Man Told His Cousin To Lower His Dating Standards After Fame Changed His Expectations

Spending time around famous people can open doors that would normally remain closed. Parties become more exclusive, attention arrives more easily, and even dating can feel completely different. However, once that glamorous connection disappears, adjusting to everyday life may be harder than expected.

The original poster (OP) watched his cousin spend three years traveling with a successful musician and enjoying attention from attractive fans and models.

After leaving the entourage to build his own career, the cousin continued expecting the same dating experience, rejecting interested women while repeatedly pursuing others who showed no interest.

OP finally suggested that his cousin reconsider his standards and explained why fame may have influenced his earlier success. The conversation quickly turned into an argument, leaving OP wondering whether honesty was necessary or unnecessarily cruel. Read on to see how Reddit judged his blunt reality check.

'AITAH for telling my cousin that he needs to lower his standards?'

I feel like this is a silly post, but I would like some clarity.

So I (24M) have always been pretty close with my cousin (24M). Due to us being the same age, we were more like brothers.

He’s an average looking guy. Not bad looking at all, but not model by any means (you’ll see why this comes into play).

About three years ago, one of his best friends from his school kind of blew up as a musician.

He’s not a huge mainstream artist who sells out arenas, but he has his own fan base that allows him to tour all over the US and sell out amphitheaters.

His fan base also has a lot of women, and a lot of them are very good looking.

He also is in the fashion space, so he goes to events and parties that are also attended by models.

I say all of this because my cousin, being one of his best friends, was on his entourage for those three years.

During this time, my cousin was able to live like a rockstar along with his friend, which meant lots of casual flings with attractive fans, and even sometimes models.

He even once invited me out to a show he was doing in Miami, and afterwards we went to a party

and I was able to witness firsthand how being in the entourage of a popular musician helped him reap benefits.

Fast-forward to March. He decided that he was going to leave the entourage life because he needed to start his own life.

He had no desire to be in the celebrity world and realized that he needed to gain work experience and start a career.

He did online schooling and got his degree while on the road with his friend. Of course me and him took back up like he never left. This leads to...

Since he’s been back, we’ve been to parties, clubs, concerts, etc. At these events, there would be women who found him attractive and tried to talk to him.

These women were “average good looking”, meaning they were your every day good looking woman,

not some model or very beautiful looking woman that you would see be all over a musician and his team.

He would reject these women politely.

Of course me and the others around would be like “dude why didn’t you go for her?” and he would respond that she wasn’t good looking enough.

Then he would set his eyes on the hottest woman at the event. He’d tried to talk to her and get rejected.

This would happen multiple times over the next few months, and he always seemed shocked.

This past weekend, I was with him and he told me he decided to make Tinder and Hinge profiles.

He even showed me his profile and started showing me the women that liked him (he paid for the feature that allows him to see who liked him even if...

He was disappointed because he didn’t think that the women were hot enough, and that the 10/10 women that he did like never liked him back.

It was at this point that I decided that enough was enough and had to tell him the truth.

I told him that he needed to lower his standards.

He looked confused, and I told him that the reason he got to sleep with those models

and very attractive women were because he was on the entourage of a popular musician.

That many of those women were okay with sleeping with someone on his team if they couldn’t get to him.

I told him nothing was wrong with that, it was fun for you both, but that now he’s back home and he’s not riding the coattails of a popular artist,

he most likely was not going to get the same caliber of women that he did when he was on the entourage.

This led to an argument and he ended up going home and hasn’t spoken to me since. I’ve texted him and called him, but he’s ignoring me.

Part of me thinks I’m right, but another part feels that maybe I was too harsh. I don’t know. AITAH?

Sometimes people mistake access for attraction, especially when a glamorous environment temporarily changes how others respond to them. The cousin’s difficulty is not simply that he prefers conventionally beautiful women.

He spent three years inside a social world where status, celebrity proximity, fashion, and nightlife created opportunities that ordinary dating rarely provides. Returning home meant losing that context, but his expectations remained shaped by it.

The emotional tension comes from a mismatch between his former lifestyle and his current reality. While traveling with a successful musician, the cousin received attention from fans and models partly because he belonged to an exciting entourage.

