Daughter Refused To Care For The Father Who Abandoned Her, Her Siblings Called Her Selfish

Family relationships are often built on more than biology. A shared last name or DNA connection does not automatically create trust, love, or a sense of belonging. Those things come from years of care, support, and showing up when someone needs you.

One woman found herself facing that painful reality when her siblings asked her to help care for their father after he became sick. The problem was that this was the same man who had rejected her from birth because she was not the child he wanted.

While her siblings believed she should step up because “he is still your father,” she saw the situation differently. To her, he was someone who had spent her entire childhood proving that being biologically related was not the same as being a parent.

A woman refused to care for the father who rejected her, leaving her siblings angry about her decision

'AITA for refusing to help my siblings care for their father (my bio father)?'

I'm the youngest and all three of us are full bio siblings.

But their father didn't want another girl and when I was born, he refused to raise me, so mom divorced him.

His parents were involved in my life until they passed and when I questioned if he was really my father,

they even did a DNA test on me and my grandparents to help prove it to me.

He had shared custody technically of all of us, but only took his time with them.

The courts never really did anything about him not taking me but taking them. We grew up with a strained dynamic because of it.

Now our mom is gone and he's sick. They want me to help them since "he's my dad too" but he's not.

He's biologically related to me but he never raised me, loved me, he even made a point of telling mom in front of me when I was younger

that he had his will drawn up so I would get nothing from him when he dies,

and he found a way around the backdated child support he owes for me still. He was so smug about it.

I told my siblings I would not help with THEIR father and that he didn't get to cut me off for being a girl and then expect me to care...

They said it would be helping them.

I said they never treated me as a real sister and were always quick to talk about what he did with them and how amazing he is around me,

when they knew how hard it was for me. I said as kids it's one thing but they were like that even as adults. They called me petty.

I told them they were expecting too much from someone who was not worthy of any kind of support

from the man who was supposed to love and support me as a child.

I also said they couldn't decide to suddenly treat me like I'm equal when they have made it clear for years that I'm not.

They called me an a__hole. They called me selfish. They told me I wasn't worth s__t.. AITA?

One of the most painful wounds a person can carry is not being hurt by a stranger, but by someone who was supposed to choose them without hesitation. A parent’s absence is not only measured by missed birthdays or empty rooms; it can shape how someone understands love, belonging, and their own value.

In this situation, the OP was not simply refusing to help a sick relative. She was confronting decades of rejection from the person who was expected to protect her first.

The emotional conflict in this story comes from the difference between biological connection and emotional responsibility. The OP’s siblings see their father through the relationship they experienced with him, while she experienced a completely different reality. For them, he was a parent who was present and meaningful.

For her, he was someone who actively chose not to fulfill that role because of her gender. That difference creates a painful divide that cannot be erased simply because everyone shares the same DNA.

The siblings may genuinely feel overwhelmed and believe they are asking for family support, but from the OP’s perspective, they are asking her to provide care for someone who denied her the basic care that creates a parent-child bond.

A useful perspective comes from attachment theory, which explains how early relationships with caregivers influence emotional security and future connections.

Psychologist Dr. Sue Johnson, founder of Emotionally Focused Therapy, explains that people are deeply affected by experiences of emotional abandonment and rejection, especially in close relationships where they expected safety and acceptance. She emphasizes that unresolved attachment injuries can continue to affect how people respond to later situations involving trust and vulnerability.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s refusal is not simply about resentment from childhood. Being asked to care for her father forces her to revisit the same painful message she received growing up: that she was less valued than her siblings.

While some may argue that forgiveness or compassion can be healing, forgiveness does not automatically require someone to provide emotional labor, physical care, or sacrifice for a person who caused lasting harm. The OP’s siblings may be focused on the present crisis, but the OP is also responding to a lifetime of experiences that shaped her relationship with him.

At the same time, this situation highlights how complicated family expectations can become when old wounds remain unresolved. The siblings are allowed to grieve their father’s illness and seek support, but they cannot demand a relationship that was never built. Shared genetics create a connection, but meaningful family bonds are created through actions, consistency, and care.

Ultimately, the OP’s decision is not only about whether she owes her father assistance. It is about recognizing that people cannot be expected to ignore years of rejection simply because circumstances have changed.

Compassion is valuable, but so are boundaries. Sometimes protecting yourself means accepting that a biological relationship may exist without the emotional foundation of a true parent-child relationship.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors supported OP and said biological ties do not create an obligation without love and care

[Reddit User] − NTA. They called me selfish. They told me I wasn't worth s__t.

Sure, because *that’s* how you convince someone who’s just gotten through complaining that you’ve never treated them like part of the family,

much less shown them actual love and compassion that they’re wrong. Put them all on mute and go about your life.

Fire_or_water_kai − They are wrong. NTA

fuliculifulicula − NTA. You didn't provide many details about your brothers relationship with you,

but even if they were understanding of your dynamic while you were all growing up and didn't flaunt their relationship with your father at that time,

it would still be wrong of them to expect you to be put trough this right now.

Blood conections aren't some magical bond that entitle people to have relationships, if that was the case, your father would have been there for you.

He had a legal responability as your father, he didn't comply. He had a moral obligation, he didn't care. You are doing absolutely nothing wrong.

I'm sorry he put you trough this, and I'm sorry your brothers are being selfish aswell. You are definitely not the a__hole here.

This group argued OP’s father abandoned her emotionally, so she does not owe him support now

judgingA-holes − NTA - And for all the reasons you stated. HE/THEY didn't love and support you.

Why shouldn't you treat them the same as they've treated you? Go NC with them as it seems you are almost there anyway.

You deserved better but at least your mom stood up for you and divorced his sorry ass for treating you like that.

WholeAd2742 − NTA. Considering he made the effort to disinherit you from his will and be an

AH enough to s__ew your mom out of past child support, doesn't sound like you owe him a damn thing.

Capelily − NTA. He refused to care for you. You have no obligation at all to care for him. Tell your sibs to pound sand.

These commenters encouraged OP to cut contact and move forward without guilt

[Reddit User] − NTA DNA does not equal family. Tell them to use all that child support he got out of with you to support him.

lipgloss_addict − You are not obligated to help or your father. Actually they made it easier for you to permanently block them and move on.

[Reddit User] − NTA. You don’t owe your father or your siblings one minute of your time.

All the insults they hurled at you perfectly describe your father, sister and brother.

INFO: Do you have a good relationship with your paternal grandparents? I suggest you inform them that their son has disinherited you.

Also inform them of the amount of back support that he weaseled out of paying.

Your grandparents can name you as their beneficiary to compensate for their son’s abandonment.

Other Reddit posters have experienced this. The will has to be written carefully to avoid being overturned in court.

This group advised OP to seek legal advice regarding unpaid child support and inheritance issues

Intrepid-Database-15 − NTA. But I would ask a lawyer about your dads will and the back childsupport he owes.

Your dads estate would have to pay the childsupport before any other debts, so I dont believe their a loophole for him. But you should talk to. Lawyer just incase.

[Reddit User] − Nope. You don’t owe your dad and your siblings a DAMN thing!

They treated you like nothing and that’s exactly what the Hell they should get from you—NOTHING!

They don’t deserve you. If anyone’s selfish and ain’t s__t, your siblings are it.

Do you think she was wrong for refusing to help her biological father, or was she protecting herself after years of rejection?
