Man Offers a Former Flight Attendant $200 Weekly for Round-the-Clock Elder Care, Then Acts Insulted

Some job offers are not opportunities at all.

They are unreasonable demands dressed up with friendly language, usually aimed at someone the caller assumes will be too polite or financially desperate to refuse.

One person received an unexpected call from an acquaintance they had not spoken to in five years.

After a little small talk about work and the difficult job market, the caller described plans to spend the summer between two valuable homes.

Then came the real reason for reconnecting: they needed someone to provide round-the-clock care for an elderly relative for three straight months.

The position included no days off, no air conditioning, and compensation of only $200 per week.

When the poster declined, the acquaintance seemed genuinely offended.

Scroll down to see why this so-called offer became even more insulting.

Old acquaintance offers a struggling friend a low-paying caregiving job

not the actual photo

'Oh, My Rich Friends. We can't be friends anymore.?'

So, tonight, an acquaintance I haven't spoken to in at least 5 years calls me.

"Marcus", I'll call him. Marcus did make a little chit chat, then they ask me

what I'm doing for work. I say I am between full time stuff right now, but

looking.

They agree that the job market is hard, and how they are divesting

themselves of a business that they've had for decades as 'the suckers aren't

buying anything anymore.' I give a little laugh, because that's a weird way

to refer to clients, but maybe Marcus is a little down.

They then mention about their home in New England, and their home in

the west coast in a 'highly desirable area on the beach' that they want to

split the entire summer between the two locations because it's so hot in

the south in the summer. I say something along the lines of "That's a heck

of a problem to have" and we laugh again. That's when they drop their

entitled request on me. The want someone to care for their extremely

obese, nearly bed bound elderly auntie that lives with them. 7 days a week,

no days off, for 3 months.

The best part? This home is not air conditioned. They want to offer a fellow

human $200.00 per week since it's 'light duty', but, they say I'd have my

own room.. (I own a home, so that isn't of interest to me.)

I explained that I was going to have to pass on this amazing offer, and

Marcus got really insulted. He whined and said they didn't know anyone as

nice as me, and since I was a flight attendant before this, I know "the first

aid and serving food stuff". Again, I declined and he was confused. I said "

Would you work for $200.00 a week? Because I won't."

He said he would call in a week to see if I changed my mind. Blocked him as

soon as the call ended.

Sometimes an offer sounds insulting because it reveals how little someone values another person’s time.

Being temporarily unemployed does not make a person available for exhausting labor, nor does past kindness create an obligation to accept exploitation disguised as friendship.

Marcus was not offering the OP a modest summer job.

He was asking one person to provide continuous care for an elderly, nearly bedbound woman seven days a week for three months, without scheduled rest, in a house without air conditioning.

The proposed pay was $200 per week (less than $29 per day) while Marcus divided his summer between two desirable properties.

His description of the work as “light duty” minimized both the aunt’s needs and the responsibility being placed on the caregiver.

The OP’s flight-attendant experience may include emergency training and customer service, but that does not automatically qualify someone to manage complex elder care alone.

A different perspective is that Marcus may have approached the OP precisely because he considered them trustworthy and compassionate.

Finding dependable care for a vulnerable relative can be stressful, and he may have believed the free room added meaningful value.

Yet his behavior after the refusal exposes the deeper problem.

Rather than asking what fair compensation would look like, he became offended and announced that he would call again.

That response treated the OP’s financial vulnerability as leverage rather than recognizing their right to decline.

That expert guidance makes the phrase “light duty” especially misleading.

A nearly bedbound person may require lifting, toileting assistance, repositioning, meal preparation, supervision, and nighttime responses.

Some tasks may also require specific training to protect both parties from injury.

The U.S. Department of Labor states that covered domestic care workers generally must receive applicable minimum wages for working time, while sleep or personal time can be excluded only under defined conditions when the worker is genuinely free from duty.

The OP was right to decline and block further pressure.

Marcus needs a legitimate care plan involving qualified workers, realistic shifts, relief coverage, and lawful compensation, not one “nice” acquaintance expected to sacrifice an entire summer.

The most revealing moment was his confusion when asked whether he would accept $200 himself.

People often recognize unfairness immediately when they imagine bearing its cost.

Care is valuable labor, and affection for a vulnerable person does not justify underpaying the human being responsible for keeping them safe.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters said a bed-bound patient needs professional, live-in care

missalissaliss − Yeah "she's bed-bound" and "it's light duty" is like saying

something is both tall and short.

TigerB65 − Bed bound??? They need a pro carer.

tammyfaye2098 − That pay is ridiculous. I work with a home care agency

that actually does live in care for people and we pay 200 per day. That

includes all room and board as well. Plus conditions have to be livable

These Redditors criticized wealthy relatives for being cheap while neglecting Auntie

Mamamagpie − Honestly if someone can afford multiple homes in a

desirable area… they can afford a nurse and air conditioning.

GoodMilk_GoneBad − A/C is cheaper than 2 houses. What a POS. Letting

Auntie suffer while they stay cool somewhere else. Offering another

person to suffer with and take care of Auntie for less than $30 a day. This is

not a good person.

Fearless_Piccolo8186 − The rich stay rich cause they’re super f__king cheap.

These users agreed that $200 per week was insulting and far below fair pay

Forward-Switch-2304 − From [seniorcare. com](http://seniorcare. com)

Prices in dollars Home Health Care (8hrs/week): 693 Adult Day Care

(Weekdays only): 1,492 Assisted Living: 3,600 Homemaker Services (44

hours per week): 3,721 By the way, these are the National Average Cost in

the US. Your friend not only has lost touch with reality, he has lost touch with everything.

Worriedlytumescent − I just paid someone $140 to watch my two dogs for

less than 24 hours. $200 a week for a human is criminal.

Puddin370 − He really thinks someone wants to do work for less than

minimum wage. Plus, that's a lot of work for crappy pay. Crazy

WrappedInLinen − Unless it was taking care of family or close friend, I

wouldn’t do that for $200 a day. That’s just an insulting thing to ask.

Especially being offended when you declined as though you somehow

were obligated.

These commenters flatly rejected the unreasonable offer and praised the refusal

midwest73 − My response to that offer. ... hahahaha! Oh wait, you were

serious? Let me laugh even harder HAHAHAHA! !!!

Quadling − ah, the entitled douchefreighters! hell no. Good call.

Outrageous_Animal120 − Oh, hell no. Not ever happening.

The entitlement in this situation comes from the assumption that someone else’s time and labor should be available just because there is a personal connection.

A three-month, seven-day-a-week caregiving commitment for a nearly bedbound person is not “light duty,” especially without proper pay, breaks, or even basic living conditions like air conditioning.

The private room does not replace fair compensation or respect for the responsibility involved.

Do you think the biggest issue was the unrealistic offer, or the expectation that a former acquaintance would simply step into a caregiver role?

Would you have handled the request differently, or was walking away the only reasonable choice? Share your thoughts below.
