Sometimes the hardest secrets are the ones that begin with the best intentions.
For years, the OP had considered Mark one of his closest friends. They had known each other since high school and continued to work together, even after Mark got married. But watching Mark’s marriage fall apart changed the way OP saw him. Mark emotionally withdrew from his wife, Sarah, cheated repeatedly, and eventually told her he wanted a divorce so he could pursue another woman.
OP found himself caught in the middle. Sarah often reached out to him because she knew he was Mark’s friend, but she also knew he genuinely cared about what happened to their family. As her marriage collapsed, OP became one of the people she trusted.
Then one night, their friendship crossed a line neither of them expected.

From Comfort to Something More
Sarah had been through an awful period. Mark had not only abandoned the marriage, but according to OP, he repeatedly made her question whether she was responsible for his behavior.
Things became especially serious when Sarah attempted to take her own life. Even then, OP says Mark was with another woman that same night.
After the separation, OP continued checking on Sarah and trying to support her while she rebuilt her confidence. Their conversations gradually became more personal. One evening, the tone changed.
They started talking about relationships, past experiences, and things they had never tried. The conversation eventually became flirtatious, and what started as joking turned into a mutual decision to explore their attraction.
OP had work nearby and told Sarah he would be available if she wanted company. She agreed.
What followed was several days together in a hotel, and afterward, OP was left with an uncomfortable question: had he crossed an unforgivable line with his closest friend, or had Mark effectively destroyed that friendship long before anything happened?
The Real Problem Wasn’t Just Mark
OP clearly feels conflicted. Part of him believes Mark brought the situation upon himself. After all, Mark had cheated, neglected Sarah, and walked away from his marriage.
But another part of OP knows that sleeping with a close friend’s estranged wife is not exactly a simple situation.
There is also a child involved, which makes everything more complicated. Even if Mark and Sarah’s marriage is effectively over, their lives will remain connected because they share a young son.
The situation also raises another possibility. One Reddit commenter pointed out that OP’s extremely detailed explanation might suggest he has stronger feelings for Sarah than he realizes.
That may be the most important question here.
If this was simply a moment of mutual comfort, OP may eventually be able to leave it behind. But if the two of them genuinely connected, pretending it meant nothing could create an entirely different kind of problem.
What Psychology Says About Rebuilding After Betrayal
Psychologists often emphasize that recovering from betrayal involves rebuilding a person’s sense of safety, identity, and self-worth. The experience can leave someone questioning their judgment and wondering whether they were somehow responsible for another person’s behavior.
Relationship therapist Esther Perel has discussed how infidelity and relationship breakdown can profoundly affect a person’s sense of self, while also emphasizing that healing is not necessarily about returning to who someone was before the experience. Esther Perel’s official site
That perspective makes Sarah’s situation easier to understand. After being repeatedly rejected and betrayed, receiving genuine attention from someone she trusted could have felt incredibly meaningful.
But healing and starting a new relationship are not automatically the same thing.
OP may have helped Sarah feel wanted again, but both of them now need to decide whether what happened was simply part of a difficult chapter or the beginning of something they actually want to pursue.
And that decision should probably be made independently of Mark.

Several people essentially argued that Mark had abandoned the relationship long before OP became involved. Others questioned why OP remained friends with someone they considered so cruel.

Another commenter, however, offered the most interesting observation: OP seemed unusually invested in explaining Sarah’s suffering. Maybe, they suggested, he cared about her more deeply than he was admitting.

OP may have crossed a complicated boundary, but the bigger issue is what happens next.
Mark’s behavior does not automatically make every choice afterward consequence-free. At the same time, Sarah is no longer simply Mark’s neglected wife. She is a person trying to rebuild her life, and OP is someone who apparently became important to her during that process.
The secret could eventually explode their entire social circle. Or it could become the unexpected beginning of something neither of them planned.
Either way, OP probably has more to figure out than whether he betrayed Mark. He needs to decide what Sarah actually means to him now.
