He Meant to Text the Right Dave, but Accidentally Sent Another Man Into a Marriage Panic

Sometimes a harmless favor can go spectacularly wrong with just one badly worded text.

The poster was enjoying a relaxed neighborhood pool day at his friend Mike’s house when a woman walking her dog stopped by to say hello. She was invited to join the gathering, accepted a glass of wine, and quickly found herself staying much longer than she had planned.

Eventually, she realized her husband might wonder where she was. Since she didn’t have her phone with her, she asked the poster to send him a quick message explaining that she had stopped at Mike’s house for a drink.

It sounded simple enough.

It wasn’t.

The poster pulled out his phone, found a contact named Dave, and sent a seemingly innocent message: “Hey FYI your wife is over at Mike’s house having some wine.”

Then he jumped back into the pool.

Unfortunately, he had texted the wrong Dave.

He Meant to Text the Right Dave, but Accidentally Sent Another Man Into a Marriage Panic

'TIFU by accidentally texting a friend that his wife was cheating on him?'

I live in a nice neighborhood where a bunch of us are friendly with each other.

One of my neighbors, Mike, has a pool, and today he invited me and a few other neighbors over for a little pool day. Music, beer, wine, pool floats. Everything...

At one point, another neighbor was walking her dog past Mike’s house. His pool is mostly behind the house, but you can see part of it from the street, so...

She waved back, and we invited her to come join us. She said sure, came through the gate, and pretty soon someone had handed her a glass of wine.

About ten minutes later she realized her husband Dave might be worried that she was taking so long to return, as her dog walk was becoming an extended expedition. She...

Can you just text Dave real quick and tell him I stopped at Mike’s for a glass of wine?”. “Sure.”. So I pulled out my phone and texted Dave:. **“Hey...

Then I put my phone down, jumped into the pool, climbed onto a floatie chair, and spent the next hour drinking beers and enjoying my afternoon. Eventually I got out...

I had texted a completely different Dave in my contacts with a very similar last name. Think “Dave Smith” versus “Dave Smithers.”.

And unfortunately, Wrong Dave apparently knew several people named Mike.. Even more unfortunately, his wife was also out of the house running errands at that exact moment.

And *even more unfortunately than that*, Wrong Dave apparently already had some concerns about how friendly his wife might be with one particular Mike.

So while I had been peacefully floating around drinking beer, this man had been experiencing the worst hour of his marriage..

Wrong Dave's texts went something like:. **“WTF? She said she was going to Walmart and the library.”**. **“How do you know? Thanks though.”**. A few minutes later:. **“I called her...

Then: **“She called me back and is claiming she’s at Walmart. Can you see her with Mike? Can you take a picture and send it to me?”**. Then:. **“I KNEW...

I had also received a text from Wrong Dave’s Wife:. **“Why the f__k are you making up s__t about me?!”**. I stared at the screen for a few seconds as...

I texted the wrong Dave by mistake. Meant to text Dave Smithers. Sorry for the confusion.”**

At that point I decided the most responsible course of action was to grab two beers, get back in the pool, and try to avoid the universe for a while.

When I finally checked again later, there was about a 45-minute gap in the conversation Then one final message from Wrong Dave:. **“You have no idea how much s__t you...

For what it’s worth, Correct Dave apparently never even noticed that his wife’s dog walk had taken longer than usual.

**TL;DR:** Neighbor asked me to text her husband that she had stopped at Mike’s house for a glass of wine. I texted the wrong husband, who apparently already suspected his...

One innocent text creates a very serious problem

The Dave who received the message was not the woman’s husband. He was another neighbor with a remarkably similar last name.

At first, the mistake might have been harmless. Except Wrong Dave apparently already had suspicions about his own wife.

His wife was also away from home at the time, supposedly running errands. Worse, there happened to be several people named Mike in their social circle, including one man Wrong Dave apparently already suspected might be getting too friendly with his wife.

So while the poster was floating peacefully in a pool, drinking beer and enjoying the afternoon, Wrong Dave was apparently having the worst hour of his marriage.

The messages started coming in.

He asked why his wife was at Mike’s house when she had told him she was going to Walmart and the library. Then he said he had called her, but she hadn’t answered.

Soon, he asked the poster whether he could actually see her with Mike and take a picture.

Then came the inevitable realization: “I KNEW IT ALL ALONG.”

The situation became even more chaotic when Wrong Dave’s wife contacted the poster herself, demanding to know why he was making things up about her.

That was when the poster finally checked his phone and realized what he had done.

