Bride’s Future Mother-In-Law Tried to Fire Wedding Officiant, Not Knowing She Was the Owner

by Annie Nguyen
August 15, 2026
in Social Issues

Weddings have a strange way of revealing family tensions that were easier to ignore before an engagement. I think the real trouble starts when someone stops offering opinions and begins quietly interfering with plans that do not belong to them.

One bride-to-be discovered that her future mother-in-law had taken that interference much further than expected.

After learning who would officiate the wedding, the woman reportedly contacted the officiant directly and tried to convince her to drop the couple as clients. She even wanted the name of the business owner so she could warn them about the bride.

There was just one spectacular problem with that plan: the bride herself owns the company employing the officiant. What followed involved a laughing phone call, an angry fiancé, and a wedding invitation suddenly hanging by a thread. Scroll down to see how this family drama unfolded.

UPDATE: I want to first apologize for the lack of paragraphs and punctuation.

I am recovering from surgery and the meds i was given to alleviate pain fog my brain sometimes.

Now. To what you all are waiting for. The update.

My fiancé was asleep when I got the call as he is a government worker and has to be at work super early and I did not wake up with...

I had to wait for him to come home. I told him about the call with jenna.

As pointed out he is still pretty far in the fog but I do believe the conversation he had with her may have opened his eyes.

I will summarize as best as I can because it was a lot.

Fiance: Mom, tell me what i just heard is a lie on behalf of our officiant.

STBMIL: What are you talking about?

F: Did you call *me* sinful, rude, and disrespectful

STBMIL: it's no secret son that all she does is manipulate you against me. We were so close until you got with her

F: Let me make this perfectly clear, she is the best thing in my life. She makes me happy.

She showed me love like i have never known before and you tried to destroy that. Make no mistake YOU are the one manipulating.

At this point it is best for both my mental health and *mine* that you are not invited anymore.

STBMIL: SEE!!!!! I KNEW IT!!!! I KNEW SHE DIDN'T WANT ME THERE AND YOU'RE WHAT? JUST GOING TO TAKE HER SIDE?!!!

F: you weren't supposed to know this but you were invited even after everything you put her through

because she knows how important you are to me and she was willing to put up with you for me. Until you can apologize..... we are done

STBMIL screaming: HOW'D YOU EVEN FIND OUT? DOESN'T THAT GO AGAINST SOME KIND OF PRIVELEGE

THAT SHE *Jenna* CAN'T TELL YOU IF I SAY SOMETHING. I'M GOING TO SUE

F getting exasperated: No mom, that's not how that works WE are the clients.

We will only reconsider your invite if you apologize and mean it. Love you mom. Have the day you deserve.

He has been quiet since they hung up and I have no idea how to help him.

Death to "The Wicked B__ch Of The Midwest" for now.. I know this update wasn't too exciting but she's crazy enough I may be back. Stay tuned.

I posted a month ago about my best friend having to bring her girlfriend everything we hang out where I dropped the news that I am engaged.

I did not think I would have to post again and especially not this soon but here I am.

I am the owner of a small business started by a very close family member of mine who is no longer with us and I was tasked with taking it...

We employ five officiants including myself. The reason we have so many is

1.) Our couples have different belief systems and we match the couple with the officiant we think is most suited to their needs and

2.) I have a lot of health problems currently and they sometimes pick up the slack where I can't. For the purposes of this story we will call my officiant...

Jenna is kind, caring, funny, and compassionate. This is important because people think she is eay to manipulate when in fact she is our most valuable asset.

The business is named after this family member and I however it uses nicknames those

who do not know us wouldn't automatically be able to put two and two together on who owns it.

I like it that way because then I can't be accused of playing favorites when someone

who hurt me asks for services I can usually place them with someone else and they are none the wiser.

So anyway, my STBMIL found out we were engaged. When She asked about our plans I told her there were only four things we had set in stone

the first being my dress was designed by one of my children and I found someone to make it bespoke for me.

The second, my venue while not set in stone will be in the City/State i grew up in (not where we currently live)

the third thing is that we are doing a Halloween wedding (this is a saga all on it's own) and the fourth our officiant is a friend

and we are paying her what we believe she is worth. When she asked who our officiant was I told her that it was Jenna.

STBMIL knows Jenna as she is best friend with STBSIL (who is no contact with STBMIL so is safe with wedding info) and knows she does weddings on the side.

STMIL just doesn't know who she is employed through as in this line of work it is generally seasonal.

So, last night I get a call from Jenna and she is laughing hysterically.

I ask her what's up and when she finally calms down she tells me that STBMIL

called her directly and told her to drop us as clients because i am rude, disrespectful, sinful, and don't deserve her son.

She demanded to know who she (Jenna) works for because she wants to contact the owner and give them a heads up to try to prevent them from getting scammed.

Jenna did not give her any information but asked if it would be petty of her to tell STBMIL that I her hated FDIL

am the owner of a 5 figure a year business that she just tried to get me exiled from. What do you guys think?

Major life events often reveal the true dynamics within families. Weddings, in particular, are not only celebrations of love but also moments where expectations, traditions, and personal boundaries collide.

When someone attempts to control those decisions, the conflict is rarely just about one detail. It is usually about respect, acceptance, and whether the couple is allowed to create a life on their own terms.

In this situation, the OP was not simply dealing with a disagreement over an officiant. The deeper issue was that her future mother-in-law attempted to interfere with a decision that belonged to the couple.

The officiant was someone they trusted, someone connected to their values, and someone they had intentionally chosen.

By contacting the officiant and trying to remove herself from their wedding plans, the mother-in-law crossed from expressing an opinion into attempting to control the situation.

