He Warned His Neighbor’s Son to Stop Climbing the Fence, Then the Boy Got Hurt

in Social Issues

Privacy can become a serious source of conflict when neighbors have very different ideas about boundaries.

What seems like harmless behavior to one family may feel invasive and exhausting to the person dealing with it every day.

The original poster (OP) says a neighbor’s young son repeatedly climbs onto his fence, peers into his garden, and tries to get his attention despite being told to stop.

After speaking to both the child and his mother several times without seeing any change, OP decided to make the fence harder to climb.

His neighbor called the solution extreme, but OP argued that her son had already received more than enough warnings.

When the child ignored those warnings again, the situation became even more controversial.

Read on to find out why OP is now asking whether protecting his privacy went too far.

Homeowner fed up with a neighbor’s child repeatedly climbing their fence takes extreme measures to protect their privacy

He Warned His Neighbor’s Son to Stop Climbing the Fence, Then the Boy Got Hurt
not the actual photo

'AITAH for putting a some barbed wire type stuff along the top of my fence?'

(I own the fence to the left, so my neighbour can't take it down because it's

not her fence btw)

My neighbours young lad, who i'd say is about 10 years old is a pain in the

ass. He constantly climbs on my fence and looks into my garden all the

time, I spend a lot of time in my garden and I don't like it. He'll make a

stupid noise then duck. Trying to get my attention. His behaviour is even

worse when he's with his little friend's. There's a number of other things

that really annoy me about his behaviour too, and I've asked his mum to tell

him to stop bothering me, but he carries on. I've told him to go away too,

again, he carries on. I'm just sick of it.

The other day I was up on a ladder putting this sharp, spikey stuff all along

the top of my fence, my neighbour came out and asked what I was doing,

so I told her. She said it was a little extreme, to which I responded "Tell your

son not to climb up because he'll hurt himself" I also told her I like my

privacy, and that I was sick to death of her son being a little fool and

breaking my boundaries. That was that.

I have said to stop enough times to a point where YES, I guess I'm taking

extreme measures now. He ended up trying anyway, and hurt himself..

Maybe now he'll stop. I really don't care if he's just a kid Its annoying, it

disturbs me and it makes me uncomfortable.. AITAH?

Everyone deserves privacy in their own garden.

A child repeatedly climbing onto someone else’s fence, peering over it, making noises, and returning after being told to stop would irritate most homeowners.

The boy’s mother should have taken the complaints seriously and prevented the behavior before the conflict escalated.

But OP’s frustration does not justify installing something sharp with the expectation that a ten-year-old might encounter it.

The distinction between a deterrent and a trap matters.

A taller privacy screen, smooth anti-climb topping, trellis, motion-activated sprinkler, camera, or formal written complaint would aim to stop access without injuring anyone.

Sharp spikes create a foreseeable risk, particularly because OP already knew exactly who was climbing the fence and had warned the mother that the child would be hurt if he tried again.

When the predictable injury occurred, responding with “maybe now he’ll stop” makes the decision sound less like property protection and more like punishment.

The child is not blameless. At ten, he is old enough to understand repeated instructions to stay off another person’s property.

His behavior was intrusive, disrespectful, and potentially damaging to a fence OP owns.

His mother also bears responsibility for failing to supervise him or impose meaningful consequences after receiving several complaints.

Yet children are impulsive and often test boundaries even when adults have explained the danger.

Safety guidance from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents emphasizes designing fences around children so they do not introduce additional hazards, while also recognizing that children can be capable climbers.

Knowing that a child will probably disobey again creates a stronger reason to choose a non-injurious solution, not permission to make the consequences sharper.

There may also be legal concerns depending on the country, the height and design of the fence, the type of spikes, and whether warnings were displayed.

Ownership does not necessarily remove every duty to consider foreseeable injury.

Because the location is unclear, OP should obtain local advice rather than assuming that “my fence” automatically ends the matter.

The healthiest next step is to remove or replace anything capable of causing significant injury and document the continuing behavior.

OP can send the mother a calm written notice stating that the boy must not climb, lean on, damage, or look over the fence.

Cameras facing only OP’s property could establish what is happening, while a suitable privacy extension could remove the reward of seeing into the garden.

Persistent trespassing or harassment can then be addressed through the appropriate landlord, neighborhood authority, council, or local police channel.

OP was right to demand privacy and wrong to enforce it through a foreseeable injury.

The mother failed to control her child, but adults do not get to answer childish harassment by turning a shared boundary into a physical hazard.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters argued that a ten-year-old is old enough

EatADangQuesadilla − Nope, NTA. the AH is the 10 year old who is old

enough to FAFO.

Curiouser-Quriouser − NOPE. Good for you! She's raising a little hellion who

fucked around and found out. I like kids in general but can't stand the ones

who act like monsters and get away with it because they're "just a kid".

F__k that kid. And his mom.

These commenters emphasized that OP had already tried polite warnings several times

floridaeng − Tell her you tried the polite way many times before you

decided this way may get the results you want.

HoMe4WaYWaRDKiTTieS − If my son was doing this to my neighbor I would

be MORTIFIED. I would also have no problem with you doing this. I'm sorry

you had to go to this length to get your privacy. NTA.

These commenters placed responsibility on the mother for failing to supervise or discipline her son

spicyandstrange − Nta. She's obviously not watching her son at all. I have

friends that refuse to watch their kids and let them get into all sorts of s__t

and now no one wants them over at their house anymore.

glimmerseeker − Nope, NTA. It’s your fence so who cares what your

neighbor thinks? Her brat has no business harassing you from the top of

YOUR fence. The sharp spiky stuff is no issue for anyone who doesn’t climb your fence.

These commenters supported OP’s frustration

sara_likes_snakes − NTA. Just be careful, depending on where you are, they

can sue you of the kid gets hurt. It's stupid but it's true unfortunately.

SilentRaindrops − NTA but check with building codes in your area. It may be

banned in residential areas. In one city where I lived I wanted to put

decorative points on my iron fence posts. I was told that because someone,

even a criminal trespasser could get impaled, they were illegal.

These commenters suggested even stronger or alternative deterrents

Lopsided-Beach-1831 − Remember- this fence treatment is to keep

predatory animals off of the fence- birds, bobcats, raccoons, opossums,

etc, NOT the child, officer. What kind of evil criminal mastermind, I mean

loving, caring neighbor do you think I am?

Shinikami9 − NTA , if they kick off maybe invest in some speakers and play

the mosquito song! That'll get rid of the kid

When personal boundaries are repeatedly ignored, even small conflicts can turn into major neighborhood disputes.

The OP felt their privacy was being invaded after repeated attempts to stop a child from climbing the fence, while others may question whether installing sharp deterrents was an appropriate response.

Many people can understand wanting peace in their own backyard, but the situation also raises concerns about safety and responsibility.

Do you think the OP was justified after trying other solutions, or did they take things too far?

How would you handle a neighbor’s child repeatedly crossing boundaries? Share your thoughts below!
