While the chance of us encountering real doppelgängers is one in a trillion, we still find out many celebrities who actually look just like other stars in Hollywood. This has led to some funny stories that celebrities revealed later in interviews.
So what precisely does a celebrity do when they are mistakenly identified? Sometimes, they just go along with fans and don’t correct it. Other times, their honesty turns the would-be-exciting star sighting into an awkward disappointment. Here are 20 celebrities who have been mistaken for other celebs and their striking similarity has sent fans into a tizzy.
Scroll down to see who they are and what they look like! Good luck telling these doppelgängers apart!
#1 Zooey Deschanel & Katy Perry

Zooey revealed in a 2009 MTV interview that she is regularly confused with Katy, and at the time she wasn’t a fan of it. She also admitted that it was “a little bit annoying,” mostly since they were so similar to one another aside from their appearances.
“I used to get, ‘I heard you were out at such-and-such club drinking whiskey!’ I was at home watching TV,” Zooey told the site at the time. “I think we lead very different lives. At some point I feel like this will stop being a thing. I like the way my life goes. It’s sort of strange to be associated with someone that’s doing such different stuff than me. It’s weird.”
#2 Daniel Radcliffe & Elijah Wood

Elijah stated on Conan in 2016 that the more famous each of them became, the worse it got. He claimed that people regularly mistake him for Daniel, the actor well-known for Harry Potter.
“People started to mistake me for Daniel, and apparently, they’d mistake him for me,” Elijah said. “After a while, you’d think it hits the Internet and people talk about it for a while, and you think, ‘OK, we get it, the joke is over and it’ll die,’ but it has long legs. It keeps going.”
#3 Rupert Grint & Ed Sheeran
Source: Splash News; Splash News
Despite the fact that Ed is a singer and Rupert is an actor, this situation of mistaken identification has continued. On The Late Late Show in 2017, Rupert said that he frequently gets mistaken for Ed.
“When someone stops me, it could go either way. I could be Ed or I could be me,” he said. “The singer Leo Sayer came up to me and said he loved my music, of course thinking I was Ed. I just played along.”
#4 Darren Criss & Kit Harington
Source: Splash News; Splash News
In order to recall the situation, Darren posted a photo on Instagram in 2016 with someone who believed themselves to be Kit. He noted:
“Hey… Are you Kit Harington?
Me: aw sorry man I’m not
“Aw cuz if you were I’d kick myself if I didn’t ask for a picture.”
[he goes, disappointed]
Me: wait, can I get a picture though? To commemorate this moment?”
We hope we could have been there to see it happen. At least Darren handled the situation with good humor!

In 2013, Mark posted a screenshot of a text exchange between two people who had mistakenly believed they had met Matt Damon but had actually encountered him. When she spotted Mark, the delighted fan yelled, “Matt Damon!” and even got into a photo with him.And to Mark’s credit, he just played along.

John Stamos posted a video of a fan on Instagram who claimed to be Rob and wanted a selfie with him when he was away on vacation. John asks, “What’s my name?” in the video. “Rob,” the fan responds. He then asks, “Rob what?” “Rob Lowe,” says the fan.
An amusing yet embarrassing moment ensued, but at least John was a good sport about it and assured her that she was correct before continuing to take the picture.
#7 Sarah Hyland & Mila Kunis

A picture of Mila Kunis was previously identified as Sarah Hyland in a Teen Vogue article. Evidently, this wasn’t their first time being mistaken. They made an agreement back in 2010 that if any of them is mistaken for the other, they will just go through with it.
#8 Daisy Ridley & Keira Knightley
Source: Splash News; Splash News
Before Daisy’s performance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens gave her a household name, the actress acknowledged that Daisy Ridley is sometimes mistaken for Keira Knightley in an interview with The Daily Mail in 2015. And, no insult to Keira, it occasionally frustrates her.
People have always said that I look like Keira Knightley. But it is actually really frustrating,” she said. “Keira Knightley is wonderful and has her own thing. I just think to compare a 23-year-old girl to anyone else is so unnecessary. I just think every single person in the world has their own thing going on. And I just want to be me.”
#9 Chris Pratt & Chris Evans
Source: Splash News; Splash News
We understand why a fan believed Chris Pratt to be Chris Evans in a Billy on the Street episode. There are several Chrises who appear in the Avengers film series alone, including Chris Pratt, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth.
Actually, we’d be thrilled to meet any of these men or, for that matter, any Chris in Hollywood.
#10 Amy Adams & Isla Fisher
Source: Splash News; Splash News
Isla said that Lady Gaga once mistook her for Amy when they met at an Oscars after-party when she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2017. Isla merely went through with it because, after all, it was Lady Gaga who contacted her to compliment her on her role in American Hustle. She stated:
“I just gracefully thanked her, bowed my head, OK? And then she wants to talk about the performance, and now I’m thinking, ‘I don’t want to be a liar’… And then I look over her shoulder and there’s Amy Adams walking into the party. So I’m like, ‘There’s Isla Fisher.’ I said, ‘She’s not even nominated for anything. What’s she doing here?’”
#11 Minka Kelly & Leighton Meester

