Planning your first big solo trip is supposed to be a dream come true. You save up every penny and circle the dates on your calendar with excitement. You imagine the food and the sights and the memories you will make along the way. But sometimes, life has a way of adding a few bumps to the road before you even reach the airport.

One traveler recently shared her story of a dream vacation that turned into an office nightmare. She had a trip planned with a brief stay in Hong Kong. While she was feeling cautious yet hopeful, her coworkers had a very different reaction. What started as a personal choice quickly became a heated office debate. It left her feeling excluded and wondering if her vacation plans were actually crossing a line.

Let’s look at how a simple layover turned into a test of office friendships and personal boundaries.

The Story

AITA for putting a pregnant woman in “danger” ?

First time posting on AITA, so sorry in advance for any mistakes! Some background: I (23F) am going on vacation to Hong Kong and.

Thailand in about two weeks time. I am only in Hong Kong for a layover there and back, however the first layover is 9.

Hours long so I was planning on leaving the airport and exploring for a bit. This is already paid for, and I cannot get.

A refund, and It’s the first nice trip I’ve paid for by myself since working & I’ve been extremely excited for it. Ive obviously.

Been keeping an eye on the corona virus and how its been spreading all around China & have ultimately decided that I am not.

In Hong Kong long enough for this to be impactful enough for me to cancel my trip, worst case I just don’t leave the.

Airport while in Hong Kong. One of my coworkers, however, thinks differently and thinks that I’m being selfish for not canceling my trip.

Because we have a girl in our office who is about three months pregnant. He has been making comments every day, he comes into.

The office and announces the new death toll every morning & asks if I’ve canceled yet, when I say I haven’t he gets mad.

He said he won’t allow me into the office when I return from vacation until he knows I am virus free. I told him.

Had no issue working from home for 2 weeks to prove I was asymptomatic; this just seemed to anger him more. He’s been telling.

Everyone that I’m selfish & am putting everyone at risk by going on vacation, even my pregnant coworker is mad now & invited everyone.

In the office (about 17 people) to a dinner party and excluded me.. So reddit AITA for going on this trip & potentially putting.

People at risk ? It should be noted that this coworker is a manager, but he is not my manager, my manager has no.

Issue with me going on the trip. EDIT/ UPDATE: wow this blew up way more than I expected ! Firstly thank you everyone for.

Voting, even those who put YTA or ESH, everyone’s advice about the situation was extremely welcomed as that is what I was looking.

For ! To give an update and answer a few questions I’m flying on Cathaway Pacific, I won’t mention out of which airport but.

I will say it’s in the US .If you search their restrictions right now you’ll see that they are only offering refunds to mainland.

China, not Hong Kong, so unfortunately I can’t get refunded, even if I wanted to cancel at this point I couldn’t without paying.

In full. Those who assumed HR is nonexistent in a smaller office are correct, we do have HR that sits remotely & I have.

Reached out to them, who have ensured they will take care of it & my manager promised she would speak to my coworker as.

Well. I have decided NOT to leave the airport whilst in Hong Kong, this seemed to settle my pregnant coworkers concerns, if only slightly.

I am bringing masks, hand sanitizer, and antibacterial wipes (for the plane seats) and anything else that will help prevent the spread of germs.

I’m definitely keeping a close eye on if anything changes before I leave, then maybe I’ll reconsider but for the mean time I’m.

Going & I’m exited to be going ! Thanks everyone for all the responses I’ll be sure to update what happens to my AH.

Coworker with HR & what it was like in Thailand when I’m back ! I also will be working from home for 2 weeks.

When I get back, got it OK’d from my manager and am all set to lock myself in my house for all 14 days! Stocking.

Up on Mac n Cheese and canned soup before I go!

Oh goodness, this situation sounds like a very difficult balance to find. It is always tough when your personal happiness feels like it is at odds with the comfort of your friends or colleagues. My heart really goes out to this young woman. She worked so hard to pay for this milestone by herself.

It is also easy to see why her colleagues were feeling a bit on edge. However, there is a big difference between having a quiet worry and making a grand announcement every single morning. Being excluded from a dinner party after offering a safe work-from-home plan feels especially painful. It’s a lot to navigate when you just want to see a bit of the world.

