He Trained the New Guy From Scratch, But One Argument Turned Into a Workplace Disaster

in Social Issues

Having years of experience in a field does not always prevent conflict at work.

Sometimes, the hardest challenge is dealing with someone who refuses to accept their role or responsibilities.

The original poster (OP) had built his career around designing plastic products and was brought into a company specifically for his knowledge.

After moving into a higher position, he took on the responsibility of training a new employee.

At first, everything seemed manageable, but repeated errors and disagreements about who was responsible eventually created tension between them.

When another mistake caused frustration to boil over, OP said something harsh that resulted in consequences at work.

Read on to discover what happened and how people reacted to his side of the story.

Veteran designer clashes with a younger coworker after repeated mistakes lead to a heated workplace confrontation

'I trained a teenager who then thought he could boss me around?'

Years ago I worked at a plastic manufacturing company. They started out

selling items that they bought from China and eventually got into actually

designing and manufacturing the products that they were once selling

allowing them to have a higher profit margin. Not a bad business plan but

still required a lot of designing. That's where I came in. I had experience in

working with plastic before I got hired and in fact that was the reason why

they brought me on board.

About 6 months into working there, I was promoted to Chief designer but

before I took that position, I had to train a new guy who came over from

working at a local funeral home who thought, hey this might be fun. He

was about 18 years old at the time and was a go-getter and a bit of a hot

head. I taught him everything he needed to know about the CNC and laser

cutters, how to run the program, how to set the products in the design

field to maximize cuts, everything.

One day I had designed a very intricate product and gave extensive details

in a PDF on how to cut, trim, bend, and glue the parts together. This young

guy's job was only to cut the parts to the specifications I gave him - and he

constantly messed up on this product.

One day after an especially hard and fast working day, he came in and said

that the manager was yelling at him because every piece of the product

that he cut, totaling 40 units, had been cut wrong. I double checked my

files, saw that everything was correct, and showed him the cut file that he

should have been using that I sent to him three times. I told him in the

nicest way possible, just do your job and cut the files that I send you.

He had the audacity to try to yell at me and say, I will cut the files if they

are correct. You need to do your job and make sure that I have the right

measurements. I lost it.

Before I could stop myself I blurted out to him, look dude, I've been

working since before you were sucking at your mom's tit, so don't you dare

effing tell me how to do my job. Now get your sorry b__t back out there

and cut the damn files I send you.

Of course, he went complaining to the manager about a hostile work

environment and I got the reprimand. It was okay though. I left the

company about a month later because I couldn't handle the constant back

talk from someone who was younger than my son.

Many workplace conflicts are not really about the mistake itself.

They are often about feeling disrespected, unheard, or unappreciated after someone has invested years building their knowledge and reputation.

When people feel their experience is being questioned, even a small disagreement can quickly become an emotional battle.

In this situation, the OP was not simply angry about incorrect cuts or a production error.

He had spent years developing expertise in plastic manufacturing and was trusted enough to become the chief designer.

He had trained the younger employee, provided detailed instructions, and believed the problem came from failing to follow those instructions.

From his perspective, the frustration came from feeling that his professional knowledge was being challenged by someone who had not yet gained the same experience.

However, the moment he responded with a personal insult, the conflict shifted from a technical disagreement into a workplace behavior issue.

A different perspective is that both employees may have been protecting their sense of competence.

The younger worker likely felt blamed for repeated mistakes and reacted defensively, while the OP felt his authority and experience were being dismissed.

In many workplaces, especially when there is a large age or experience gap, people can unintentionally confuse “respect for experience” with “authority over others.”

Being skilled does not always guarantee that others will accept criticism easily, and being new does not mean someone’s concerns should automatically be ignored.

This insight shows why the situation escalated so quickly.

The OP may have had valid reasons to be frustrated, but the emotional response created a new problem separate from the original mistake.

A manager hearing that an employee was insulted would likely focus less on who was correct about the design file and more on whether the workplace remained respectful.

At the same time, the younger employee also had a responsibility to accept guidance and verify instructions before blaming someone else for errors.

The situation highlights a common workplace lesson: expertise earns respect, but communication determines whether that respect lasts.

The OP’s knowledge and frustration were understandable, yet the way the message was delivered weakened his position.

A better outcome might have come from documenting the mistake, reviewing the process together, and allowing the evidence to speak instead of letting frustration take control.

Experience is valuable, but the ability to handle conflict professionally is what turns experience into true leadership.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters criticized OP’s reaction

Disastrous-Summer619 − The irony is he would've learned a lot more if he'd

listened instead of trying to prove himself.

Puzzled_Ocelot1537 − So you were in the right and you even had proof, but

because of the way you conducted yourself, you were still the one to get

reprimanded? I feel like this is something to think about.

brett49703 − Why couldn’t you just go to the floor and find out what the

problem was? Maybe there was issues you didn’t anticipate or you could

have shown him how to improve. Instead, it was “How dare you question me! ”

These users emphasized the value of experience

WonderfulMaybe6787 − Cause the dude former job was in the funeral

home he has zero customer complaints just saying

PrimaryRecord5 − Don’t get me started with new hire engineers at

manufacturing site. They truly believe they’re gods gift and we are all lost

until they showed up

Electrical-Apple-631 − I worked 33 years in a hospital in NW Pennsylvania

that “merged” (bought for $150 million) with an insurance company owned

major hospital in SW Pennsylvania (if you live in PA you know who I mean). I

worked with the transition team for a year as they were bringing in their

own medical supplies and computer system.

They went live in April and in June I was terminated. The guy who fired me

wasn’t even born when I first started there. My last words to him: “I’ve got

socks older than you. ”

This group questioned the company’s management decisions

fvives − So repeated mistakes from this kid didn’t warrant a PIP and getting

sacked? Makes no sense….

Knever − Did HR do nothing when you told them of his insubordination?

These commenters shared workplace stories about feeling dismissed or undervalued by younger leaders

hoosiergirl1962 − I said something similar to one of the owners of a

company I used to work for. He co-owned with his dad and he was in his

early 30s and managed things how he was taught in business school. I had a

long talk with him one day asking if we could all get a raise since we hadn't

had one for about 3 years.

He started in with a speech about how if we wanted raises we should come

into the office individually and tell him how we thought we could "grow the

company". Mind you, we were all line workers in a factory, more or less.

I don't remember exactly what prompted me to it, but I ended up saying to

him "I was out in the working world full-time before you were even born".

ms_saint − I once left a fast-paced packing job because my supervisor was

an 18 year old who could barely grow a mustache constantly riding me to

be perfect.   S__t's humiliating.

The OP’s workplace conflict started with a technical mistake but quickly turned into a clash of experience, responsibility, and communication styles.

While the younger employee’s repeated errors understandably caused frustration, the harsh comment crossed a professional line and shifted the focus away from the original issue.

Some readers may sympathize with the OP’s frustration after training someone who ignored instructions, while others may argue that a leader should handle conflict with more patience.
