Woman’s Neighbors Call Police on Her Over Gunshots, Then Their Own Report Backfires

Neighbor disputes can get ugly fast, especially when police reports, stolen property, and old grudges start mixing together. I think the situation becomes much more disturbing when someone appears willing to make a serious accusation just to get back at the person next door.

One 26-year-old Redditor said trouble with her neighbors escalated after she reported several hundred dollars’ worth of car supplies stolen from outside her apartment. Police later discovered that the neighbor’s boyfriend was allegedly violating a protective order, which led to another arrest and plenty of resentment.

After that, the OP says the couple began making her home life miserable with shouting and other petty behavior. Then one afternoon, she returned from picking up her daughter and found police waiting with a bizarre accusation involving gunshots. Scroll down to see why that call ended very differently from what her neighbors may have expected.

A family faces escalating retaliation after suspicious neighbors blame them for another police arrest

not the actual photo

'My neighbors called the cops on me and then got arrested for it'

Context: I, 26f, my husband 32m, and our daughter, 5f, live in an apartment complex on the ground floor.

We live in a mountain area so our breeze way is closed off on one side leaving us to share it with only one other neighbor.

A week ago I called the cops to file a report because I had $100-$200 worth of car supplies stolen from by my front door within a 3 hour period...

When they asked me who I suspected I did tell them my neighbors due to the fact

I had our cop neighbor check his cameras and no one was seen coming or going from our breezeway.

I also pointed out to the officer that they get the cops called and at least one of them will get arrested regularly.

Turns out there was a protective order put in place 2 weeks prior against the boyfriend when he got arrested.

The cops put 2 and 2 together and sent a patrol car to catch him there.

Needless to say it started a war. Small things here and there have been done such as screming at us,

blaring their security system every time I open my front door, nothing but small inconveniences.

Up until yesterday that is. I left to go pick my daughter up from school and was gone for about an hour to an hour and a half.

When I pulled into the apartments I noticed a patrol car parked near the entrance

and the boyfriend was there with his dogs talking to the cops and violently started pointing at my car.

I pulled up next to the officer and rolled down my window asking if I could help with anything. He instructed me to park near his partner.

His partner informed me that they had called the cops saying they heard gunshots through their security camera and gave my description.

Crazy thing is, I don't even own a gun. I told the officer this along with the fact I've been gone for the last hour and half.

He asked why I thought they would call and say such things and I told him I believed it was retaliation for last week.

He ended up being detained and his dogs were taken by animal control.

Now his girlfriend is going around to our neighbors saying I got him arrested and got their dogs taken away.

Funny thing is I don't remember calling the police yesterday but i guess i got him arrested guys🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😂

There was so much more before all this but I wanted to keep the post as direct and to the point as I could

Few things make home feel less secure than realizing a conflict with a neighbor may no longer be limited to insults or petty annoyances.

Once police reports, threats, and accusations enter the picture, ordinary routines can start carrying an uncomfortable question: What will they do next?* That kind of uncertainty is especially frightening when a young child is part of the household.

In this situation, the OP was not simply dealing with neighbors who disliked being reported. She described an escalating pattern after police discovered that the boyfriend was allegedly violating a protective order.

What followed included screaming, deliberate nuisance behavior, and eventually a report claiming gunshots had come from the OP’s home while she was away.

From her perspective, the frightening part was not merely being falsely accused. It was realizing that the neighbors may have been willing to involve law enforcement in their conflict and provide her description.

There is another perspective worth considering. The neighbors may genuinely believe the OP caused the boyfriend’s legal consequences because her original theft report brought police attention back to their apartment. Psychologically, blaming an outside person can be easier than confronting the decisions that produced those consequences.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline describes abusive dynamics as frequently involving attempts to maintain power and control, including intimidation and blame-shifting. That does not establish exactly what happened between these neighbors, but it offers a useful framework for understanding why accountability may be redirected toward someone else.

The more important psychological issue for the OP is what repeated retaliation can do to a person’s sense of safety. When seemingly minor incidents become increasingly targeted, people naturally begin watching doors, cars, cameras, and everyday movements more carefully.

The Stalking Prevention, Awareness & Resource Center defines stalking broadly around repeated behavior that would cause a reasonable person fear or substantial emotional distress, while emphasizing that legal definitions vary by jurisdiction.

That insight explains why treating each incident as an isolated annoyance may no longer be enough. SPARC recommends keeping records of concerning contacts and incidents, preserving police reports, and contacting authorities when immediate danger is feared.

Documentation does not require the OP to prove the neighbors’ motives; it simply creates a reliable chronology if the situation continues.

The practical goal now should be distance rather than victory. Keeping security footage, recording dates and police interactions, notifying apartment management in writing, and avoiding direct confrontation can protect the family without feeding the conflict. If threatening behavior escalates, professional safety planning may also be appropriate.

The irony of the story is that the OP did not personally arrest anyone. Consequences followed actions that were already attracting police attention. The safest mindset is therefore not, “How do I prove they are wrong?” but, “How do I make sure my family is protected if this pattern continues?”

Sometimes accountability feels like persecution to the person experiencing consequences, but that does not make the neighbor next door responsible for creating them.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters urged prioritizing safety by installing cameras and considering moving away from the dangerous neighbors

DAWO95 − That's not funny. It's going to get worse. You need cameras at the very least, and an exit strategy to boot.

amanda10271 − I would put security cameras inside your house in each room that uploads the video to the cloud.

He sounds unhinged and you may very well need the video footage if he attacks you or your family inside your home.

Any-Jump6306 − Move. It is not worth the risk nor the harassment.

These users mocked the neighbors for blaming others instead of accepting responsibility for their own actions.

ChrisInBliss − What "lovely" neighbors. How many of the other neighbors believe their story though?

Like if they get arrested so much everyone in the complex must know how they are?

tallMichdude − You have to love it when someone is such a loser that it's someone ELSES fault they are being held accountable for their actions.

What trashy neighbors

These Redditors criticized the neighbors for creating their own legal trouble through reckless behavior.

briomio − You have a small child - at this point, I would move

Ginger630 − He got his own ass arrested for lying to the cops.

Tipsy_Gamer − It is WILD to me the number of a__hole who think if they call the police, they won't get arrested for the shady s__t they're doing.

These commenters emphasized how serious false emergency reports can become and recommended documenting everything

SheriffHarryBawls − After this, maybe do acquire a personal protection item of some kind. Nunchucks or something

istoomycat − Citing gunshots, they were trying to SWAT you! ! That gets people killed! It could have gone so horribly.

Was the family right to stay and document everything, or would moving be the wiser choice with a young child involved? And if a neighbor falsely linked someone to gunfire, would that permanently end any possibility of peaceful coexistence?
