Sega’s iconic arcade game Golden Axe is being chopped into an animated comedy series!
Comedy Central has placed a 10-episode order for the show, bringing the fantastical world of Golden Axe to life in a hilarious new way. The series is co-created by Mike McMahan (known for Star Trek: Lower Decks and Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (whose credits include American Dad and Napoleon Dynamite).
The story will center on the classic Golden Axe trio: the veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead. Once again, they’ll be facing off against the evil giant Death Adder, who just can’t seem to stay down for the count. Adding a twist to the dynamic is the introduction of Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and underprepared adventurer joining their ranks.
The series boasts a star-studded voice cast to bring these characters to life. Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) will lend his voice to the mighty Ax Battler, while Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty) takes on the fiery Tyris Flare. Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason) brings gruff charm to Gilius Thunderhead, and Danny Pudi (Community) steps into the role of the hapless Hampton Squib. Rounding out the cast is Carl Tart (Star Trek: Lower Decks) as the villainous Chronos “Evil” Lait from Golden Axe III.
Golden Axe, originally an arcade side-scrolling beat-’em-up launched in 1989, has remained relatively quiet since 2008’s Golden Axe: Beast Rider. However, Sega did announce plans to revive the franchise at The Game Awards last year. This animated series offers a fresh take on the classic characters and world.
McMahan and Chandler will serve as both showrunners and executive producers for Golden Axe. They’ll be joined by a team including representatives from Sega, Original Film, Titmouse animation studio, and others.
So, prepare for a hilarious and action-packed adventure as the Golden Axe warriors hack, slash, and quip their way through a new comedic quest!
