MIL Promises Kids a Camping Trip After Parents Say No, Then Gets Shut Down

Grandparents can be an amazing part of a child’s life, but there is a big difference between creating special memories and making parenting decisions without permission.

Sometimes the hardest boundaries to set are the ones involving family.

The original poster (OP) has always allowed her son to enjoy an annual camping trip with his grandparents, but things changed when her mother-in-law started making plans involving OP’s younger daughter too.

Despite multiple conversations and clear refusals, MIL made a promise directly to the child without asking the parents first.

Read on to find out how OP plans to handle this family conflict.

Mother worries after her MIL promises a camping trip to her kids without asking first

MIL Promises Kids a Camping Trip After Parents Say No, Then Gets Shut Down
not the actual photo

'MIL wrote a check her ass can't cash, how would you go about handling this?'

Every year for the last 5 years, my in laws go on a camping trip to the ocean

with some friends of theirs, the friend's kid, and the last 3 years, they've

taken my son to play with the other kids. The last year or so, she's been

jealous that her friend's entire family goes but no one in our family goes

other than our son. I've been warned numerous times by my husband and

his brother that traveling with them is miserable and to never put myself

through it and it's been kind of cool for my son to have a couple days away

from us to be a big boy with the other kids. My daughter recently turned 4

and ever since they got back this year, she's been begging for my daughter

and I to accompany them on their trip.

Now my 4 year old is a late bloomer potty trainer, afraid of the dark, has

never been camping before, and the ocean campground they go to is 3ish

hours away, so not a quick drive if she freaks out in the middle of the night.

She also hates my mother in law with the flaming passion only a toddler

can when they decide they don't like something.

Another issue is that my mother in law and her friend drink like fish from 9

am-9 pm. I was not made aware of this until this recent year. The other kids

on this trip are 4 years older than my daughter at the least and the oldest is

12, so I don't think they're responsible enough to look after her, nor would

I expect them to. At this point I don't trust my mother in law to keep an eye

on her either. The friend told me it would be nice to have me along so I can

keep an eye on all the kids so they could have adult time. So basically I am a

glorified babysitter to them clearly.

My mother in law has asked me 3x if my daughter could go next year and

my husband and I have shot her down every time. Apparently she didn't get

the hint because my daughter went poop for the first time at my mother in

law's house and out of earshot of my husband (I wasn't there), she told my

daughter that because she was potty trained now, she gets to go with

them on the camping trip next year.

My daughter told my husband in the car on their way home and we are

both completely PISSED obviously. We weren't even going to let my son go

next year and now she has told them both they could go without asking us.

We are trying to figure out how to. A) Break the news to the kids they

aren't going because they'll be heartbroken and. B) How to best confront

my MIL about this.. Any ideas? Advice? Tips? Solidarity? Booze?

One of the hardest parts of parenting is realizing that other people can love your children deeply and still overstep in ways that are not okay.

Grandparents often want to create special memories, but the role of a grandparent does not replace the role of a parent.

Decisions about a child’s safety, comfort, and experiences belong to the parents.

In this situation, OP’s frustration is not really about a camping trip.

The trip itself could have been a wonderful childhood memory under different circumstances.

The bigger issue is that MIL moved from requesting permission to making promises on the parents’ behalf.

Telling a four-year-old that she “gets to go” because she accomplished a milestone turned a parental decision into a reward system controlled by someone else.

Now OP and her husband are left having to disappoint their child over a promise they never made.

The situation also reveals a common family dynamic: grandparents sometimes focus on the exciting parts of being involved with grandchildren while underestimating the responsibilities involved.

A fun camping trip with older children is very different from caring for a young child who is still developing independence, has fears, and may need help during the night.

OP is not criticizing her daughter; she is realistically considering her needs.

There is also a concerning expectation from MIL’s friend that OP should attend mainly so the adults can relax.

Wanting another adult present for support is understandable, but expecting a parent to sacrifice their own vacation time to supervise everyone else’s children changes the nature of the invitation.

This is why the most important conversation is not about whether camping is good or bad.

It is about authority. MIL can suggest. She can ask. She can invite.

But she cannot promise experiences, trips, or privileges that require parental approval.

When speaking to MIL, a long explanation may actually create room for debate. A simple boundary is often stronger:

“We need you to stop telling the kids they can do things before asking us.

We appreciate that you love spending time with them, but decisions about trips and overnight stays are ours to make.

If you promise something again without checking with us first, we will have to reconsider those opportunities.”

As for the children, they do not need a dramatic explanation.

They can hear something simple: “Grandma got excited and talked about plans before we decided what works for our family.

We’ll let you know about trips when we make plans.”

The disappointment may be uncomfortable, but protecting a child from learning that other adults can override their parents is more important than avoiding one unhappy moment.

