Maureen Tried To Steal All The Grapes, So They Stayed Up All Night Picking Every Single One

Some neighbors just know how to push your buttons, and for one Redditor, Maureen was that neighbor. Every year, Maureen tried to swoop in and take the grapes from the land their family rented, despite being told repeatedly that their family had first rights to them.

This year, when Maureen got pushy and demanded all the grapes after the Redditor’s mom had trouble picking due to her husband’s illness, the Redditor snapped. In a dramatic turn, the Redditor and their mom spent the night picking every single grape to ensure Maureen couldn’t take any.

What followed was an unexpected apology from Maureen, though the Redditor still wasn’t ready to forgive her. Was this a justified response to years of disrespect, or did they overdo it? Keep reading to see how the community feels about this vineyard showdown.

A woman’s family battles an entitled neighbor every year over picking grapes from a landlord’s vineyard, leading to a tense showdown

Maureen Tried To Steal All The Grapes, So They Stayed Up All Night Picking Every Single One
not the actual photo

'We're picking ALL the grapes?'

My parents rent a house on a ¼ acre of land.

The land with rows of grapes is not being rented to my parents,

but the landlord lets us pick them and juice them every year.

The only access to the grapes is through the land my parents rent.

Before my parents moved in, this old lady "Maureen" used to pick the grapes with her family and juice them.

As a side note, Maureen has her own grapes, but she likes to use our landlord's grapes too because previous tenants did not.

Every F__KING year, it's a battle to make Maureen wait to pick grapes so we can pick a share.

The landlord has been clear that we get first dibs on the grapes because we're his actual tenants.

We always leave her at least a row (one of four).

Every year, she tries to be a sneaky lil b__ch and get the grapes. But this year was the worst.

My mom told Maureen that she was going to pick the grapes this weekend.

Well, this weekend came and went without being able to pick grapes;

my mom's helper crew got sick, my dad was recovering from major surgery, and she couldn't find the time or energy.

Maureen's crotchety old ass calls to inform my mom that she is coming tomorrow to pick all the grapes we didn't.

My mom asked her to please wait a few more days as her husband (my dad) has cancer and her helpers were sick.

Maureen's response: "That's too bad. You had your chance.

My family is coming tomorrow and we are picking the grapes."

Of course my poor mom loses it at this point and begins screaming,

"SHAME ON YOU MAUREEN! YOU CALL YOURSELF A CHRISTIAN!"

Maureen continues telling her she had her chance.

So my mom came in and told me this story. I said: "Absolutely F__KING not."

We are staying up as late as needed to pick every single g__pe off the vines. Every single one.

We both called as many friends as we could. The troops are being gathered.

We now have about 10 people to help us pick the grapes.

We will pick every single g__pe so that when stupid Maureen and her stupid family show up,

there will not be one little fruit left on the vine. ALL NIGHTER FOR THE GRAPES.

UPDATE: omg wow okay well I love how many of you would help pick grapes!!

It makes me feel bad about the fact that the update isn’t super satisfying.

Maureen called my mom last night (an hour or so into picking?) to apologize and said we could have all the grapes.

My mom, being a much better person than I am, told her she can still have a row or two

because we didn’t NEED all the grapes. But Maureen kept saying no and that she won’t come by at all.

Ironically it almost sounded like she was throwing a fit about it??

Like b__ch we’re being nice and still letting you come?? So we did pick grapes but not everything. We still hate Maureen.

Apparently she’s 92 and she believes she will live forever because of her homemade g__pe juice,

so that’s one reason she’s so crazy about this whole thing.

Maybe she will live forever, but that would be unfortunate because she’s an a__hole.

Family conflict over something as simple as grapes. OP and their family have been struggling with a recurring issue every year: access to grapes on their landlord’s property.

The landlord has given OP’s family the right to pick the grapes, but Maureen, a former tenant, insists on taking more than her fair share every year.

This recurring conflict comes to a head when Maureen disregards OP’s family’s request to pick first, prompting OP to take matters into their own hands and pick every last grape in retaliation.

