Brother Sleeps With His Sibling’s Girlfriend, Then Demands An Invite To His Wedding Years Later

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Family betrayal can leave scars that never fully disappear, especially when the person who hurt you is someone who was supposed to have your back.

OP never expected his own brother to become the person who shattered his relationship and his trust.

Years later, OP has moved forward and found happiness with someone who went through a similar betrayal.

But as his wedding approached, old wounds reopened when his family pressured him to forgive and include the brother who caused so much pain.

Now OP is questioning whether protecting his peace means turning his back on family.

Man cuts off his brother and parents after a betrayal resurfaces before his wedding, leaving family ties broken

Brother Sleeps With His Sibling’s Girlfriend, Then Demands An Invite To His Wedding Years Later
not the actual photo

'My brother slept with and ran off with my ex and now wants an invite to my wedding, getting my parents uninvited in the process?'

For the record, I tried posting this 3 days ago but my account was too new.

I(24m) wasn't even going to make a post about this, but my brother, who I'll

call Turk(25m), made 4 posts about it, so I thought I should share my side of

the story. I'll use the same names he did for the sake of simplicity. My fiance is "Maria"(24f) and my ex is "Jen"(24f)

A little over 5 years ago, my brother started dating Maria, my (now) fiance.

3 months after they started dating, they set me up with her (now ex) best

friend, Jen. The 4 of us did a lot together since the girls were best friends.

Turk and Maria dated for a year, and Jen and I dated for 9 months. At the

end of our relationship, I came home early and found Turk and Jen having

s__ in my bed. After I processed the situation, I called Maria because I'd

want to know if I was in her place. She came over, and we confronted Turk

and Jen. They dumped us, and I found out 2 days later, started dating each

other. It broke me. I came home to find my brother f__king my girlfriend

only to run off with her. I had to move back in with my parents. It was

infuriating because they kept talking about how happy Turk and Jen were.

Throughout the next couple of months, Maria and I started talking. We

were two people in similar s__tty situations, and we found some comfort in

each other. 4 months after we got dumped, Maria and I officially started

dating. 6 months after we got dumped, Turk found out that Jen was

cheating on him and she left him for the other guy (I actually only found

this out today from reading Turks post). Maria would get the occasional

message from Turk, trying to reconnect but she ignored him.

Anyway, moving on to now. Maria and I are engaged and getting married in

September. My parents were invited until my mom called me and

threatened to not come if I didn't invite Turk. I told her to not bother

coming regardless. In my mother's eyes, Turk can do no wrong. When he

fucked and started dating my ex, I told my parents everything he did and

my mom tried defending him. Our relationship isn't the greatest but it was

somewhat decent. After I uninvited my parents (I only uninvited my mom

but my dad texted me and said he's not coming if my mom isn't) Turk blew

up my phone trying to get ahold of me. This is the first time he's even tried reaching out to me in 4 years.

Like I said before, Turk posted about this situation here on reddit aswell

and apparently my parents told him that Maria and I were getting married

and that started this whole thing of them getting uninvited. He's stopped

calling me but he's blowing up my phone with texts begging me to re-invite

my parents and possibly give him an invite.. So yeah, I just wanted to get my side out there..

UPDATE

I posted a couple of months ago and thought I should update.

Here's a summary since my original post is pretty long. My brother, Turk,

set me up with my ex. I walked in on him and my ex having sex in my bed,

and It broke me. My wife, Maria, was also cheated on, so we understood

each other. Maria and I dated for four years until we got married a couple

of weeks ago. 2 months before my wedding, Turk talked to my parents and

got my mom to try to get him invited, but all that did was get my mom

uninvited. My dad didn't come because my mom didn't. That's basically it.

My wedding was amazing, it went so smoothly. I didn't hear from Turk. He

didn't even show up as far as I know. My parents didn't show up and try to

make a scene or anything, which was good. My mom didn't text me, but my

dad texted me saying congratulations. I guess Turk talked to my mom

because she texted me shortly after my honeymoon, basically begging me

to forgive Turk because he's my brother. I didn't text back. It's not worth it.

That was a week ago, and I haven't gotten any other texts from my mom or Turk since.

And that's it. The funny part is that Turk is still trying to get our mom to

solve his problems. But all of that's behind me now.

Some betrayals hurt differently because they come from the people who are supposed to protect us.

When trust is broken by a stranger, people often expect disappointment.

But when it comes from a sibling or someone close enough to be considered family, the pain can feel like a violation of the relationship itself.

In this situation, the OP was not simply deciding whether to invite someone to a wedding.

He was deciding whether people who ignored his pain for years deserved access to one of the most important moments of his life.

The emotional weight of this story comes from a combination of betrayal, abandonment, and unresolved accountability.

The OP experienced two major losses at once: the end of his relationship and the damage done to his relationship with his brother.

What made the situation more painful was not only what happened between Turk and Jen, but the way the aftermath unfolded.

Instead of receiving support, the OP felt pressured to move on while others celebrated the relationship that began from his heartbreak.