His stomach probably dropped through the bottom of the pool.

The correction came far too late

He immediately explained that he had accidentally texted the wrong Dave and had actually meant to contact the woman’s husband.

But the damage had already been done.

There was then a roughly 45-minute silence before Wrong Dave sent one final message: “You have no idea how much s__t you have caused.”

The irony was almost painful.

The woman had simply stopped for a glass of wine. Her actual husband apparently never even noticed that her dog walk had lasted longer than expected.

Meanwhile, a completely unrelated man had spent an hour wondering whether his marriage was falling apart.

The poster admitted that his original message probably could have been worded much better. Something like, “Your wife asked me to let you know she’s at Mike’s having a drink,” would have made the situation much harder to misinterpret.

Instead, “your wife is over at Mike’s” sounded suspiciously like a warning from someone who had just witnessed something they weren’t supposed to see.

Why the mistake hit so hard

Relationship therapist Esther Perel has written extensively about how jealousy and suspicion can cause people to interpret ambiguous information through an existing emotional story. In her work on infidelity and relationships, she emphasizes that betrayal is not only about what happened, but also about the meaning people assign to what they believe happened. Esther Perel’s official website

That seems particularly relevant here. The text itself was ambiguous, but Wrong Dave apparently already had doubts about his wife’s relationship with another man. The message didn’t create those doubts from nothing. It simply landed directly on an existing insecurity.

That’s also why many commenters felt the accidental text probably wasn’t the real problem. If a marriage is secure, a strange message from a neighbor is usually met with confusion and a quick clarification. Wrong Dave instead immediately connected the message to fears he apparently already carried.

The poster absolutely made a mistake, especially by disappearing into the pool immediately afterward. But he didn’t knowingly accuse anyone of cheating. He was trying to help a neighbor and accidentally sent the message to the wrong person.

Reddit had plenty to say about the disaster.

Some commenters pointed out that the wording was unnecessarily suspicious and suggested the poster should have let the woman use his phone or clearly identified that she had asked him to send the message.

Others thought Wrong Dave’s reaction revealed much bigger problems. If one random text from a neighbor could immediately convince him that his wife was cheating, there were probably already serious trust issues in that marriage.

One commenter summed up the situation with a brutal observation: if the relationship had been healthy, Wrong Dave’s response would probably have been something closer to, “Uh, wrong person?”

And then there was the obvious Reddit joke: at least now Wrong Dave’s wife couldn’t secretly meet the mysterious Mike at Walmart.

Here's the comments of Reddit users:

Idainaru_Yokubo − you did mess up, but honestly this pair seems they already had existing issues

Pame_in_reddit − Mmm, your wording wasn’t the best. “FYI, your wife wanted me to tell you that she’s at Mike’s” would have been better. But Dave Smith jumped the gun...

Shadow_Hound_117 − **“Hey FYI your wife is over at Mike’s house having some wine. ”**

Next time either let her use your phone to make a quick call, or send something that can't be misunderstood so easily like **"Hey your wife stopped by the party...

Whole_Guarantee_5599 − WTF with the wording of the first msg. "Can you tell my husband that I had a flat tire in front of the hospital. Should be late for...

etanimod − That's actually hilarious (and unfortunate) On the bright side, if their relationship was healthy, this probably would've had no impact. If one of my friends texted me my...

sog96 − Good job, now wrong Dave’s wife cannot go to Walmart to hook up with wrong Mike. Sigh.

Tall_Wonder_913 − Why did you choose such potentially problematic wording? Obviously Incorrect Dave and his wife already had issues but damn dude,

the way you worded it and then dropped off the conversation would be enough to make anyone feel some type of way. . be more thoughtful in the future

mephisti25 − **“You have no idea how much s__t you have caused. ”** GTFOH. If Wrong Dave and his wife had their s__t together his response should have been: "wat?...

JoseSaldana6512 − Dave's not here man

Enragedocelot − Incredible. Sounds like that relationship needs some work

Final Thoughts

The poster definitely learned an important lesson about texting. When you’re sending a message about someone’s spouse, especially someone else’s spouse, precision matters.

Still, the accidental text didn’t magically create an unhappy marriage. It exposed whatever uncertainty was already sitting underneath it.

The poster’s biggest mistake was the wording. Wrong Dave’s biggest problem may have existed long before that afternoon.

And somewhere in the middle of all this chaos, the original husband was apparently still waiting for his wife to finish her dog walk.

Sometimes you really can cause a relationship crisis with three sentences and one wrong contact.
