upstairs. When I got back to the dining room her husband was asking what the

hell is wrong with her and why would she even think to ask that. She was trying to justify

herself when I asked them to leave. I also said that she’s no longer welcomed at my house

or around my children until she gets help. She started screaming that I don’t deserve my

life or my children and that I stole her baby from her.

Her husband and MIL kept apologizing and dragged her out of the house still crying and

screaming. Now my kids want to know why their aunt wants to take the baby.. Edit:. I’ve

been reading the comments but it’s too many to reply to so here are a few points.. 1. We

have a security system and cameras already installed and no one has keys to our house

2. I will not be able to get a restraining order as this one incident isn’t enough to justify it.

3. My husband and I spoke to the older kids about it the same night and we’ll be having

another talk with them to reinforce that SIL is not a safe person anymore.

4. Our country does not have the right to bear arms and I also have no interest in getting a

gun.. 5. I’ll be informing the school and daycare of the issue and giving them her photo.

For those questioning the validity of the post I completely understand. If I had heard about

this last week I wouldn’t believe it either, but it’s unfortunately the situation I’m currently dealing with.

UPDATE 1: TLDR Sister in Law found out she can’t have kids and demanded that I give her

my baby every week.

So my sister in law has been admitted to a psychiatric facility. In the comments of my

previous post I mentioned that her husband was seeking out counseling for them to deal

with the infertility prior to this incident. After the incident he sought out a psychiatrist

rather than a counselor and they had their first session last week. I didn’t get the specifics

of what happened but basically she made some statements that the psychiatrist felt

indicated she was a danger to others (my baby and me) and she was placed under an involuntary hold.

My BIL has been nothing but apologetic through this entire ordeal and he kept her away

from us since the incident. MIL was staying with them to keep an eye on SIL. She tried to

leave the house in the middle of the night to see ‘her baby’. Also BIL found her researching

how to induce lactation and she said it was to make sure she can feed the baby properly

when I come to my senses and give her up.

From what BIL has said seeing me breastfeed is apparently what triggered the entire

episode. It was the first time SIL was around the baby for any length of time and she was

holding her when she got fussy because she was hungry. Naturally I took her to feed her

and this made SIL feel inadequate because it triggered the thought that she would never

be able to do that which lead to the events of the last post.

I’m grateful for all the advice that was offered on my last post as some of it was really

helpful. We won’t be moving as it’s not feasible for us at the moment but we have taken

extra steps with security both at home and at the kids’ school/daycare.

This whole thing is taking a toll on the family but MIL, FIL and BIL are taking care of SIL and

my husband and I are focused on ensuring the safety of our immediate family and

minimizing the effect on the kids as much as we can.

UPDATE 2: I’ve had a few messages asking how things are going so I decided to update.

I have not seen SIL since the incident happened and I also blocked her on my socials. My in-

laws have been amazing through this entire situation and are not sharing any information

about our family with her. Unfortunately she still remains fixated on my baby, she tried to

find out where the daycare is and even threatened to hurt herself if my in-laws didn’t tell

her. This lead to another stint in the psych ward. She wrote me a letter begging me to ‘be

fair and let her see her baby’. I didn’t actually receive the letter though, my MIL read it and

just gave us the gist of its contents.

SIL’s husband is working with her psychiatrist to see how best she can be helped, but he

has said he doesn’t know how long he can deal with this but he’s giving it 6 months. It’s a

very sad situation for her and I had hoped she would be able to deal with whatever is

happening. At this point we’re completely no contact with her. We explained to our older

kids that their aunt isn’t well so she won’t be around anymore. We still see MIL and FIL

regularly so I’m grateful we didn’t have to cut them off.

We spent the holidays with my family and it was all very nice and uneventful. We’re still on

alert in case she escalates, but the hospital where she’s warded isn’t near us and they don’t

live near us either. So we’ve accepted this is our new reality and we’re operating accordingly.

UPDATE 3: So lots of people have been messaging and commenting asking for an update.

Firstly my family and I are safe. SIL was eventually released from hospital to continue out

patient treatment with a psychiatrist and she’s on some meds. My husband met up with

her, her husband, MIL and FIL to get a feel of her mental state. She was very apologetic and

seems to understand the issue with her previous behaviour. She asked to see the kids and I,

but that was of course a no and my husband let her know that she will have no access to us

for the foreseeable future.

Since she was discharged MIL has been awesome about letting us know when she would

be at their house so we wouldn’t run into her accidentally. MIL also told my husband a few

days ago that SIL has been saying it’s hard not being able to see the kids. She told him for

information’s sake and not to guilt him into changing our boundaries. SIL and her husband

are looking into migrating to give her some distance in hopes that it will help her healing.

