in Social Issues

Some betrayals never fully disappear, even when a couple chooses to stay together.

Years later, one unexpected event can reopen every wound and force both people to confront feelings they thought had been buried.

One woman faced that after learning that her husband’s former affair partner had died.

The affair had lasted more than a year, and at the time her husband had said he loved the other woman deeply and wanted to leave the marriage for her.

Although the affair eventually ended and the couple stayed together, his grief after her death made it clear those feelings had never fully vanished.

He wanted to attend the vigil and funeral, reached out to her family, and became increasingly withdrawn.

Scroll down to see why one final gesture convinced his wife that their 25-year marriage was truly over.

A wife struggles as her husband openly grieves the woman he once planned to leave her for

not the actual photo

'My husband is mourning his affair partner?'

My (F50) husband (M52) is mourning his affair partner (F45).

We’ve been married for 25 years and have 2 adult children. The affair was 3

years ago and lasted 1.5 years. During his affair, he said that she was the

one he could not live without, loved the most, and that he wanted to leave

me for her. The affair only ended because she wanted it, and he was heartbroken.

He eventually confessed. I chose to stay for various reasons. At first, I

blamed her and thought of her as a homewrecker, but somewhere along the way, I realized that it was him.

Three days ago, it was found that she passed away due to unfortunate

circumstances. Although I personally disliked her, she was liked by many in the community.

There will be a vigil held for her, where people talk about what an amazing

woman she was and how she made everyone around her better. My

husband wants to go. He has become more withdrawn over these past

couple of days. He admits that he is sad and grieving her.

He reached out to her brother, and introduced himself to him as her friend.

He wants to attend the funeral and pay his respects.

I don’t want him to. I want him to forget about her and to hate her. But he does not. I feel like a monster saying this.

UPDATE:

The vigil happened two days ago. My husband and I both went. Everything

that I expected to happen, happened. Everyone spoke about how she was

the brightest light and that nothing would be the same without her. Her

family spoke about what an amazing daughter and sister she was, her

friends talked about what a delightful friend she was. My husband or I did not speak.

I saw the comments saying that I should say something at the vigil. I chose

not to. Not because I think she’s a great woman, but because I do not think

her mourning friends or family need to hear that when they are grieving.

My husband did not speak. Not out of respect for me, but respect for her,

as he realized that she cut him off and wanted nothing to do with him.

After the vigil, I told him that I wanted a divorce. He did not protest it and said that he thinks that it will be for the best.

He ordered a heart shaped necklace with her name engraved inside it, and that’s when I knew it was truly over.

I told the kids about the divorce today. We both chose not to reveal the

affair to them, as we don’t want them to feel like the way need to take

sides to show loyalty or anything like that. They are still processing.

I don’t think I ever want to date or fall in love again. If I’m honest, I do think

his affair partner was the true love of his life, and I believe he regrets meeting me.

So, I will choose myself. I’m trying to find a job right now and figure out how to rebuild my life.

I am still angry at her and wish she never came into my life, but I will work

on forgiving her and him for my sake. I’m still jealous of her and think of her

everyday and how my soon to be ex husband called her the love of his life.

I saw another comment saying that I should make fun of her death in front

of my husband. I find that a tad bit cruel, and while I think ill of her, I try not to vocalize it.

Sometimes the deepest heartbreak is not discovering that someone loved another person.

It is realizing that part of them may never have fully returned.

The OP already survived the original affair three years ago, chose to remain married, and tried to rebuild a life after learning that her husband had once described another woman as the person he could not live without.

Now that woman’s death has reopened a wound that was never entirely closed.

Emotionally, the situation contains several kinds of grief at once. Her husband is mourning someone he once loved intensely.

The OP, meanwhile, is grieving the marriage she thought she had repaired, because his reaction suggests that the affair still carried enormous emotional significance.

Her jealousy does not make her cruel. She is watching her husband mourn the woman who once represented the greatest threat to their marriage, while also hearing everyone else describe that woman as extraordinary.

There is another perspective that makes her eventual decision understandable.

The real turning point may not have been the vigil itself. It was the necklace.

Attending a public memorial could be explained as closure. Quietly grieving could be human.

But ordering a heart-shaped necklace engraved with the affair partner’s name communicated an ongoing attachment that the OP could no longer reinterpret as something safely buried in the past.

At that point, staying may have required her to continually compete with a memory.

The affair was technically over, but the emotional meaning of it was apparently still alive.

His grief is not inherently wrong; people do not control every attachment they carry.

Yet the OP is equally entitled to recognize that she cannot continue living inside a marriage where she feels emotionally second to someone who is no longer even present.

Her choice to avoid attacking the deceased woman publicly also shows something important.

She is separating anger from cruelty. She does not have to admire the affair partner, forgive immediately, or pretend the betrayal caused no damage.

