Disabled Woman Shuts Down Cousin Who Says Having Kids Makes Her More “Adult”

People often assume adulthood follows one specific path. A certain job, a family, a mortgage, or a predictable routine are often treated as proof that someone has “grown up.” But life is rarely that simple.

OP has spent years navigating challenges that many people never see while still building an independent life. Despite dealing with a serious mental health condition, OP worked hard to create stability, support themselves, and find a career helping others.

During a conversation about disability and how society treats disabled adults, OP found themselves facing an unexpected opinion from someone close to them.

What started as a discussion about respect and independence quickly turned into a debate about who was actually taking responsibility in life. OP responded with a perspective that completely changed the direction of the conversation. Read on to see what happened next.

A disabled woman pushes back after her cousin dismisses her adulthood, turning the same logic back on her during an argument

not the actual photo

'After being infantilized for being disabled, I used her logic against her and made her cry'

I have a psychotic disorder and as a result life can be challenging but I managed to get a degree (after dropping out twice)

and I support myself by working with special needs kids.

I keep my expenses low so that if I need to take a break from working full time I can still support myself and I built up a lot of...

My cousin is my age and not disabled and she has a full time job, two kids and a husband.

At one point I was venting about something that happened at work and made a comment saying that it was unfair

to infantilize the disabled and even if I was not independent and was supported by SSI or my parents I would still be an adult.

She said something like “You’re still in a baby stage in life because you can take risks, I can’t because I have two kids to feed.”

I said “You’re in a place in life where you can take risks like deciding to have two kids, I can’t.

That doesn’t make you the baby and me the adult.”. She immediately threw a tantrum and changed the subject.

Sometimes the most painful judgments do not come from strangers. They come from people who believe they understand our lives but only see a small piece of the picture. In this story, the conflict was not really about who had more responsibilities. It was about the harmful idea that adulthood can be measured by one specific life path.

The OP was discussing something deeply personal: the experience of being treated as less capable because of a disability. Despite facing serious challenges, the OP built a career, completed a degree, became financially responsible, and created stability.

The cousin’s response shifted the conversation away from the actual issue and toward comparing their lives, as if having children and a traditional family automatically made one person more mature.

A different perspective is that the cousin may have been expressing her own exhaustion rather than intentionally trying to insult the OP. Raising two children and managing family responsibilities can be overwhelming, and some parents feel that their choices have limited their freedom.

However, feeling burdened does not mean other adults have fewer responsibilities or less life experience. Different circumstances create different challenges.

The conversation highlights an important psychological concept: the tendency to compare visible struggles while ignoring invisible ones.

People often recognize responsibilities that are socially familiar, such as parenting or working long hours, while overlooking challenges related to disability, mental health, or personal survival. This can create unfair assumptions about who is “ahead” in life.

Psychologist Dr. Kristin Neff, a researcher known for her work on self-compassion, explains that people often suffer when they measure their worth through harsh comparisons rather than recognizing their individual circumstances.

Her research suggests that self-compassion involves treating ourselves with understanding while acknowledging that everyone’s difficulties and journeys are different.

This perspective connects strongly to the OP’s response. The OP was not saying parenting is easy or that the cousin’s responsibilities do not matter.

The point was that adulthood is not a competition where one person’s struggles cancel out another person’s. Someone can have children and still struggle. Someone can have a disability and still be capable, responsible, and independent.

The cousin’s comment also reflects a common misunderstanding about disability. Needing support in certain areas does not erase someone’s adulthood.

Many adults rely on assistance, accommodations, or family support at different points in life. Independence is not simply about needing no help; it is about having agency, making decisions, and being respected as a person.

The OP’s response was powerful because it challenged the assumption directly. It turned the same logic around and showed how unfair the comparison sounded when applied from another angle.

The broader lesson is that maturity is not defined by marriage, children, income, health, or any single milestone. People grow through responsibility, resilience, and the way they handle the lives they have been given.

Respect begins when we stop ranking people’s struggles and start recognizing that different paths can still lead to equally valid forms of adulthood.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These Redditors praised OP for standing up and proving maturity is not defined by having kids

Aardonyx87 − Some people got to try to put others down to lift themselves up

Maleficent_Radio_674 − I hate how people who try to guilt trip you with

“well I have kids, I don’t have the same luxuries as you” forget that they *chose* to have those kids.

mommagoose4 − Good on you for stating truth! You are adulting just fine.

ramonashay − The fact that she threw a tantrum makes her the baby

Cgable63 − You are made of win.

AncientdaughterA − I’m damn proud of you 👏

JOA483 − You are creating safe nets so that you can take "risks" (vacations really), that's not acting like a baby 😶

These commenters rejected the idea that parenthood automatically equals adulthood and maturity

PrincessSarahHippo − Oh yes, the people who believe you aren't a real mature adult until you have kids. Sigh.

Before I hit my 20s I was mature enough to know I didn't want kids, so I shouldn't have them.

Early in my 20s I was diagnosed with a disease that can be hereditary. My mother also has a debilitating disease that has higher rates in families.

I am kind enough that I don't want to share my genetic burden. That was a mature decision.

Immature is having children when you shouldn't with people you shouldn't. Immature is judging people for their intelligent, intentional reproductive choices.

lilsmudge − When I was in college I met up with some old high school friends to reconnect.

Of the three of us, I was the only one still living at home because I had taken a gap year to sort out

what I wanted to do and then was commuting to school since I live about 20 minutes away from a massive university.

I also wasn’t in a relationship as I’m overwhelmingly not a s__ual or romantic person.

One of the others, “Cora” was going to an out of state school and the other “Christi”

had joined the military and had a super quick marriage to a guy for military benefits.

Christi was having a terrible time and her husband was a massive cheating a__hole and wasn’t sure what to do with herself now.

Cora was in a relationship with a guy who was threatening to leave her unless they had s__ but

she wasn’t sure if she was ready but was debating doing it anyway just to keep the guy.

I sort of gently encouraged both of them to leave their respective partners as they clearly had no respect for them as people.

Also f__k cheaters and s__ pests, you know?

Cue Cora dressing me down for a full ten minutes for thinking I understood their “adult” problems when I was still living at home and basically still a child.

Bruh, if those are adult problems than I’m happy to keep having childish ones.

Brightfoxy − First of all, you are doing great! Don't let anybody p__s on your parade. Your cousin sounds jealous of you.

As a childfree woman myself, I have been subjected to the self-righteousness and conceit of a few mothers in my life, too.

This covers up the fact that motherhood has been, at the very least, a disappointment for them.

If she couldn't take pushback and cried and threw a tantrum, that's on her for being a ❄️ Oh, and f*** anyone who tries to infantilize you!

Do you think adulthood is defined by traditional milestones like marriage and children, or by personal responsibility and self-growth? Have you ever been judged because your life path looked different from someone else’s? Share your thoughts below.
