Family gatherings blend science enthusiasts with outlier views, testing tolerance during holidays. Gifts typically convey goodwill, yet some ideas aim to provoke under humor’s guise. One wife eyed a globe for her husband’s flat-earth cousin, anticipating an explosive reaction amid engineer relatives.

Friends cheered the prank; her spouse deferred judgment. In-laws likely favored peace. Would unwrapping ignite laughs or a lasting rift? Scroll down for the conspiracy clash and Reddit’s ruling on festive jabs.

WIBTA for getting my husband's cousin a Christmas gift that will definitely make him angry?

He (my cousin) is a flat earther.

He also thinks that space isn’t real and that the stars are projected onto a screen or something.

I want to get him a globe. I think it would be f**king hilarious.

My friends all think it would be f**king hilarious too.

My husband says it’s up to me.

I haven’t asked my in-laws what they think yet.

They’ll probably tell me no because they’re the type of people who never rock the boat.

My cousin will be sooooooo pissed, but I think it would be incredibly worth it.

The rest of the in-laws are engineers and other science-y types.

This cousin is just a “conspiritard” who listens to way too much Alex Jones.

I think getting him a globe would just be a bit of harmless fun.

But if that’s too harsh, a friend of mine also suggested that I get a globe for my husband instead

and just make sure the cousin is present when my husband opens it.

I await your judgment, Reddit.

Gift-giving during holidays carries social and emotional weight beyond the object itself. It represents thought, affection, and respect between people.

Intentionally selecting an item to provoke anger or embarrassment, such as a globe for someone who rejects a spherical Earth model, changes the act from generosity to ridicule. It turns kindness into mockery.

Psychological research on family interactions shows that deliberate provocation often escalates conflict instead of resolving differences. These moments can damage long-term trust.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula, an expert on interpersonal dynamics, explains that actions highlighting another person’s perceived flaws in a group setting reinforce defensiveness.

In a 2023 Psychology Today interview, she noted that public correction or mockery of deeply held beliefs activates threat responses. This makes individuals entrench further rather than reconsider their stance.

Flat Earth adherence, though factually unsupported, functions as an identity marker for some. It often connects to distrust of institutions and authority.

NASA’s educational resources confirm Earth’s sphericity through satellite imagery and orbital mechanics. Yet confronting adherents with contradictory symbols during festive gatherings rarely inspires reflection. It usually deepens division.

Family systems therapist Dr. Harriet Lerner emphasizes preserving relational safety during celebrations. In her book The Dance of Connection (HarperCollins, 2002), she warns against using humor as a weapon when the target lacks equal power to respond.

Here, the gift-giver holds situational advantage, the support of like-minded relatives, and the element of surprise. The recipient, outnumbered by science-oriented family members, faces public embarrassment.

Studies on holiday stress in the Journal of Family Psychology (2021) link intentional conflict initiation to long-term resentment. They also associate it with reduced future family contact.

Etiquette experts share this perspective. The Emily Post Institute advises that gifts should reflect thoughtfulness toward the recipient’s known preferences, not the giver’s agenda.

Their guideline on humorous presents specifies that genuine laughter requires mutual understanding. If only one side laughs, courtesy has been violated.

A 2024 American Psychological Association survey found that many respondents had family gatherings ruined by avoidable arguments. Gift-related disputes ranked among the top causes.

Alternative approaches exist that allow humor without harm. Private gestures, like sharing a meme one-on-one, express amusement while avoiding public humiliation.

Ultimately, choosing restraint models emotional maturity. It preserves both holiday harmony and personal integrity.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These users warned against ruining Christmas with intentional upset and drama

carolinemathildes − It’s not harmless fun. You’d be throwing Christmas under the bus just to get a laugh.

[Reddit User] − Giving a gift just to be mean isn’t funny, it’s cruel.

-Despair − Why ruin Christmas for no reason? YWBTA.

NachosFuerte − You’ll just create family tension for nothing.

karl-ism − You won’t change his mind, just be kind.

sheebaluv − It’s not that funny. Don’t ruin the holiday over a dumb joke.

Mochafrap512 − They already know he’s weird; pointing it out only causes chaos.

Redditors labeled it bullying or smug, comparing it to mocking beliefs

Dirigo72 − It’s bullying, not a prank. Making someone the butt of the joke isn’t funny.

thatonepersoniam − Publicly embarrassing someone to “teach science” helps no one.

AQualityKoalaTeacher − Giving a globe to a flat-earther is like gifting a Bible to mock an atheist. It’s smug ridicule.

Commenters called out the deliberate anger as unkind, especially to family

TheVue221 − He’s their idiot. Making someone mad on purpose at a family event isn’t kind.

Wristlockpick − Would you mock another person’s faith the same way? Of course YTA.

Users suggested alternatives or reinforced it’s not a true gift if meant to offend

mbbaer − Anything meant to upset isn’t a gift, it’s a paid insult.

[Reddit User] − Follow your friend’s idea instead. Christmas isn’t the time for mockery.

This Redditor admitted the hilarity but still voted against it

SefferWeffers − Technically YTA, but I’ll admit, it’s hilarious.

Ultimately, this Redditor’s decision to shelf the globe prank kept the holiday spirit intact, turning a potential explosion into quiet amusement. Would you have resisted the urge for that epic reaction, or snuck in a subtler nod to science?