That experience may have strengthened his confidence, but it also appears to have changed his understanding of his own dating options.

Now, women who show genuine interest are dismissed because they do not resemble the exceptional people he met backstage. Meanwhile, the women he pursues may not see the status signals that once made him more noticeable.

A fresher perspective is that the cousin does not necessarily need to “lower” his standards. He may need to separate standards from status-conditioned preferences. Wanting attraction, compatibility, and shared values is reasonable.

Expecting every potential partner to match the most visually striking women from an unusual three-year period may be less about authentic desire and more about maintaining an identity.

Accepting an ordinary dating life could feel, to him, like admitting that his rockstar chapter was borrowed rather than earned. That emotional loss may explain why the cousin reacted defensively.

Research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people’s stated preferences can predict attraction and partner choices, while physical appearance and social status influence desirability differently across dating contexts.

The researchers also showed that attraction involves more than a fixed ranking of beauty; people respond to combinations of qualities and to the social setting in which someone is encountered.

Another study found that people who perceive themselves as having high “mate value” tend to become more selective, suggesting that self-perception can shape whom they consider acceptable.

Applied here, the cousin’s years beside a musician may have inflated his perceived dating value without permanently changing how strangers evaluate him outside that environment.

His cousin’s observation was probably accurate, but saying he had been “riding coattails” likely turned useful feedback into humiliation. It attacked his pride rather than helping him examine the pattern.

A better approach would be to let consequences teach the lesson. He is free to pursue only the women he finds exceptionally attractive, but he must accept repeated rejection without insulting women who do like him.

The real adjustment is not choosing someone he finds undesirable. It is learning that attraction can grow through personality, familiarity, and connection rather than treating dating like access to a celebrity lounge.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These Redditors criticized his fixation on women’s looks as shallow and misogynistic

prolifezombabe − NTA  And if your cousin doesn’t learn to appreciate something about women other than

how they look he’s going to end up miserable whether or not he gets with a 10.

alloyed39 − So he gets with a 10, and then what? Women's bodies and looks change a lot with stress, age, babies, and hormones.

She *might* stay model-pretty for a decade or two (if lucky), but not forever.

And neither will he. If he's expecting something different, he's going to end up very unhappy. NTA

spongebobsworsthole − NTA, and his overemphasis on valuing women’s appearances is giving misogyny.

These commenters said the models liked his celebrity connection, not merely his personality

Hamachiman − NTA. When I was in my early 20’s I was the chairman of a rising company and found women gravitated to me.

Then the company went belly up, and women were a lot less interested.

Later in life I made a bunch of money and they got very interested again. Certainly our looks, personality, etc.

are important but if your cousin thinks those models were into him just because of who he is (and not his proximity to a star) then he’s delusional.

BeautifulChaosEnergy − NTA someone needed to give this dude a reality check.

Like seriously, what colour is the sky in the world he lives in?

He’s dululu I’m also concerned that he didn’t know on his own those women were only interested in him because of his proximity to a celebrity

ETA all you to do is look at Mick Jagger.

Even as a young man he was not attractive looking. Yet women still threw themselves at him. And they still do

These users agreed he needed a reality check and should reconsider his priorities

Objective-Pound2185 − NTA but it sounds like he is doing the women of the world a favor here.

They are dodging a bullet and he is saving them the time of figuring out that he is shallow and judgmental and it sounds like pretty self centred.

Maybe just leave him to it. No woman needs to have to deal with his nonsense.

Mephistocheles − NTA. You're being a good friend by being honest with him about the scenario.

He's going to have to realign with the local reality or he's just gonna end up totally single forever.

When you guys do get a chance to talk, I'd recommend being really clear with him

that you didn't mean it in a negative way, you just love him and don't want to see him unhappy.

_unrealist_ − I think it would be better to reframe ‘lower your standards’ as ‘rethink your priorities’.

DatguyMalcolm − He will be a prime target for manosphere guys, sadly

This commenter found the entire situation uncomfortable and unpleasant

WillingHome9072 − This whole post is icky.

Should the poster apologize for his wording while standing by the underlying advice? Is the cousin’s problem unrealistic expectations, or simply a preference he must accept may leave him single?