Choosing divorce, then, does not necessarily mean she failed to forgive. It may mean she finally stopped asking herself to survive the same injury indefinitely.

Rebuilding her independence, finding work, protecting her relationship with her children, and allowing herself to grieve without competing with anyone may be the first real steps toward choosing herself.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters said the current pain is a consequence of choosing to stay after the affair and its unresolved damage

km4098 − This is the price you pay for staying and forgiving I guess.

No_Handle_8067 − You’re not a monster. This is the price you are paying

for staying. You can understand that he’s grieving while still being hurt by

it. The affair was his choice, and so is how he handles her death.

You can’t force him to hate her, but you absolutely can tell him how painful

this is for you and decide what you need from him now or just leave him.

Edit- The fact that he is doing this and making you feel this way surely tells

something. The damage he did is too much for your marriage to be right again.

Theatregeeke − Girl, this is what happens when you choose to “forgive. ”

You will always play second to her. Think about if you can live with that.

break_cycle_speed − Unfortunately now that she’s dead, she’s slipped into

a place of martyrdom in his mind. She now has no flaws that he will ever

see. She cannot make a mistake that will change his mind.

Every flaw she ever had will fade into nothing for him and he will continue

to withdraw from you as he puts her higher and higher on a pedestal in his

head. He didn’t want to stay with you and he didn’t choose to end the affair. This is the result of choosing to stay.

If you can’t handle that, I would think the next step is obvious.

These Redditors emphasized that his long-term affair and admission of loving her showed he never fully moved on

Plumbus-Grab-816 − I mean he told you she was the love of his life, I'm not sure what you were expecting by staying.

emmkat24 − As much as this is horrid to say, she is his one that got away. A

1.5 long affair is significant, even in terms of dating and being single. You

chose to stay. You chose to ignore it. Now you have to deal with that fallout. This is part of that fallout.

karenna89 − I’m sorry, this must be awful and reopen some wounds. It

sounds like your husband never really moved on. You tried to make it work,

but is this something you want for the rest of your life? Someone who

openly admits he loves another woman and doesn’t even care enough to pretend.

I can acknowledge there are reasons to stay, but he doesn’t even seem to be doing the bare minimum.

These commenters urged her to leave the marriage rather than continue living in the shadow of his former affair partner

dimiteddy − I want him to forget about her and to hate her. But he does

not. It's counter-productive to compete with a dead woman. There will be

another one as obviously you're not enough for him. If you can afford it financially leave him.

IcyStage0 − I’m sorry. You need to leave him.

despicable-coffin − You’re second (at least). You will always be. He will

always mourn her. There’s no chance for her to become a terrible person to

him now that she’s dead. You’re not a terrible person for having these

thoughts or feeling this way. How much longer are you going to allow him to make you feel like this?

You’re choosing to stay with him so you’re choosing all of this. S__t. He

could end up leaving you bc he’s so heartbroken. Think hard on this.

itsjustmejttp123 − Why tf are you continuing to stay with such a piece of

s__t? You are a place holder till he finds something better. Please have some self respect and tell him to GTFO

This commenter shared a personal experience of confronting an affair partner at a funeral and feeling deeply hurt when her partner prioritized the other woman’s feelings

_teeney_ − You’re not a monster. My ex cheated on me for the first 1.5-2

years of our relationship. We worked through it and stayed together for

another 5 years. A few years later, my ex’s affair partner’s father (also his

boss at the time) suddenly passed away and of course we had to go to the

funeral. The affair partner was there, crying and grieving.

I had to see her, speak to her and she gave me a very long hug. It was very hard and hurtful to go through that.

We broke up a few years later due to other issues, but thinking about my

decision to stay and the effort it took to “get over” the feelings of being

cheated on / having to see the affair partner makes me hate myself for

staying. I told him that he couldn’t talk to her or hug her at the funeral.

He was upset by this, telling me I lacked empathy, and went on to say that

he will absolutely talk to her and if she wanted a hug, would give her a hug.

She was at the funeral with her new boyfriend and her interactions with my

ex were very curt, there was no hugging between them.

It’s funny how she had the decency to be respectful towards her boyfriend,

yet my partner at the time completely discounted my feelings. Only you

can decide what to do. Although the thought of losing someone you love is

hurtful (I. e. leaving your husband), it tends to be more hurtful to have to

stuff your emotions down over time and pretend like you’re not hurting because of his behavior. You deserve much better than this.

The vigil did not create the end of this marriage. It simply made impossible to ignore what had never truly healed.

His grief, the necklace, and his continued attachment showed that part of him had remained emotionally tied to the affair long after it ended.

Choosing divorce was not about competing with a dead woman; it was about finally refusing to live in that shadow.

Do you think she made the right decision by leaving, or could this marriage still have survived after everything that happened?
