Summary:

  • Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union open to Bring It On sequel, if script meets standards.
  • Director Peyton Reed enthusiastic about exploring cheerleading themes across generations.
  • Original film’s positive portrayal of teamwork and empowerment still resonates with fans, sparking hopes for a sequel.

Get ready to hear “Woo-hoo!” again! Stars Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union have both hinted at their openness to a sequel of the 2000 teen comedy cult classic, Bring It On.

Dunst, who played the spirited Torrance Shipman, recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight. While acknowledging it depends on the script, she admitted, “Everyone’s bringing back their stuff, right? It’s a throwback time.” However, there’s one key condition: “as long as it’s not embarrassing.”

Union, who portrayed the fierce Isis, captain of the rival Clovers squad, also hasn’t shut down the idea. In a separate interview, she playfully told Business Insider, “Who knows? We may have something cooking, you know?”

Adding fuel to the fire, Bring It On’s director Peyton Reed previously expressed his enthusiasm for a sequel. He discussed the possibility with screenwriter Jessica Bendinger, envisioning a “20-years-later” concept that explores the themes of cheerleading across generations.

The original Bring It On, released in 2000, captured the hearts of audiences with its fun and competitive world of cheerleading. Dunst’s portrayal of the determined Torrance, alongside Eliza Dushku‘s Missy and Jesse Bradford’s Cliff, created a memorable cast. Gabrielle Union‘s Isis added depth and a healthy dose of rivalry to the story.

The film’s success went beyond the box office gross of over $80 million worldwide. It became a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its positive portrayal of female teamwork, perseverance, and empowerment. While several direct-to-video sequels followed, none recaptured the magic of the original. There was even a stage adaptation, Bring It On: The Musical, featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, which garnered critical acclaim.

With both Dunst and Union expressing interest, and director Reed having a potential storyline in mind, a Bring It On sequel could become a reality. Fans eager to see a return of the Toros and the Clovers in a funny and heartwarming story will have to wait and see if this nostalgic project comes to fruition.
