Neighbor Installs Misdelivered Ring Cameras on His Own House, Then Blames Amazon When the Owner Confronts Him

A misdelivered package is usually an annoying but easy problem to fix. Most people simply hand it over and move on.

Unfortunately, that simple outcome depends on the person who received it being willing to do the right thing.

That was not what happened to one homeowner after new security devices were accidentally delivered next door.

The neighbor initially claimed there was no package, even though the delivery app clearly showed the items at his address.

After being shown the proof, he eventually produced the devices, but there was another problem: they had already been installed and linked to his own setup.

The poster refused to accept them and insisted on replacements, which only added another argument to an already difficult relationship.

Keep reading to see why the poster is now wondering whether calling the police may be the only option left.

A homeowner confronts a neighbor who installed security devices from a package delivered to the wrong address

'Neighbor Stole Package and is Now Upset Im Forcing Him to Replace Items?'

I recently ordered a couple new ring devices for my home. They were

delivered to his house by mistake. I walked over to get my package and

found that he had recently installed a ring device in the front.

I knocked on the door and explained that my package had been delivered

to him by mistake and that I wanted it. He said he had no packages of mine.

I showed him the pictures I was sent via the app showing the packages at

his from door. With his address. He said to give him a moment.

The man then proceeded to uninstall the ring cameras from his home to

give them to me. I explained that it would be useless to me as it is setup to

his account, his wifi and that I don't want him having access to my home or

my family. I told him to replace or the police would get involved.

He grumbled and left. He returns with a new device and explains how he

shouldn't have to replace them because its Amazons fault. I told him that

its not. Its him being a thief and s__tty person to boot. I have had issues

with him in the past. Drinking, being loud, aggressive. I'm at my wits end. I

don't want things to take a turn and something happen.

So I ask.. Any advice on how I can make this relationship any… better? I feel

as though I've tried it all and my only recourse here is to call the police every time he is being s__tty.

It is unsettling when a mistake exposes something much bigger about a person you already do not trust.

In this case, the delivery error itself was harmless. Packages sometimes end up at the wrong address.

What changed the situation was what happened afterward: the neighbor apparently opened the package, installed the Ring devices on his own property, denied having them when confronted, and only admitted what happened after being shown delivery evidence.

That would leave most people feeling violated, angry, and uncertain about what he might do next.

The emotional conflict is understandable because the homeowner does not simply want the devices back.

They want to feel comfortable living beside someone who has already been loud, aggressive, and difficult in the past.

Calling him a thief in the moment probably came from accumulated frustration rather than one isolated incident.

But when someone has a history of aggressive behavior, winning the argument can become less important than reducing opportunities for another confrontation.

A fresh perspective is that improving this relationship may not mean becoming friendlier.

Sometimes the healthiest version of a difficult neighbor relationship is polite distance.

The goal does not need to be trust, closeness, or even mutual understanding. It can simply be predictability: brief interactions, clear limits, and no unnecessary engagement.

The homeowner has already communicated the important boundary: their property is not available for the neighbor to take or use.

There is probably little value in continuing to debate his explanation that Amazon was responsible.

A delivery mistake explains why the package reached his porch; it does not explain installing someone else’s equipment.

The practical path forward is documentation rather than repeated confrontation.

Save delivery photographs, messages, camera footage, dates of disturbances, and descriptions of serious incidents.

Keep future exchanges short and neutral.

If another package is taken, property is damaged, threats occur, or behavior becomes unsafe, using appropriate building management or law-enforcement channels is more sensible than handling everything face-to-face.

The relationship may never become warm, and that is okay.

With a difficult neighbor, success can simply mean creating enough boundaries that neither household has much reason to interact at all.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors recommended reporting package theft and using police if it happens again

TearEmUpTara − Stealing mail is a felony offense. Just saying, if it happens again, maybe report it.

BabyCheese011922 − Damn that sucks. I had a neighbor like that once who

was just constantly proving to be the worst neighbor. Would torment me.

So one day I was tired of his s__t and we called the police and got him

charged for all the stuff he stole from us and got him citations for all the

s__t he has growing on our side of the fence. I was done being the bigger person lol.

This group suggested filing missing-package claims and getting refunds or replacements

KennethRSloan − file a claim with Amazon. they did not deliver the package to you.

Witty_Primary6108 − I always just report lost packages and get

replacements. The delivery people will be leaving stuff up on top of stuff in

the open in its product packaging. We have had a couple things stolen.

TransportationLazy55 − I work in customer service and would describe this

as a situation where the item was scanned delivered but not received and i would ask for refund.

If you leave everything out about talking to the neighbor there’s a good

chance you’ll get your money back and never need to speak to the

neighbor again Yeah yeah morally amazon shouldn’t have to eat the cost of the neighbor’s theft but quite often they will

These users blamed the neighbor for knowingly keeping items that clearly were not his

Fullmoon-Angua − Look at it this way, you've already made the relationship

slightly better because you called him out on his thieving and he backed

down. This means the chances of him even trying to f__k with you again are a bit less in future.

Negative-Narwhal-725 − stay away from him when he is drinking

KableKutterz_WxAB − He should be responsible & buy you a new one. He

knew to whom it was supposed to go to, and should have done the right

thing to deliver it to you. It would have been a simple act, but he decided to

receive these items under deceptive or dishonest means. S__ew him!

These users distinguished accidental misdelivery from knowingly keeping someone else’s package

Sufficient-Wolf-1818 − I’ve mindlessly opened Amazon deliveries without

checking the name on the package, but quickly realized my error. the

opened package was delivered to the correct person with an apology if

within a mile. It would be hard if the package contained good chocolate.

Harry_Gorilla − It depends who delivered them, but he may be correct…

and also s__tty. If Amazon delivered them then you should have requested

a refund because the items were misdelivered, and it’s their fault, so their

responsibility to recover the items. If USPS delivered them incorrectly he

can legally keep them, and you should again request a refund because the items were never delivered to you.

Source: former postman. Edit: regarding improving the relationship - file

for the misdelivered items, get a refund, get your own new orders, and let

him return the ones he bought you. Once items are delivered to the wrong address it’s the post office’s fault, not the recipient.

There was a mistake in his favor, and while it’s frustrating, he has become

entitled to benefit from the post office’s mistake… despite the immorality of doing so.

What began as a misdelivered package became much more serious once the neighbor installed equipment that clearly wasn’t his and only returned it after being confronted with proof.

Given the history of drinking, aggression, and boundary problems, the poster’s concern about escalation seems understandable.

At this point, keeping interactions brief and documented may matter more than trying to force a friendly relationship.

Do you think calling the police for future incidents would be reasonable, or should the poster keep trying to resolve things directly? How would you handle a neighbor you no longer trust?