I’m hoping for the best for their future, but it will be a future without my kids and I in it.

My husband had been a rockstar throughout all of this. He had one meeting with his family

so he could see for himself where she was mentally because so far everything we’ve

gotten has been through MIL. They’re not hanging out and acting like everything is fine.

One of the most painful experiences a person can face is watching someone they love struggle while also realizing they must protect themselves from that person.

Compassion and boundaries can exist at the same time, but finding that balance becomes incredibly difficult when family relationships are involved.

In this situation, the OP was not simply dealing with a hurt relative who was grieving infertility.

She was confronted with a deeply emotional and unsettling demand involving her newborn child.

Her sister-in-law’s pain was understandable; infertility can bring feelings of grief, loss, and even mourning for a future someone imagined having.

However, that grief crossed a serious boundary when it turned into the belief that another person’s baby could fill that empty space.

For the OP, the issue was not just the request itself, but the fear and instability behind it.

A parent’s protective instincts naturally become stronger when their child’s safety and emotional security are involved.

A different perspective is that the sister-in-law’s behavior appears less like simple jealousy and more like an unhealthy attempt to cope with profound loss.

People experiencing major emotional trauma sometimes become focused on what they believe will remove their pain.

In her mind, the baby represented motherhood, purpose, and the life she felt she had lost.

However, intense grief does not make harmful actions acceptable.

Feeling empathy for someone’s suffering does not require ignoring threatening behavior or sacrificing personal boundaries.

This insight helps explain why the OP’s response was understandable.

She was able to recognize that her sister-in-law was suffering while also accepting that the situation had become unsafe.

The later updates show an important distinction: the family sought professional help for the sister-in-law rather than simply labeling her as a bad person.

At the same time, the OP maintained distance and prioritized her children’s security.

The situation is tragic because there are no easy winners.

The sister-in-law is facing a painful emotional crisis, while the OP is dealing with fear, betrayal, and the loss of a family relationship she likely hoped would remain positive.

Supporting someone through a mental health struggle does not mean giving them access to situations they are not ready to handle.

Ultimately, this story highlights that love without boundaries can become harmful.

Families can offer support, encourage treatment, and hope for healing while still protecting the people who depend on them.

Sometimes the most compassionate choice is not opening the door again immediately, but allowing time, treatment, and accountability to rebuild trust.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters urged OP to prioritize safety by adding security measures

Pretzelmamma − Jesus. Stay safe! At least the rest of the family recognise her craziness.

Beautiful_Delivery77 − If she ever goes to daycare make sure they know she is not allowed

to pick up your daughter. I would also contact the school your other children attend just in

case. She sounds unhinged. Yes the entire family agrees she needs help but if still be

careful because you never know what she might do.

If you don’t already have one, get a video doorbell.

nickis84 − Omg. But words are not enough for a woman that has baby fever especially if

she refuses to get help. Get cameras and if you use childcare or sitters leave implicit

instructions that under no circumstances is sil not allowed to take baby.

FairyFartDaydreams − Your SIL is mentally unwell and needs help. Tell the older kids that

Auntie needs help because her thinking is wrong. Encourage everyone to encourage her to

get help. Get cameras for the outside of the house and tell your kids if Auntie tries to talk

to them and you or Dad are not around to come get you or dad right away.

Also tell them the baby is staying with you not to worry about what Auntie said when she

had mixed up thoughts. Make sure any caregivers know Auntie is not allowed around the

kids, especially the baby

The_Crown_And_Anchor − She needs professional help I would not necessarily hold this

against her if she gets the help that she needs However. ..if there is any chance that SIL has

access to a house key, you should have your locks changed so that she can't kidnap your child somehow

Next_Back_9472 − She’s convinced herself that your baby is hers, hence why you have

stolen her baby. She is legit mentally ill and needs professional help ASAP, this not about

jealousy it’s way bigger than that. I would get surveillance cameras at home and wouldn’t

let the kids out of your sight, not even to have the grandparents look after them, it’s not safe.

Mehitabel9 − She started screaming that I don’t deserve my life or my children and that I

stole her baby from her. If this is true, then you need to put security measures in place at

your home. As in, security cameras at the doors and windows etc. And you cannot let your

kids out of your sight around your in-laws, ever.

It sounds like her husband at least is not, you know, crazy, so I think a conversation with

him would be a very good idea in which you discuss the measures you will be taking to

ensure that his batshit wife will have no chances to try to kidnap your baby.

