Father Took A DNA Test After His Wife Claimed The Kids Were Only Hers, And The Truth Hurt

Parenthood can bring out intense emotions, but when one parent starts feeling like they must control every moment with their children, it can create serious tension inside a family. What begins as protectiveness can become something much harder when trust between partners starts breaking down.

The original poster (OP) has watched his wife become increasingly possessive of their three children after the birth of their youngest. Despite concerns from family members and repeated attempts to encourage her to seek help, she has refused, leaving OP feeling pushed away from both his marriage and his role as a father.

Read on to find out how Reddit responded to this complicated situation involving parenting, mental health concerns, and a relationship at a breaking point.

A father struggles as his wife becomes increasingly possessive of their children, leaving him questioning their marriage and future together

'My wife (31F) is so territorial of our children that I'm (32M) not sure our marriage can survive'

My wife (31F) and I (32M) have three children ages 3, 5 and 6. When our youngest was six months old my wife suddenly became very territorial of the children.

She would fight to stop me and even her mom (60F) from being with the kids without her present.

Her mom was our occasional sitter before this started and that stopped as soon as she became so territorial over them.

Along with her sister (40F) and brother (35M) we discussed our concerns about this with her but she told us she was just making sure she

knew where the kids were and she was tired of having a sitter and not being with our kids as much as possible.

She would not speak to a doctor. She told us she did not have PPD or PPA and she would not forgive us if we tried to make her sound...

There was a check done on her a little while after this and she walked out of her doctor appointment without completing it.

Our marriage became very strained after that appointment.

My wife told me I was acting like in generations past mother's weren't the sole caregivers for their children.

She said we could hang out all as a family but she didn't understand why I was trying to take the kids for myself.

Then when I ignored her and found time with the kids she would explode and she started calling them her kids and she accused me of taking HER kids without...

It made me question if she was acting this way because the kids weren't mine.

I asked her a couple of times why she said her kids when they're mine too and she told me it was because she had grown them in her body

and birthed them and that made them hers. Eventually I couldn't shake that concern so I did a DNA test with the kids and they're mine.

But the last two years have been nothing but fight after fight and her being unwilling to even consider help for herself.

Her mom tried to take her to a doctor but my wife wasn't willing.

She told us both even if we got her to a doctor she would refuse to let us into the actual appointment.

MIL is convinced this is something health related, either hormonal or mental health related. But as of now our hands are tied and I am miserable.

Every time I spend time alone with my kids my wife yells at me and curses at me for defying her and she does her best to restrict the time...

I spoke to a few attorneys about divorce and I know I would likely get 50/50 custody in a divorce.

But my wife would be considered high risk for withholding during my custody time and using parental alienation to keep me out of their lives.

We also are unlikely to force any kind of psychological evaluation based on what I have mentioned here and what I mentioned to my attorney.

She has not stopped all other parts of her life and has not run into any legal issues, which is generally when they are willing to order one.

So I feel somewhat trapped. I also feel guilty because I am doing this without telling my wife.

I still love my wife but that love has faded because she feels like a different person.

I don't know if I should try to fight for us another while longer or let it go

and pray this doesn't turn into a huge battle where she stops me seeing the kids and we're in and out of court over it.

The people we love can sometimes struggle in ways that change the entire shape of a family, and the hardest part is knowing when patience becomes self-sacrifice. The OP’s situation is painful because it is not a simple story of a failing marriage. It is a story about a father who wants to protect his relationship with his children while watching his partner become someone he barely recognizes.

The emotional conflict in this situation revolves around fear, control, and identity. The OP’s wife appears to have developed an intense need to remain physically connected to the children, eventually treating any separation as a threat rather than a normal part of parenting. From her perspective, she may believe she is protecting her children and fulfilling her role as a mother.

From the OP’s perspective, however, this behavior has transformed from attachment into exclusion. He is not asking to replace her role; he is asking to be recognized as an equally important parent. The repeated use of “my kids” instead of “our kids” seems to have created a deep emotional wound because it suggests he is being treated like an outsider in his own family.

A different perspective is that the wife’s behavior may not necessarily come from selfishness or a desire to harm the OP. Extreme protectiveness after childbirth can sometimes be connected to anxiety, trauma, hormonal changes, or an overwhelming fear of losing control.

The concerning part is not that she wants to be involved with her children. Most parents experience strong attachment. The concern is when that attachment prevents another loving parent from participating and creates constant conflict within the family.