Psychologically, this situation is a classic example of territorial conflict, a theory which explains how humans (and animals) can feel a strong sense of ownership over resources, even if those resources are shared.

As Environmental Psychology notes, “People often exhibit territorial behavior when they perceive something as their own, and when others threaten that resource, they engage in conflict to protect it”.

In this case, OP and their family felt a sense of ownership over the grapes, something that Maureen did not respect, and that perception led to a heightened emotional reaction.

Maureen’s insistence on taking the grapes and disregarding the family’s right to them also demonstrates a sense of entitlement.

Psychological theories on place attachment suggest that as people age, they become more attached to certain possessions or spaces. This attachment can lead to an increased desire to protect or hold onto these resources.

As noted in Place Attachment and Aging, “Older adults develop emotional bonds with places, possessions, and objects as part of maintaining identity, memory, and continuity”.

Maureen’s emotional attachment to the grapes, possibly as a source of comfort or even a part of her identity, could explain why she feels so entitled to them, even at the expense of OP’s family.

At the same time, OP’s reaction, a full-scale grape-picking effort to prevent Maureen from getting any, is rooted in reactive aggression. This term describes a response to perceived injustice or disrespect, where the individual feels the need to “level the playing field.”

According to Realistic Conflict Theory, competition for limited resources (in this case, the grapes) often leads to conflict between groups, especially when each group perceives the other as a threat.

OP’s decision to pick all the grapes was a response to what they saw as Maureen’s unfair behavior. It was a way to assert their right to the resource, but it also escalated the situation.

Interestingly, while OP’s actions might have felt justifiable in the moment, it’s important to reflect on the consequences of such an aggressive approach.

Conflict experts like Dr. John Gottman suggest that while standing up for yourself can be empowering, escalating a conflict often leads to long-term emotional harm. Gottman explains that “Escalating conflict, even when one feels justified, usually harms the relationship more than it helps”.

In this case, OP may have felt a sense of victory after Maureen backed off, but it’s possible that the emotional aftermath of the conflict could affect the relationship for years to come.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

This group suggested practical and somewhat petty ideas for handling Maureen

Federal-Emotion − Such a Maureen! Please update when she finds out!

[Reddit User] − I'm kinda envious that you know 10 people who you told your plan

for petty revenge and agreed to pull an all-nighter to make it happen.

Zoreb1 − Not sure why you can't tell Maureen she no longer has access

via the land you are renting. Lock the gate or something.

CoderJoe1 − Motion activated sprinklers would keep her cooled off.

These commenters embraced the petty revenge aspect

Bubbly-Fennel-7113 − I woulda left her just one single g__pe.

88mistymage88 − Talk about The Grapes of Wrath!

robbietreehorn − Leave a note on the empty vines that reads

“if you had been a decent human and neighbor and been considerate of my husband’s cancer,

which I told you about, we would have left you plenty. ”

Maybe leave one g__pe and drape the vine over the note.

You know she didn’t tell her friends and family that little tid bit. Shame her.

These Redditors appreciated the dedication involved in the grape picking

tpb772000 − I have picked grapes and muscadines before.

This is some next level dedication and very impressive. Are you guys planning on selling the excess?

Either_Coconut − Good for you! And I would be doing that every year from now on... or else,

tell the landlord what Maureen is putting your family through.

Maybe he will revoke her permission to pick his grapes. She has her own grapes anyway. Let her pick those.

This commenter found humor in the rivalry between the two households over grapes that neither family owns

ChargeActual5097 − I find some sense of amusement out of the fact that

2 households are battling each other over grapes that neither family owns lol

This comment expressed sympathy for the OP’s family

tulip27 − I hope that your Dad is doing well! I bet picking those grapes was a great stress reliever!

Do you think Maureen truly realized she crossed the line, or was she just throwing a fit about not getting her way? Should the OP have let her have her grapes to avoid further drama, or was this the perfect way to stand their ground? Let’s hear your take!