Grandparents create the best memories when they work with parents, not around them.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters suggested OP plan a separate family trip instead of allowing the camping arrangement

opine704 − Do they go the same week every year? Plan a different trip or

event during that time. In the next week or so - casually mention that

you're looking into taking a family trip next year. Act kind of offhand about

it. You don't want her glomming onto your plans.

In January mention 3-4 different places for the possible family trip and say

you're having trouble getting schedules to align. Then don't mention it

again until 2 weeks before MIL goes on her big trip. Then you say

something like, oh I'm so sorry I thought you knew that our family trip is that week too.

We ultimately decided to schedule during that week so you and friend

don't have to worry about 2 small kids during YOUR break. I know you look

forward to spending that time together. Friendships are SO important. (Pass the bean dip please. )

HenryBellendry − Book your own trip (if you even like camping in the first

place). When JNMIL says something be clear that you’re not comfortable

with DD going on that trip yet, nor do you want to be a glorified babysitter so they can have adult time.

possible-penguin − OP, check out the drowning statistics for kids of

different ages. Believe it or not, the 12 year old is at nearly as much risk as

the 4 year old starting in the early teen years, drowning risk goes up again

after falling in middle childhood. None of these kids should be on this trip.

notastepfordwife − Go camping with your kids, without your MIL.

Annual-Cancel-7669 − You and your husband take the kids to do something

else more tailored to their likes instead. Frame it as a choice they won’t have any hard feelings

This group focused on the safety risks of children being around alcohol, water, and poor supervision

tedivertire − Wtf. Drunk supervising adults on a trip with many possible

death scenarios? Just say f__k no. The annoyance of a beef with MIL is way preferable to a call mid-trip that will ruin your life.

xgorgeoustormx − A) Time to break the news. The lack of supervision alone

is a massive risk for n__lect, endangerment, and heinous abuse by other

adults or children. It’s a big no and nobody could even question why! Hello!

I’d rather my child be alive, and not be unsupervised on a beach with drunks.

jennsb2 − Your kids should not be near a large body of water with only

drunk adults to “care” for them. This is the hardest no in my book and the

chances of drowning are way too high in this scenario. Stick to your refusal and plan a fun trip for all of you on the same dates.

The audacity to ask you to babysit all of the kids they so desperately want

on this trip is insane. Tell them to just enjoy some fun adult time.

EducationalTrack9990 − If anything happens to one of these precious

kiddos while under "i__oxicated adults care", they will be traumatized for

life.   It's absolutely your responsibility to protect them.    This nonsense of

telling your children they can do something without parents' consent

should earn her at least a one month no contact time out.    Next time, double it.     You're training an immature grown toddler.

As parents, it's okay to disappoint people.    Better than kicking yourself later.

These Redditors advised explaining the situation to the children in an age-appropriate way and offering safer alternatives

Netflxnschill − C- talk to your kids, in kid friendly terms, why MIL is not

allowed to take them camping anymore, and D- tell them as a family you

are going on a trip together- and go somewhere else. Teach daughter

about camping, show older kid what proper supervision is when camping

and why it’s so important, and enjoy family time without MIL.

madgeystardust − Tell the kids they won’t be going because you’ll be

taking them to do something else they love instead. They won’t give a s__t

about MIL’s camping trip then. Also teach your kids that when adults make

plans with them instead of the parents the answer will always be an automatic no.

Careless-Image-885 − They're probably making the 12 year old babysit.

Confront MIL bluntly. Tell her that YOU are the parent and you are angry

that she took it upon herself to tell daughter that she was going on the

trip. Tell her that you don't trust her due to alcohol consumption. Explain

to the kids why they won't go. Your daughter already doesn't like her GM.

She may not know exactly why but she has good instincts. Plan something

fun with your children during that week. Go on your own little vacation.

SoOverYouAll − I would absolutely tell your kids the truth. That you have

just found out that the adults are drinking alcohol to excess and it means,

especially with water in the mix, that that is no longer a safe place for them

to be. Water can move in unexpected ways and there should always be adults that are able to help if needed.

That you know they are disappointed but MIL doesn’t have the authority to

make decisions for your family and you are sorry she got their hopes up before talking to you.

OP’s frustration isn’t really about a camping trip, it’s about a grandparent making promises to children before getting parental permission.

After multiple clear “no” answers, MIL went directly to OP’s daughter and created an expectation she had no authority to make.

Add in concerns about drinking, supervision, a young child’s comfort level, and a stressful first camping experience, and OP has valid reasons to hold the boundary.

Some may think the kids are missing out on a fun family tradition, but parents get the final say on trips, especially when they involve safety and childcare.

Do you think MIL crossed a line by promising the trip to the kids, or should OP reconsider letting them go?