Mental health professionals recognize that postpartum-related conditions can sometimes continue beyond the period immediately after birth.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), postpartum depression and anxiety can affect bonding, emotions, and daily functioning, and symptoms may require professional support rather than simply waiting for them to disappear.

This perspective does not mean the OP’s wife definitely has a specific condition. It means the sudden personality change, refusal to seek help, and extreme fear around separation deserve attention. The OP’s frustration comes from feeling powerless: he cannot force his wife to accept support, but he is also watching his relationship with his children become restricted.

The challenge is that the solution cannot only focus on proving who is right. The family needs stability. If the wife refuses individual help, the OP may need to focus on what he can control: maintaining consistent involvement with the children, documenting important interactions, seeking professional guidance, and approaching difficult conversations in a way that emphasizes concern rather than accusation.

The heartbreaking part of this story is that both parents appear to love their children deeply. The conflict is not about whether the children matter. It is about whether love can exist without fear controlling the relationship.

A healthy family does not require one parent to disappear so another can feel secure. Children benefit from having multiple safe, loving adults in their lives. The goal should not be winning custody or proving blame; it should be creating an environment where the children can have strong relationships with both parents while their mother receives the support she may need.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors expressed concern about possible mental health issues and urged OP to prioritize the children’s safety

plastic_venus − She’s not mentally well but your priority has to be what’s best for your children

and watching this dynamic is absolutely not good for your children

JonCocktoastin − This sounds like serious mental illness. Are you sure your wife isn’t capable of doing something really really bad?

Brilliant-Object-467 − Well as a retired psychologist, my fear would be she might try to do something to the kids if you get custody of them!

You would need her to have supervised visits only. .this started after the last baby, it could be a bad case of PPD…

Have you talked to her ob-GYN doctor alone?

She really shouldn’t be alone with these kids, if the OB physician can help you have him recommend a psychiatrist.

TheGreenPangolin − You can't force a psych eval during the divorce, but could CPS force one now without divorce?

How is school/preschool happening? Is she paranoid about teachers as well?

The school might be able to push something if they know what is happening. You need to start recording her behaviour for evidence.

These users encouraged OP to consider divorce because the current family dynamic may harm the children

StarMagus − If you stay with her you are teaching your kids that this is normal and how their future adult relationships should look like. Do with that what you...

oldandopinionated − I think you're at the point where you need to think realistically about you and your children's future.

Are the children going to school? How is she going to cope with that? Will the children be allowed to have friends? Or visit friends houses?

What about sleepovers, school camps, and all of the other parts of normal childhood experiences?

I can see that if you talk with her about the reality of divorce and shared custody she could not only be a flight risk

she could also be pushed into a mental health episode. I feel like you're heading this way though.

There is no point continuing the marriage with someone who not only does not trust you with the children

but she is actively trying to keep you from developing relationships with them.

Until you're ready though continue taking the children for outings, its healthy for them. Stretch them out for as long as you can.

Push back on your wife that they are your children too and you have every right to take them out. Organise an overnight trip if you can.

Let her know this is non negotiable and she has to accept it. Enlist help with any relatives you can so that she understands she's being unreasonable.

Especially when you come home with the kids so its hard for her to be angry. I think you're in for a hard time and I'm sorry for you and...

This is so unfair for you all. Hopefully she will realise that she can either give a little or risk losing all.

Mostly I'm scared of how far she's willing to push to get her own way and what she's willing to do. Good luck

Onasiz − I don’t know if blindsiding her would be the move here, I’d be worried it’d send her on a spiral.

Have you discussed the possibility of divorce with her if she doesn’t get help?

These Redditors suggested professional help, including therapy or medical support, before the situation worsens

FeministPossum − Would she consider couples therapy?

I absolutely agree that it sounds like PPD/PPA, but if she won’t get solo treatment, maybe couples therapy could be a bridge.

Born-Bid8892 − Are your 5 and 6 year old able to articulate how this feels for them?

How does she respond to the children wanting time with other people?

Brilliant-Object-467 − Could your MIL stay with her during the day if you file for divorce, at least for awhile.

I’m fearful of she might try and hurt the kids to keep you from them!

Should he offer one final condition of professional help, or has two years of refusal already supplied the answer? How can he protect the children without needlessly escalating their mother’s fears?
