Man Stole His Phone At A Theater, But The Truth He Found Years Later Broke Him

in Social Issues

Sometimes, the people who briefly cross our lives leave behind stories we never expect to carry with us. A stranger can be remembered not because of a long friendship, but because of one strange encounter that reveals a much deeper and more complicated human story.

The original poster (OP) lost their phone at a movie theater and later discovered that the person who took it had accidentally left behind pieces of his digital life.

Years later, curiosity led OP to search for the man again, only to uncover a heartbreaking journey filled with struggles, loneliness, and a tragic ending. Read on to find out how a stolen phone became an unexpected reminder of the hidden battles people may be facing.

A man tracks down the thief who stole his phone years ago, only to uncover a heartbreaking story behind the stranger’s life

Man Stole His Phone At A Theater, But The Truth He Found Years Later Broke Him
not the actual photo

'Five years ago a guy at the theater stole my phone'

So I forgot my iPhone at a movie theater five years ago today.

This guy who worked there stole the device, signed into it with his personal email accounts, and started taking selfies with it.

I called the theater relentlessly about it going missing because I saw the tracking showing it was last seen at the theater.

Important side note: this was before I had enabled Find My iPhone and was using a horrid app which stopped working whenever it would be most useful.

Anyways, so after about a week of calling, what do you know?, my phone shows up!

I pick it up the same day and proceed with my day like usually, satisfied now that I'd gotten my phone back.. bzzt!

My phone buzzed as a got an email. I quickly glanced at the subject line and didn't understand

why I was getting bank notices from a bank that I didn't use and then I checked the "to" field. "HOLY S__T!" I thought to myself.

The perp signed into his email account on my phone! I quickly typed his email into google and I came up empty.

I tried and tried to find social media for this dude or really anything at all to go on.

I didn't even have his name because his bank overdraft alert didn't even include his name.

Defeated, I screenshotted all the information I had and dumped into a folder on my computer.

Three years ago I accidentally stumbled into the folder while I was looking for some mysteriously lost documents,

which I did never find if you care: probably Dropbox's fault, and decide to say f__k it and try again.

I pasted the email into google and once again came up empty handed.

This perplexed me since anytime I pasted my email into Google I get over 100 pages of results but nonetheless

I was determined to hunt down this d__k who stole a phone I didn't even own at that point anymore. I looked at his email for a little

while and realized something: he's probably using the standard email address format (first initial+lastname+random two digit number).

I put this lovely tidbit of information into Google along along with the state that we are both in and what do you know: I got a facebook profile.

His facebook profile had just been launched four months ago as I flick through his mostly pointless status

updates I keep seeing the relationship status flick between "In a relationship" "Single" and "it's complicated".

This girl (at the time his status was complicated) and him seemed to be posting happy selfies of each other kissing

and then not ten days later I see a post about how she's a selfish b__ch and oh-would-you-look-at-that another selfie saying that they

made up and are back together for good. I scroll to the top to check out his bio. 33 years old. Current lives at "Your mom".

Works at: unemployed. Already feeling s__tty, I decide to go and checkout his family (I recommend that you guys turn up your privacy settings btw!).

This guy's sister apparently got married and they seemed to be happy (sister turned her privacy settings up sometime between then and now),

had a child, and is running a weird vietnamese/india fusion restaurant in San Francisco.

Now I felt really bad for this guy: he was in an unstable relationship, unemployed, and trailing far behind in his sister's success.

I closed his facebook profile feeling terrible.

My friend just texted me today saying that he found his phone after he'd forgotten on the city bus.

Nothing had happened to it because of iCloud lock, passcodes, and all sorts of fancy security however it reminded of my good-sad 'ol friend on facebook.

I tap in his name and last know username combo I'd came up with three years ago and while I did find his facebook profile again,

there was a top search result: his dating profile. While I won't go into much detail about it I've got to say it was pretty out there.

There was a "two truths one lie" section and he (not a direct quote so y'all can't search him up) put the following:

* I like s__.

* My lips go numb when I give rimjobs.

* I road a tricycle into the public pool at midnight once as a teenager

Digging deeper into the profile I found out that he made less than 25k a year (and still lived in my city which is expensive!)

and was primarily looking for someone to "stave off the loneliness".

The sadness and empathy for this guy all came rushing back. He was what I was afraid I'd be: nearing my 40s without having found stable

love while also being financially insecure. I regretted clicking the link but I decided to check his facebook anyways.

I half wanted the pain and half hoped that he found love and had simply forgotten to update the dating page.

His facebook page loads. The first post/status update on the page is simply titled "Goodbye". "oh s__t", I thought to myself afraid of what would follow.

It was this guy's s**cide note, super short and it couldn't have been more than fifty words.

He talked about how he felt that he had nobody and that he was pointless and had nothing to live for. I glanced at the comments.

Three people had commented. His (apparent) grandmother, his sister, and someone who may have been his friend.