Leighton and Minka’s similar appearances really inspired them to work on The Roommate, a film about a college student who develops an unhealthy obsession with her roommate. In an interview with CBS News, Minka remarked that doing the movie together was a “no brainer.
#12 Lucy Hale & Selena Gomez

One of them was a Pretty Little Liars actor, and the other is now more well-known for her music. One admirer, however, continued to believe that Lucy was Selena despite everything.
Someone was seriously convinced I was Selena Gomez today and tried to take my phone because they wanted to call Justin Bieber,” Lucy tweeted in 2011. “Ohh life.”
#13 Ed Sheeran & Prince Harry
Source: Splash News; Splash News
People mistakenly believe that Prince Harry and Ed Sheeran are the same person in addition to Rupert Grint. When she first met Prince Harry, Margot Robbie said on a Jimmy Fallon episode of The Tonight Show that she mistook him for Ed.
“I didn’t know it was a prince, it’s not like he was wearing a crown,” she admitted. “When I saw him in those glasses, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I didn’t know Ed Sheeran was at the party!’ He got really offended. He was like, ‘Shut up!'”
#14 Elizabeth Banks & Chelsea Handler
Source: Splash News; Splash News
They are both humorous and blond, yet they are actually two separate persons. But occasionally, as Elizabeth acknowledged to Fox News in 2012, people confuse them.
And in her opinion, that’s not always a terrible thing.
“I don’t mind being compared to Chelsea Handler at all,” she said. “It helps me when someone says, ‘oh, you’re Chelsea Handler’ and I say ‘yes I am.’ That gives me one more gain of anonymity. We met at a party and we were both aware people compared or confused us. She’s a great broad, a real wit.”
#15 Kim Kardashian & Eva Longoria
Source: Splash News; Splash News
Bret Michaels tweeted to wish Eva a happy birthday, but the image he sent was of him and Kim, as E! News pointed out back in 2013. (Whoops!) He created a fresh tweet specifically for Eva after deleting the first one.
#16 Theo James & James Franco
Source: Splash News; Splash News
The paparazzi are to blame this time. Theo James revealed to Hollywood.com that he was once followed by a photographer just because they mistook him for James Franco.
… and it brought up a somewhat embarrassing situation.
“It was fun to be human and to wave and be like, ‘What’s up, man?’ but he was like ‘Where are you going?’ And I said, ‘Um, we’re going for some food, why are you filming me?'” Theo said. “And he stopped and you could see he was like ‘Oh sh-t.’ He thought I was f*cking James Franco. Maybe it’s because I changed my haircut and started doing press-ups.”
#17 Zac Efron & Kevin Zegers
Source: Splash News; Splash News
It’s difficult to imagine Zac being confused for anybody else, but Kevin Zegers and he reportedly experience this. In fact, Kevin shared a snapshot of their combined faces on Instagram in February and labeled it as “unsettling.”
“This is both complimentary and completely unsettling,” he wrote. “@Zacefron, I think it’s time we bust out the Siamese Twins screenplay we’ve been working on.”
#18 Chris Rock & Kevin Hart
Source: Splash News; Splash News
Like John Stamos, Kevin Hart also posted a video of a fan who mistook him for Chris Rock on Instagram. He asks the fan in the video who he is, and she responds, “Chris Rock.” Of course, he acknowledges that she is accurate and informs her that she must see his performance that evening.
#19 Brittany Murphy & Lili Reinhart

This one has a creepy conspiracy idea attached to it. Some others, according to Lili’s comments to BuzzFeed, believe she is Brittany reincarnated.
Everyone says Brittany Murphy — everyone,” the Riverdale star said. “They think I’m her reincarnated. There are a lot of pictures of us side by side where we look crazy alike. If you just google Lili Reinhart and Brittany Murphy, you’ll see it.”
#20 Henry Cavill & Matt Bomer
Source: Splash News; Brett D. Cove/Splash News
He was initially supposed to portray Superman in Man of Steel, but Henry ended up getting the role, as Matt Bomer revealed on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. They are both candidates for the same position because of how similar they appear to be. Additionally, it seems like Matt has no hard feelings toward Henry for getting the role.