The emotional dynamic is complicated because the conflict involves a parent struggling with a child’s independence. The fiancé’s mother appeared to interpret the relationship as a loss of influence rather than a normal transition into adulthood.

Instead of seeing her son’s partner as someone who brings him happiness, she seemed to view the partner as an obstacle between them. This can create a painful situation where the couple feels forced to defend their relationship instead of simply enjoying it.

A different perspective is that the mother-in-law may genuinely believe she is protecting her son. Some parents convince themselves that criticism or interference comes from love and concern. However, good intentions do not erase harmful actions.

Attempting to damage a couple’s wedding plans, question their character, or privately undermine their choices crosses a boundary because it removes their ability to make decisions for themselves.

Family psychologists often explain that healthy adult relationships require parents to adjust their role as their children create independent families.

Psychologist Murray Bowen, who developed family systems theory, explained that emotional boundaries and differentiation are essential because individuals need to maintain their identity while remaining connected to family members.

His work highlights how conflict often increases when family members struggle to accept changing roles.

This perspective helps explain why the fiancé’s response became such an important turning point. The issue was no longer only about the wedding.

It became about whether he could recognize that protecting his future marriage sometimes requires setting limits with his own family. A partner’s loyalty does not mean rejecting parents; it means creating a healthy balance where the couple’s decisions are respected.

The larger lesson is that weddings often expose existing relationship patterns. A loving family can still have disagreements, but respect must remain the foundation.

The goal is not to “win” against a difficult relative. The goal is to build a marriage where both partners feel supported, protected, and free to make choices about their shared future.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters advised limiting information, protecting wedding plans, and preventing the MIL from interfering

Annual_Government_80 − Don’t tell her anything ever.

I think only tell her the location of the ceremony on the day. And maybe have a guard outside. She sounds absolutely horrific.

Active-Echidna6834 − Don’t say anything. Never tell her. If she is the type of woman to call your officiant and talk trash

about you to this person she would have no problem in trying to take down your business.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the last few years is you never tell anyone anything don’t tell them if you bought a house don’t tell them how much...

Don’t tell people anything. Though I would confront her about the things she said about you don’t let that slide.

These Redditors joked about using official responses or dramatic reveals to handle the MIL’s attempted sabotage

McflyThrowaway01 − I would send her a letter or letter in an email with letterhead that lets her know that company policy doesnt allow for MILs to call and cancel...

however, as the bride of this very event, you are able to cancel her invite to the wedding. Xoxo

star_b_nettor − Official company letterhead. .. Dear Mrs mother in law to be,

It is the policy of this company that only the couple who are getting married can cancel or change any of the information for their account.

Even in the event of a fatal disaster, both death certificates would need to be presented for the officiant

to be cancelled and any deposit to be refunded to both affected families. Sincerely, CEO of official company

Snowspanksstars − It’s one of those dream moments, MIL: “I want the manager”

Jenna: ‘Ok let me go get the manager’ You show up “ta-da! You rang? ???” The MIL: ! [gif](giphy|EdRgVzb2X3iJW) \*insert popcorn and deck chairs

These users recommended password-protecting vendors and keeping wedding details private for security.

CapableOutside8226 − Put passwords on every single vendor.

blondeheartedgoddess − Date and time only, and password protect everything: vendors, venue, etc.

Since she failed to cancel your officiant, she will definitely try the others.

I'd love to see the dress your child designed.

It sounds like it's a real winner if you're having it created from their design. Best wishes for a long and happy marriage. Your intended sounds like a keeper.

This commenter shared a positive experience with a Halloween wedding and encouraged embracing unique celebrations

Mindless-Charity4889 − Just want say that we had a Halloween costume wedding back in October, 1998. It was great.

- people still describe it as the most fun wedding they’ve attended, almost 30 years later

if we talk to friends and mention another attendee, we can describe the costume and they know exactly who we mean - capes are cool

You can hide behind your costume, which paradoxically allows you to reveal your true self.

It’s similar to how alcohol allows us to reveal our desires even if we aren’t actually drunk.

Conversely, I did attend a wedding that was pot luck and it didn’t work well. It was a lot of salads and deserts, no mains to be seen.

If you do this, you should have a way for the guests to coordinate so that you don’t have too much of one thing and none of another.

These commenters emphasized that the fiancé needs to set firm boundaries with his mother

slm4444 − Please. Your FIANCE needs to put his foot down with HIS mother. Otherwise she uis going to be a problem forever.

If he is a mommy's boy You need to step back and consider what you do. You've seen your future.

Holiday_Horse3100 − Do not invite her. When she asks why tell her that since she considers you to be rude, disrespectful, sinful

and undeserving of her son you are doing her a favor by not inflicting yourself and your wedding on her. Be petty-very petty.

Then set up a security removal plan I’d she does show up and plan on joining your future sibling in-laws on going no contact.

whatupmygliplops − wtf kind of formatting is this? Posting below in case anyone actually wants to read your post:

These Redditors enjoyed the idea of turning the situation into a humorous public moment during the wedding

Mean-Significance692 − Jenna could, as part of the ceremony, include a little anecdote about how

Jenna should drop her own boss as a client and Jenna and OP can have a nice little laugh about it. Publicly.

Superb-Passenger-202 − These kinds of businesses should also circulate a bad client list and list the exact reasons for their made up complaints.

Zbornak_Nyland − I beg you please familiarize yourself with the concept of paragraphs. I was out after three run on sentences.

Should the bride have revealed the truth about owning the business immediately, or was staying quiet the better move? How would you handle a relative trying to sabotage your big day? Share your thoughts below!