His grandma and sister pleaded him not to do it, begging him to message or call them. His "friend", however, simply comment "good".

The post is dated October 15th, 2015.

His facebook page hadn't been converted to a memorial page so I was still hopeful: maybe he realized how toxic social media

was on his life and decided it was time to get away. I clicked on his grandmother's account and scrolled through hundreds of status

updates I didn't read until I got to October of 2015. Attached to a status was a photo of a much younger version of this man.

She simply wrote "(name), may God have mercy on your restless soul. I hope you have finally found peace". He actually killed himself.

I don't know what to think at this point. I've written and rewritten this story multiple times and no matter what tone I take to try

and explain this to you all as well as myself I still can't understand how to feel.

I'd watched from afar as an unsuccessful man spiralled out of control and eventually exploded.

I knew him yet he will never, ever know me other than the guy who's s__tty, cracked phone he stole.

Sometimes the people who affect our lives the most are the ones who never truly knew us. A stranger can exist in the background of our story for years, leaving behind only a small moment, a mistake, or a memory.

But when we later discover the struggles they carried, that simple moment can transform into something much heavier. The OP’s story begins with anger over a stolen phone but ends with a painful reminder that every person has a life far beyond the worst thing they ever did.

The emotional complexity of this story comes from the OP’s changing perception of the person who stole the phone. At first, the thief was simply someone who violated trust and caused frustration. He was a stranger who took something valuable and invaded the OP’s privacy.

But years later, after seeing glimpses of his life online, the OP began seeing a struggling human being rather than just an offender. The discovery of his loneliness, financial struggles, unstable relationships, and eventual death created a conflict between two emotions: the knowledge that he did something wrong and the realization that he was also someone experiencing pain.

A different perspective is that this story shows how easily people become reduced to a single action. The man may always be remembered by the OP as “the person who stole my phone,” but his life contained countless experiences, relationships, hopes, and fears that had nothing to do with that moment. This does not excuse his behavior.

Someone can make harmful choices and still deserve compassion as a human being. Understanding someone’s struggles does not erase accountability; it simply recognizes that people are often more complicated than their worst decisions.

Psychologist and author Dr. Kristin Neff, known for her research on self-compassion, explains that compassion involves recognizing suffering without ignoring responsibility. She describes compassion as a way of responding to human struggles with understanding rather than judgment, acknowledging that imperfection and hardship are universal parts of life.

This perspective helps explain why the OP felt conflicted. They were not suddenly saying the theft was acceptable. They were grieving the realization that behind the frustrating experience was someone who had been quietly struggling.

The hardest part may have been recognizing that the person who caused harm was also someone who needed help, connection, and support.

The story also highlights the importance of noticing the people around us. Many people who appear difficult, unsuccessful, or isolated may be carrying battles that are invisible to everyone else. A person’s online profile, job status, or relationship history can never fully reveal what is happening internally.

The OP will probably never know exactly what led this man to his final decision, and that uncertainty is part of what makes the story so haunting. But perhaps the most meaningful lesson is that every person we encounter has a much larger story than the small chapter we experience.

Sometimes the stranger who frustrates us is also someone who has been struggling in ways we never saw. And remembering that can make us a little more patient, a little more aware, and a little more human.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters found the story surreal and appreciated how it revealed the hidden lives of strangers

offtochasethesun − Whoa that is kind of weird. I wonder if there is a name for this sort of thing.

There was a radiolab episode on slightly similar situation. Complete stranger observing neighbor's life and death through her window.

http://www.radiolab. org/story/living-room/

eykei − Great story. I believe you but even if it was fabricated, it still illuminates the fact that everyone you cross paths with has an entire life story.

And the technology aspect of it is amazing- turning a fleeting encounter to a voyeuristic saga. Good writing too I actually feel sad as well.

n1nj4_v5_p1r4t3 − I can only express my extreme gratitude for your sharing with simple words. Thank you for sharing.

These users reflected on the complexity of suicide, grief, and the emotions people experience after witnessing tragedy

Fart_Bringer − I can't imagine how you feel.

On one hand, it's instinctual to feel that primal rage against someone low enough to steal from another person,

while our humanity makes us feel sorry for the guy who felt so lost and alone that he decided to end his life.

cheyenne_sky − You oddly crossed paths with a stranger who had a tragic story.

Does part of you feel subconsciously guilty for not reaching out to him three years ago?

(I only ask, because after reading your story, I would feel that way). If so, I'm sure your conscious mind knows it is not your fault at all.

People suffer, and there's not always a way to know of it or do anything.

It's very sad that this man felt alone and helpless until it was too late. At least someone (you) has read his story.

One could take it as a lesson; if a friend or acquaintance is withdrawing/going through a difficult time, reach out to them.

It doesn't have to be a dramatic rescue mission, just a 'Hey I saw you posted xyz. How are you? '

Cauca − One of my friends killed himself last summer. This made him the seventh of my friends to do it. None of them knew each other.