Expert Opinion

When a group of people experiences a collective worry, it can lead to something called “mass anxiety.” This happens when one person’s fear starts to spread to others like a wildfire. In a workplace, this often looks like one person taking on the role of the protector. Even if their intentions are good, their methods can sometimes feel like harassment.

According to research from the American Psychological Association, high levels of stress in the workplace can cloud our judgment. People might stop looking at facts and start acting out of pure emotion. A study on office dynamics suggests that “social exclusion” is a common way for a group to punish someone they view as a threat to their shared safety.

In a professional setting, there are usually very clear rules about travel and health. Experts at Psych Central often point out that when an employee has approval from their actual manager, others should ideally respect that. Taking it upon oneself to announce daily risks can create a “hostile work environment.” This is something HR departments try very hard to prevent.

Dr. Susan Newman, a social psychologist, often discusses the importance of setting boundaries with intrusive people. She notes that we are responsible for our own choices, especially when we follow all the recommended safety guidelines. Offering a two-week self-quarantine is a very thoughtful and generous way to bridge that gap between adventure and office safety.

It is a gentle reminder that we can’t always control how others feel. We can only control our own responses and the kindness we offer in return. This story highlights a common struggle: trying to be a global citizen while also being a respectful part of a small, local community.

Community Opinions

Friends on the internet had some very strong opinions about how this was handled. Most felt that the coworker’s behavior was crossing a professional line.

Colleagues suggest taking the matter to HR because the coworker is acting unprofessionally.

[Reddit User] − NTA. Take this to HR. He's harassing you. He's making the environment hostile for you... This is not normal behavior,

especially in an office setting. maybe he's a germaphobe, but he might also be jealous that you're getting to go on a vacation.

CalLil6 − NTA - your coworker is a moron who needs to mind his damn business

Readers believe that offering to work from home makes the traveler’s stance very reasonable.

graywisteria − I told him had no issue working from home for 2 weeks to prove I was asymptomatic; this just seemed to anger him more.

NTA then. Your coworker seems more interested in making a scene than anything.

IBlameMyPlayers − You're 100% ready to work from home and do anything in your power not to put others in danger. Imo, they are overreacting. NTA.

People point out that the coworker is using fear to get attention in the office.

tritops2018 − NTA... It's a media fear mongering session. I'll die on this hill, I am sure.

ChaoticMidget − You know what's killed more people than the coronavirus? The flu...

Ask if everyone in the entire office has gotten the flu shot to protect the immunocompromised pregnant woman.

Commenters suggest that a layover in an airport is a low risk for the situation.

NachosSiempre − NTA. You will only be in the HK airport and the Coronavirus is primarily on the mainland.

That’s like saying you can’t go to Miami because there is an outbreak in Minnesota.

SteamScout − NTA - It's a layover for crying out loud. I do think it's a good idea to stay in the airport as an added precaution...

even the common stomach flu is dangerous for pregnant women.

Friends warned her that the trip might face challenges outside of the office drama.

stienbabe − NAH, but I think it's highly unlikely that your trip will be going ahead as planned...

if you do travel you run a very real risk of being stranded in Thailand during a global epidemic.

Weirdbirdnerd − Hope you get this, but I wouldn't go on the trip because you likely won't be able to come back...

since the travel bans are getting worse by the hour, you won't know for sure if you can return until the day of your flight home.

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

If you ever find yourself at the center of an office controversy, the best thing to do is to stay calm. Keeping a steady heart will help you communicate more effectively. It is always a good idea to speak with your manager and HR early on. Having a professional plan in place, like working from home, can show everyone that you are taking their concerns seriously.

Try to remember that people usually act out of fear rather than a desire to be unkind. You can acknowledge their feelings without giving up your own rights. Saying, “I understand you are worried, and that is why I have planned a full quarantine when I return,” can be very helpful. It bridges the gap between your freedom and their peace of mind.

Conclusion

In the end, this story is about how we interact during times of uncertainty. While the office became a place of tension, the traveler remained firm in her plans while also being flexible with her return. It is a tricky situation with no easy answers, but leading with a plan and a kind word is always a good start.

How would you feel if a coworker planned a trip to an area with a health scare? Would you feel safe if they quarantined for two weeks after they came back? We would love to hear your thoughts on how to keep the peace at work when things get a little stormy.
