The most significant addition to “Captain America: Brave New World” is Harrison Ford taking over the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, following William Hurt‘s passing in 2022. This recasting decision contrasts with Marvel’s choice not to recast Black Panther after Chadwick Boseman’s death.
Ford’s Ross is now the President of the United States, potentially even becoming the Red Hulk, which could position him as the film’s villain. A
dditionally, Shira Haas will debut as Sabra, a mutant capable of transferring her life essence, while WWE Superstar Seth Rollins has filmed scenes, possibly as King Cobra from the Serpent Society, though reshoots suggest his role might be cut.
What Is The Plot Of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’?
So far, plot details for “Captain America: Brave New World” have been kept under wraps in true Marvel fashion. However, at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, director Julias Onah described the film as a “paranoid thriller.”
It appears that “Brave New World” will follow in the footsteps of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” one of the most critically acclaimed movies in the MCU, which drew inspiration from 1970s political espionage thrillers like “Three Days of the Condor” (starring Robert Redford, who played the villain Alexander Pierce in “Winter Soldier”).
Themes of broken political systems and government distrust have been central to the Captain America films, but it remains to be seen what kind of fascist conspiracy Sam Wilson will face.
Harrison Ford is stepping into the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross following the passing of William Hurt, who portrayed Ross in four films. Wilson and Ross have a history, as Ross imprisoned Wilson at the end of “Civil War” for violating the Sokovia Accords.
Executive producer Nate Moore hinted at a clash between Sam Wilson and Thunderbolt Ross in the film, stating, “Well, look, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, he is going to bring his own team to play… There will be some natural sparks there, which I think will be really fun.”
