Auction Regular Uses Other People to Win Everything, Until One Bidder Outsmarts Him

A little friendly competition can make an event more exciting, but it changes when someone starts treating the whole thing like a personal power display.

Most people are willing to lose gracefully, but watching someone abuse an advantage can make even the calmest person want to push back.

The original poster attended a charity auction where one famous member of a small community seemed determined to win nearly every silent auction item.

At first, she ignored his unusual strategy and let him have his way.

However, after he openly bragged about having other people bid for him and acted like nobody else had a chance, she decided one particular item was worth fighting for.

Keep reading to find out how the final seconds changed everything.

Charity bidder tries to dominate an auction until one determined rival fights back

not the actual photo

'Brag about how you’ll just outbid me? Fine, I’ll just outplay you?'

This is incredibly stupid and petty, but here we are.

I was at a charity auction for a very niche world this past weekend (I’m keeping things vague

as it is such a niche world) and the mood at these events is always jovial, brash, loud, and fun.

Everyone’s having a good time. There’s a live auction with a simultaneous silent auction that

ends a few minutes after the live one. It’s a positive, almost celebratory atmosphere.

Well, one of the well-known figures in this little world was bidding on what seemed like half

the silent auction items. We’ll call him Steve. He always upped bids by just the minimum $1

and it felt like he was impossibly everywhere—items were on tables lining a large banquet

hall, so not just one central location. There was one fun themed home decor item I loved and

had bid on a few times that I was keeping an eye on. When I went to update my bid at one

point, a woman was standing in front of it with Steve standing next to him. She immediately

upped my bid then stood with her hands on the table in front of it, blocking it almost like a

dog guarding a toy. Okaaaaay, whatever.

I playfully said something like “Ah, you really want it, eh? Man, I see your name everywhere;

it’s like, just give up if you see Steve’s name!” Steve: “Yeah, I have 3 people out there watching

the tables and bidding for me.”

Okaaaaay…this is blatantly against the rules (as is “guarding” the item), but I’m a nobody to

this dudebro’s Somebody in this world so whatever. Me: “Should I even bother to try bidding

on it any more?” Steve, condescendingly: “You can, but I’ll just outbid you.” 🤨 Okay d__che, I

see you. Whatever, you can have this cool thing if your ego needs it that badly. I walked away.

At the end of the live auction, they announced it was the final 60 seconds for bids and I

noticed Steve was not near said cool item so I sped over to the table and excitedly placed my

bet. Then I realized the nearby (different) woman was one of Steve’s assigned bidders and

she immediately outbid me. During those 30-ish seconds as she wrote the bid, I asked, “Oh,

you’re bidding for Steve, eh?” “Yeah…” She looked apologetic and embarrassed. Figuring let’s

at least make this sporting, I asked, “Well, do you have a top bid?” “No—he just told me to be

sure to win it.” Cool. Cool cool cool.

Well, she happened to finish writing her bid and set the paper down just as the auctioneer

started counting down the last 10 seconds. I immediately snatched up the paper and placed

the winning bid with 1 second to spare, shamelessly throwing my 50yro arms up in the air

with a “WOOO HOOOOOO!” of victory. He may outbid me, but I outplayed him.

I felt a little bad for the woman not doing what he’d impressed upon her to do, but SUCK IT

STEVE IT’S MINE.. Oh and it looks AWESOME in my house.

Competition can be fun until one person begins treating a shared event like a private contest they are entitled to dominate.

What makes these moments so satisfying is not always the prize itself, but the feeling of restoring fairness after someone has tried to tilt the rules in their favor.

On the surface, this was a petty dispute over a decorative auction item. Underneath it, however, was a clash between two very different attitudes.

The poster approached the event as part fundraiser, part entertainment, and part friendly competition.

Steve appeared to approach it as a display of status and control.

He reportedly assigned several people to watch different tables, instructed them to keep bidding without a ceiling, and openly told another bidder that trying was pointless because he would simply outspend them.

