When a mother left her 11-month-old son with his grandmother for the first extended period of time, she expected the arrangement to be safe. Instead, she came home to discover an injury that left her furious, frightened, and questioning whether she could trust her mother-in-law around her baby again.
The family had recently moved in with the husband’s mother temporarily. The husband’s family business had just opened, and the couple planned to stay in the family home for a few months while they got settled.
The mother was breastfeeding, so her son was usually with her most of the time. Her mother-in-law had watched him before, but never for more than a couple of hours. On this particular day, however, the couple needed to transfer belongings from their old apartment, so the grandmother agreed to watch the baby for roughly five or six hours.
There was already one issue the mother had repeatedly discussed with her mother-in-law: her son’s foreskin.
The baby was uncircumcised, and the mother had always followed her pediatric surgeon’s recommendation not to retract it. She cleaned the area gently and had never had problems with infections or other issues.
Her mother-in-law, however, strongly disagreed.
According to the mother, the grandmother was “obsessed” with retracting the baby’s foreskin. She believed it needed to be pulled back and rubbed to remove supposed dirt or buildup. In fact, the grandmother had retracted the baby’s foreskin shortly after he was born, before the mother understood that this was not recommended.
Once the mother learned more about proper infant care, she specifically told her mother-in-law never to retract it again.
Despite that warning, the mother remained concerned about her mother-in-law’s attitude toward the issue.
On the day in question, the mother changed her son’s diaper before leaving and said everything appeared completely normal. She then left him in his grandmother’s care while she and her husband handled the move.
When she returned, she prepared to change her son again.
That’s when she noticed something was wrong.
There was significant redness around the top of the baby’s penis. When she carefully examined the area, she saw that a portion of the skin appeared raw and damaged. It was red, swollen, and almost bloody, with visible fissures and an open wound.
The mother was horrified.
She immediately confronted her mother-in-law and asked whether she had cleaned the baby’s genital area.
The grandmother said that she had.
But when asked whether she had retracted the foreskin, she denied doing so. She claimed she had simply cleaned the baby and applied cream.
The mother wasn’t convinced.
She knew her son’s skin had been healthy when she left, and she already knew how strongly her mother-in-law believed that retracting the foreskin was necessary. Given the condition of the injury and the timing, she strongly suspected that her mother-in-law had ignored her instructions.

The mother was furious but knew the most important thing was getting her son medical attention.
She took the baby to the doctor to determine whether the injury had caused any lasting damage.
Fortunately, the doctor said the baby should recover and that there did not appear to be permanent damage.
For the mother, however, that did not erase what had happened.
She was relieved that her son would be okay, but she remained deeply upset that someone had apparently ignored a clear parental instruction and potentially injured her baby.
She also felt particularly hurt by her husband’s reaction.
After the medical appointment, he reportedly became distant and gave her the silent treatment. From his perspective, because the doctor believed the baby would heal, the situation seemed less serious.
That left the mother feeling as though her concerns were somehow being dismissed simply because the injury was not permanent.
She explained that the fact her son would recover did not make the incident acceptable.
To her, the issue wasn’t only the injury itself. It was the fact that she had specifically instructed her mother-in-law not to retract the baby’s foreskin, yet she believed that instruction had been ignored.
She also questioned why her mother-in-law had not immediately told her about the injury if nothing improper had happened.
The experience ultimately forced the mother to reconsider the entire living arrangement.
She explained that this incident was only one example in a longer history of problems with her mother-in-law. Living under the same roof had already been difficult, and now she no longer felt comfortable leaving her child alone with the grandmother.
She began looking into alternative housing so she and her baby could leave the family home.

Others were shocked that the grandmother continued to insist on her own method even after being directly told not to do it.