A different perspective is that families often struggle when one person chooses distance after being hurt.

Some relatives may interpret boundaries as punishment because they focus on restoring peace rather than addressing the original harm.

Turk and the parents may believe that time should have healed the situation, but healing does not automatically happen when the person who caused the damage never takes meaningful responsibility.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same thing.

A person can let go of anger while still deciding that certain relationships are no longer safe or healthy.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s wedding decision was about more than an old argument.

A wedding invitation is not simply a formality; it represents trust, support, and closeness.

For the OP, inviting Turk without any real acknowledgment of the betrayal may have felt like pretending the past never happened.

His choice was not necessarily about making his brother suffer, but about refusing to minimize his own experience.

At the same time, long-term family conflicts are rarely repaired through silence alone.

If reconciliation ever becomes possible, it would likely require genuine accountability, not pressure from parents or requests to “just forgive.”

The person who caused harm has to recognize the impact of their actions before rebuilding trust can begin.

Ultimately, this story highlights an important reality: family connections are valuable, but they are not unconditional permission to ignore someone’s pain.

Protecting a meaningful life event from unresolved hurt does not make someone cruel.

Sometimes creating distance is not about closing the door forever, it is about finally giving yourself the space to heal.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters criticized the family’s reaction

beb252 − Your mom downplaying what he did to you is kinda telling who's

side she's on. I've come across that piece. It seems in Turks eyes; he didn't

do anything wrong either. And trying to get ahold of Maria is also trying to

steal her from you. .. You're better off without all of them from your life,

moving forward. Good luck with your upcoming wedding.

Figuringoutcrafting − I read his post and think he is just as slimy now. Op,

you are good. I am also super proud of you for standing up for yourself, it’s

hard. You are now my prime example of what I would like to be in that

regards. Please make sure you have security at your wedding.

Also tell your wonderful soon to be wife’s maid of honor. She will prep to

make sure things go alright when your mother and brother show up.

AdAccomplished6870 − We see this time and again. To other family

members, they don't care about bad behavior that doesn't hurt them, they

just care when their ability to have (or represent) a big happy family is

compromised. So they always put it on the injured party, make excuses,

gaslight, or say crap like 'that is all in the past'.

They don't care about anything except letting themselves believe that they

have a good family. S__ew that. Your brother is an AH of the highest order,

and it is fine that you never talk to him again. Your mom can make her

choices. As can your dad. Just let them know, there are consequences.

You and Maria are healthy and mature and much more likely to be giving

grandkids or having family events. If they want in on that, they have to be

in. If they turn their back on you know, there is no guarantee that the door

is going to stay open. They have to make their decisions, and their decisions have consequences.

wlfwrtr − As I told your brother the second he even thought about sleeping

with your girlfriend he gave up the right to have any part in either yours or

Maria's lives. The minute your mom decided to side with your brother she

gave up the same rights. The minute your dad stood up for your mom he gave up the same rights.

I don't know if they have siblings but I have to wonder if when they were

dating your dad had slept with your mom's sister would she have been as

forgiving. If dad's brother slept with your mom would he have been so

forgiving. I'd also keep any children you have away from them all too.

If they played favorites with their own children they are likely to with their grandchildren.

This group warned that OP should prepare for possible wedding drama

Responsible_Judge007 − Oh Jesus! I would say: ignore them but we all

know they will crash your wedding. So maybe you need security or another

location. Oh and LC/NC with your mom/both parents.

Mundane_Bike_912 − Your brother and parents suck. Hire security because I bet they try and make a scene.

Straysmom − Why, exactly, would you want your rotten brother to come to

your wedding. The same rotten brother who screwed your girlfriend in

your bed, ran off with her after the 2 of them dumped you & Maria after

being caught. And now wants to come to your wedding? ?!! Is he rotten enough to put a move on Maria at Y'alls wedding?

Or at least cause a scene while begging her to take him back. It sure seems

like something he would do. I'm sorry that your parents defend their

golden child the way they do. You deserve better.

These users expressed support for OP’s future with Maria and encouraged him to focus on building a healthier life away from toxic relatives

PurpleStar1965 − I just read your brothers post. All I can do is wish you and

Maria and lovely and long life together. Congratulations 🎉🍾

kb-g − Your brother is an i__ot. Hope you have a wonderful life with Maria. X

Farmwife71 − I read your brother's post before yours. Just my opinion, but

I'm guessing he leaves a slime trail everywhere he goes. You owe him

nothing, and it's time he and your parents learn that actions gave consequences.

OP’s wedding conflict was never just about an invitation, it was about years of betrayal, broken trust, and a family that expected forgiveness without accountability.

After Turk’s actions destroyed two relationships, OP chose to protect the peace of his wedding day rather than pretend everything was fine.

While some may believe family ties should eventually lead to reconciliation, others feel forgiveness cannot be demanded by people who never truly apologized.

Do you think OP was right to keep his brother and parents away, or should family always get another chance? Share your thoughts below!
