Summary:
- Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves struggled at the box office but has found success on Netflix, securing a spot in the platform’s global Top 10 in several countries.
- Despite financial challenges, the film’s growing popularity has sparked talk of a possible sequel.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves may have missed the mark at the box office, but it’s proving to be a hit on Netflix. Released in 2023, the fantasy adventure failed to break even, grossing $208.1 million on a $150 million budget. However, it’s now gained a second wind on Netflix, securing a spot in the platform’s Top 10 global movies for the week of September 30 to October 6.
According to Screen Rant, Honor Among Thieves brought in 3.2 million viewers and 7.2 million viewing hours, despite not being available in the U.S. on Netflix. The film topped local charts in countries like Croatia and Serbia. This streaming success comes amid the 50th anniversary of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game, likely boosting its relevance in 2024.
The star-studded cast includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. Set in the legendary fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons, the film blends humor, action, and an engaging storyline that critics praised, even as audiences initially stayed away.
Though it didn’t meet its $375 million break-even target, Honor Among Thieves has received accolades, winning the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form) in 2024, a prestigious honor in the world of science fiction and fantasy.
Hugh Grant, who played the character Forge, reflected on the movie’s lackluster performance. “Why didn’t anyone do market research before? I think that’s what went wrong. Basically, people just thought, ‘I don’t want to see a film about this game,’” Grant said.
Bradley Cooper even made a surprise cameo in the film, playing Holga’s (Rodriguez) halfling ex-husband, adding a fun Easter egg for fans.
As the film continues to rise in popularity, Chris Pine teased the possibility of a sequel, though financial hurdles remain a concern. “I think there’s a really good chance that we’ll make another one…and if they can figure out a financial way to make it work, they’ll do it,” Pine said.
For U.S. viewers, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is streaming on Paramount+, MGM+, and Prime Video.
Despite a rocky start, the movie’s Netflix success is breathing new life into a franchise that might just have more adventures left in the tank.