I almost did it too during a very long, very dark period of my life.

In my opinion this guy being all you feared to be, his sad story and your empathy towards it, are all about your astonishment

at the fabrics of our reality, and the fact that you, everyone, is on the same boat to some extent.

At least that is what happens to me from time to time when confronting certain events, like the death or mental disintegration of a loved one.

Life can be that scary. The key word is "can". For many of us, it's about what you develop within and around you, and how.

This guy, he created much of what he had or didn't have.

He had many more opportunities than he ever saw, I'm completely certain.

In fact, he had the opportunity to reach of for help instead of k__ling himself.

He had the opportunity to turn a huge mass of s__t into something so much better, by virtue of some degree of conscience, luck and determination/patience.

He just never got to experience himself in a way that would allow for that. I was that guy.

I read a lot, asked for all the help I could find, tried all that was available to me.

I endured through inexplicable stuff, and I am now almost 100% the guy I wanted to be, at 37 years old. I love myself and my life.

Much of it is thanks to having gone through such a bleak existence for more years than I want to confess, and learning my way out.

These commenters focused on the unexpected connections technology can create between strangers

bijobini − Dang, man! I have a somewhat related story.

About 12 years ago, when I was a young teenager, I got really interested in learning how to hack websites.

One day, I wanted to impress my friend so I searched for some site that looked vulnerable and found a personal website that had a "private" section.

Said section was only protected by a JavaScript prompt so I found the password in clear text in the source.

Long story short, he used the same password for his FTP account and email account.

I dickishly proceeded to change his index.html to a blank page saying "HACKED! I will contact you with details on how to revert back to your old page".

I then sent the guy an email from his own account with instructions on how to fix his site and make it more secure.

Now this is where this gets interesting, I must have saved his email address somewhere but I really don't remember doing so.

I joined LinkedIn a couple years ago with an email address that I didn't have until my 20s and, somehow, LinkedIn keeps telling me

that I should add this guy as a connection. I have no idea how they figured out that I "know" him but I think that's cool.

I checked his profile and he is now working in the network security industry so I can't help but feel that I had an influence on this guy's life

even though I never had a conversation with him and he lives across the globe.

EDIT: maybe he is still trying to track me down and this post will be his big break haha!

EDIT2: When I got home, I checked my gmail (which I use for linkedin) contacts and he is not in there.

He is, however, in my hotmail contacts, which is the account I had at the time.

I don't remember how/when he got into my contacts, I searched my inbox and I have no emails to/from him or referencing him.

I'm still curious as to how LinkedIn figured out my hotmail contacts from my gmail account. .. Mystery still partially unsolved. ..

EDIT3: I just checked his LinkedIn profile and he moved to where I used to live, he's finally coming to get his revenge! !

Angharaz − Man, that's actually quite surreal. I feel compelled to make a short film based on your story. Do you give permission?

These users shared personal experiences involving suicide, mental health struggles, and attempts to help people in crisis

Tezcatlipokemon − I had a really disturbing experience kind of like this one night

when I bore witness to somebody making some pretty serious escalating threats on this random social media website one night last year.

Basically live-streaming an absolute mental break.

I tried to report it, but the website was small as social media goes and so it didn't care and didn't want to be in a position to care.

The authorities weren't prepared to handle concerns about strangers over the internet and essentially laughed it off.

A s**cide hotline essentially hung up on me. And I didn't know what to do.

I'd never been around serious s**cide threats before. It was terrifying.

All the while there were these pictures rolling in of open pill bottles in his hand and his weapon collection and on and on.

People were saying things like, "can I have your stuff? lol" and "what a waste of good pills. " It was pretty crazy. This must be happening all over.

I ended up spending like 12 hours trying to get in touch with anybody that could help.

In the end I paid Facebook $1 to contact his family after essentially stalking my way through the entire internet data mining as I went to his family (which was...

I talked to them afterwards and his brother said in this kind of shellshocked way that he thought it could have gone either way,

that he thought there was real danger.

I think we have a very serious culture problem.

And we have to do something. Something needs to be done, but I can't find others that want to talk about it.

I tried my best for months to write an entertaining long form piece on that experience

(which has been one of the most affecting on a now fairly "travelled" path) in such a way that it might inspire a discussion.

But I can't find a place to publish interested enough in the concept enough to even check it out.

I get more worried everyday about the future. If the globe warms, maybe we as one can cool it.

If the bombs fly, all the world might stop their flight. If disease spreads, together we will cure it.

But if the lattice holding us in configuration to stage the efforts rots to collapse, what will act to build it back?

Fagadaba − Damn. That is the exact same date I went into the hospital after my last(4th) s**cide attempt.

Can someone grieve a stranger who once harmed them? Does sympathy soften anger, or simply sit beside it? Share thoughtful perspectives below.