That behavior did more than make him competitive. It removed much of the spontaneity and good humor that made the auction enjoyable in the first place.

A useful way to understand the poster’s reaction is through psychological reactance.

When people feel that their freedom to choose or participate is being restricted, they often become more motivated to reclaim it.

Steve’s condescending certainty did not merely communicate that he wanted the item. It implied that the poster’s participation was meaningless.

The last-second bid therefore became symbolic.

Winning the object was enjoyable, but outmaneuvering someone who had treated the outcome as predetermined was the real reward.

There is also a distinction between being competitive and being entitled. Competitive people still accept uncertainty.

They understand that another participant might win.

Entitled competitors try to eliminate uncertainty through influence, intimidation, or rule-bending, then act as though the result is already theirs.

That is why the poster’s final move felt clever rather than cruel.

She did not sabotage the auction or prevent anyone from bidding.

She simply used the remaining time better than Steve’s proxy did.

The broader lesson is that fairness matters even in silly situations.

People remember when someone makes a communal event feel rigged, especially when that person assumes others will quietly accept it.

The poster’s victory was small, theatrical, and admittedly petty, but it also restored the spirit of the auction: everyone gets a chance, nobody owns the outcome in advance, and confidence is not the same thing as entitlement.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors wanted the poster to inflate the bids and force Steve to pay far more

goodenough4govtwork − Well played. I figured you'd go place an outrageous bid and make

Steve pay out the nose.

disparatelyseeking − Next time wait till the end when he's not around and put outrageous

bids 10x what they are worth so his helpers can bid $1 more and he gets fleeced.

roggy3311 − Place an outrageous bid of your own, then immediately follow it with his name

and the outrageous bid + 1.

Redditnewb2023 − I thought she was gonna place an outrageously high bid just so his

minion would have to one up it and end up paying $2500 for some paper plates or

something.

Dry-Character-6331 − As soon as she said "no" to the top price question, I would have run

the bid up significantly and allowed her to keep outbidding me but causing "Steve" to pay a

hefty price

chortle-guffaw2 − I would have been tempted to double the current bid, knowing he'd

outbid me by a dollar.

throwaway661375735 − I would have put an outrageous amount down, for him to out bid by

$1 at that point.

ChimoEngr − Winning the item was a victory for you, but I'd have played it differently. I'd

have kept on going back, and upping the bids by a fair amount, so that at the end of the

night, Steve was paying out a s__t ton, as his proxies matched my bid.

These users urged reporting Steve because his tactics undermined the auction and could discourage future bidders

Alone-Tart4762 − You definitely need to give them a heads up because it is discouraging

(maybe not to you but definitely to others) and if it’s such a niche thing, other people being

able to win makes a difference and keeps them involved. If I saw this, I would be raising HELL after.

I would have gone around and asked them to confirm that his name was written in his

handwriting every time, otherwise the bid is discarded. I have money I would bet that Steve is

a reseller if this stuff is so niche.

Gwendolyn-NB − So WTF not just report "steve" and his minions for blatantly breaking the

set rules? These are typically charity auctions, and people do not react well to others cheating

when it comes to charity as why should people bid on anything if "steve" is just going to win

it anyways?

The charity is the one that will be hurting once people stop coming/bidding because of

Steve's antics

TwistedxBoi − I get this is a charity so you felt like reporting him to the organizators would

feel like being a tattletail or whatever. .. But he ruined the spirit of the auction. I would

absolutely report this.

What began as a playful charity auction turned into a tiny battle of ego, strategy, and perfectly timed revenge.

Steve may have had extra bidders stationed around the room, but the poster had patience, nerve, and one final second on the clock.

Many readers would probably call the victory petty, but also deeply satisfying.

Was the last-second bid fair game after Steve ignored the spirit of the rules, or did both sides take the competition too seriously? Share your thoughts below.