You also need to make sure that daycares and schools know that your in-laws are not

allowed to pick up any of your children from them.

goddessofspite − Get a s__t ton of cameras covering every angle of the house. Install a

security alarm. Get stronger locks on the doors and windows. Tell any schools or daycare or

whatever that the p__cho sister is not allowed around your kids and get a restraining order

asap. This is clearly unhinged behavior

Zabes55 − Change the locks on your house. Baby cams in house. She’s nuts.

weirdlyworldly − Sane people don't have thoughts like that. You need to be careful with

this person. DO NOT bring ANY of your kids around her moving forward and make sure you

never leave any of your doors and windows unlocked. If she or her husband have a key, it is

time to change the locks.

A call to the police and a 5150 may need to be utilized, because she is clearly mentally

unstable and could be a danger to you and your children.

These commenters shared similar experiences with relatives displaying extreme baby obsession or inappropriate behavior toward children

2_old_for_this_spit − When i was a kid, a distant family member (A) suffered a miscarriage

about 3 months before her sister (B) announced her pregnancy. A insisted her baby moved

into B and she would reclaim her baby when B delivered. I remember a lot of talk about

"Crazy Cousin A," as if it were comedy material.

It took a kidnapping attempt to get the family to take it seriously. I'm glad your family sees

this for the serious problem it is. I hope your SIL gets therapy and that it works for her.

TurtleToast2 − Holy hell what a nutter! My crazy aunt made my poor uncle ask me for my

baby when I was 4 months pregnant and then she asked me herself after he was born. She

had her own kids but she's baby crazy.

She fostered medically fragile infants for a few years but she kept trying to adopt them all

so they stopped giving them to her.

These commenters recommended informing schools, daycare providers, and caregivers that SIL should not have contact with or pick up the children

RyoGeo − Provide a photo of your SIL to your children’s school with the instructions that

under no circumstances is she allowed to pick up/contact your kids from the premises.

George_Parr − So many mentions of schools, etc, but you better let the bus drivers know,

too. And hope there's never an ignorant substitute bus driver.

These commenters believed SIL’s behavior was connected to severe emotional distress, infertility grief

AffectionatePoet4586 − “Auntie is sad. Auntie wants a baby, but don’t worry, she isn’t

going to take ours. Auntie needs to see a talking doctor who can help her feel better. ” I’m

sorry to say I’ve been through this situation twice, once during my marriage of forty years

as well as in my brief starter marriage.

During the former, a SIL “joked” endlessly about “taking” one of my sons, which became

deeply unfunny in very little time. When at last she bore her own son, she left my three

alone. During the latter marriage, I had wisely chosen not to procreate—which became the

problem: In the eyes of my infertile SIL, my womb was just sitting there.

Why couldn’t I be inseminated by my BIL, via turkey baster? !? My own selfishness, my ILs

concluded, prevented me from gestating, giving birth to, and surrendering the newborn to

a deeply entitled couple whose religious, political, and social affiliations in no way reflected my own.

I got out of that family soon after several holiday meals had degenerated into shouting

and sobbing (sometimes both at once).

rayrayheyhey − I am in NO WAY defending your SIL, but this screams some sort of huge

mental health crisis. Finding out you cannot have children can be the worst news you can

hear, and then to experience you with your happy, full family. .. Look, what she asked was

horrible, but it seemed desperate and part of a much larger problem that she is going through.

I hope she can get help and that you and your family stay safe.

cookiemonster948 − Not sure if you will see this OP, but how long ago did she receive the

news that she is unable to have children naturally? While what she said is absolutely

shocking, I also read it as a woman who is going through the stages of grief and just had

one of her hopes and dreams taken away from her.

Like others mentioned please protect your children during this time and I sincerely hope

she finds peace. There are many children in need of foster care or adoption. I am also not

sure what her inability to conceive is related to but using a surrogate or surrogate egg with

her husband’s sperm might also be options.

_SwiftDeath − I’m sorry that happened OP, at the very least it seems the rest of that side of

the family (her husband, your mother in law) seem like reasonable people and saw her ask

for the insanity that it was.

As you insinuated, your sister in law is not right mentally, I do think her talking with a

therapist would probably be helpful, maybe one with some experience with infertility etc.

Not sure the chances of getting your SIL to go however.

I would honestly even be worried if your SIL and husband decided to adopt as it seems way

too important to her, she’s not thinking about children clearly.

What started as a painful family conflict quickly became something far more serious.

The OP’s sister-in-law, devastated by infertility, crossed a line when she demanded regular custody-like access to the baby and claimed the child was her “last chance” at motherhood.

After her behavior escalated, the family had to prioritize safety, boundaries, and professional help.

While many people can empathize with the grief of losing the chance to have biological children, does that pain ever justify making demands on someone else’s child?

Was the OP right to cut contact, or should there be room for reconciliation later? Share your thoughts below!
