New Mom Says Husband Criticized Her Appearance Days After Giving Birth

A new mother is questioning her relationship after her husband criticized her appearance only days after childbirth.

This Redditor explains that after a difficult pregnancy and labor, she expected time to recover while adjusting to life with a newborn.

Although her husband initially seemed supportive, things changed when he criticized the dinner she made and later told her he expected her to shave because he found her body hair unattractive.

She felt hurt that he focused on her appearance while she was still exhausted, sore, and caring for their baby. Now she is wondering whether she is overreacting or whether his behavior crossed a line during a vulnerable time.

'AIO, my husband M26 told me F23 I needed to shave because it’s unattractive to him. I just gave birth?'

So, I should start this off with the start, and I apologize if this is hard/confusing to read, because I’ve never used reddit before.

Me and my husband, have been together for three years and everything was perfect,

nine months ago I got pregnant, and It was a shock because I was previously told I might not have kids,

for personal reasons I will not say here, and so we did not use protection,

If we didn't have kids, well we could adopt one day, I came to terms with it, and if I had gotten pregnant we would be so happy.

Anyway, when we found out I was pregnant we were ecstatic and my family had a barbeque.

Eventually, it came up that I might have a miscarriage, and obviously I cried.

My cousin, the one who said it, said that I needed to think about it, and that it might happen, and if it did, we shouldn't be shocked.

My husband yelled at my cousin and we left, later my mother called me and said we were overreacting

and my cousin wanted to apologize, which was most likely because my mother told her to.

Anyway, that was around nine months ago, so I shouldn't open old cuts, right?

During the nine months my husband was like every girl's dream, sure, we argued sometimes, but nothing bad

and it was always something we got over. It was like a Disney movie, if you understand lol.

I was in labor for around 8 hours? It was painful, but when I saw her, when I saw my beautiful baby I cried so much, and it felt so...

She was 19 inches and 7 pounds.

During the time I was in labor my husband was either holding my hand or in the hall because he got sick or in the bathroom because he was tired.

I was in the hospital for two days to get monitored then got discharged and my husband came and got me.

When we got home my husband was pampering me, and to be honest, I think I just wanted to be left alone. I was sweaty, and sore, and so tired.

During the past days I have been in pain, it hurts to walk, which is usual, it's just cramps, lol.

But I’m still cleaning everything up, making dinner, and taking care of the baby while he's (I think?) fixing his mother's old shed in her backyard.

Today, my husband came home from doing that and saw what i made for dinner, it was a pasta with zucchini,

he said that it looked DISGUSTING and all he wanted after a hard day was pizza,

I told him that he never told me that and he said it was because I’m SO hard to talk to now, he said that I’m always tired and moody.

I apologized then got up and went to our room. Maybe two hours later he came into the room and said he put our daughter to bed and asked why...

I told him that what he said really hurt my feelings and he apologized then said he was just frustrated

and I said I understood that, but he shouldn’t take it out on me.

He apologized and put his hand on my hip and I smiled at him.

He moved his hand to my leg then said that I felt “spiky” and he noticed there's hair in my armpits too,

I told him that I’m tired and I haven't shaved recently, I didn't think it mattered that much.

He told me that by tomorrow he EXPECTS me to shave.

I told him that that's ridiculous and he said that it’s completely rational and every man thinks women with body hair is ugly.

I asked if he thought I was ugly? And he didn't say anything.

I told him that I JUST gave birth and I want to recover.

He said that I can, he just expected me to be pretty when I did.

I covered myself in the blanket and tried to go to bed as he just huffed upset.

He laid next to me and tried to cuddle so I got up and now I’m lying on the floor in my daughter's room next to her crib writing this.

Few moments in life leave a person more physically and emotionally vulnerable than the days after giving birth. The body has gone through an enormous transformation, emotions are shifting, sleep is limited, and a new parent is trying to understand an entirely different version of life.

During that period, even small comments about appearance can feel much heavier because they touch a deeper fear: “Am I still valued when I am exhausted and not at my best?”

In this situation, the original poster was not simply upset because her husband mentioned shaving. The pain came from the timing, the expectation, and the message behind his words. She had recently experienced childbirth, was recovering physically, caring for their newborn, and still handling household responsibilities.

Instead of feeling supported and appreciated, she felt evaluated based on whether she still looked attractive. Her husband may have been expressing a personal preference, but the way he communicated it turned a preference into pressure. The issue was not body hair alone; it was whether she felt loved during one of the most vulnerable periods of her life.

A different perspective is that the husband may also be struggling with the sudden changes that come with becoming a parent. Some partners experience stress, exhaustion, or difficulty adjusting after a baby arrives.

However, adjustment does not justify placing unrealistic expectations on the person who physically carried and delivered the child. The mother’s body is not simply returning to its previous state on a schedule. It is recovering from an intense medical event while adapting to a demanding new role.

Psychologist Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, co-founder of the Gottman Institute, has emphasized that successful relationships depend heavily on emotional responsiveness, showing care and understanding when a partner is vulnerable. She explains that couples strengthen their connection when they turn toward each other’s needs rather than dismissing or criticizing them.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also highlights that postpartum recovery involves significant physical and emotional changes, and new mothers need support, rest, and care during this transition.

This perspective helps explain why the shaving comment affected OP so deeply. She was not asking her husband to never have preferences. She was hoping that after giving birth, her partner would first notice her pain, effort, and exhaustion.

A loving relationship requires recognizing that attraction can exist alongside compassion. A person can find their partner beautiful while also understanding that recovery comes before appearance.

The most important conversation here is not about whether body hair is attractive. It is about whether both partners feel respected after a major life change. The husband needs to understand that his wife’s body has just accomplished something extraordinary, and she needs reassurance rather than criticism.

They may need to discuss responsibilities, postpartum expectations, and emotional needs before resentment grows. The healthiest relationships are not built on looking perfect during difficult moments; they are built on feeling safe enough to be imperfect while still being loved.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters strongly criticized the husband’s expectations and viewed his behavior as disrespectful

Careless-Ability-748 − I'd probably get kicked off reddit if I used the words I want to use to describe him.

If my husband told me he EXPECTS me to shave, I'd laugh in his face.

slimmer01 − NOR. I would NEVER be able to look at him the same way after hearing that if I were you.

Ambitious_Ad3515 − NOR this just pissed me off. CONGRATS ON THE BABY but EFF THAT GUY.

These Redditors believed the postpartum period revealed serious relationship concerns that should not be dismissed

princessfoxglove − So many men wait until there is a baby to reveal this side of themselves.

aribeh − NOR. You’ll never forget how you’re treated postpartum and this is a clear picture of who he is. So sorry OP.

umbbie − NOR. This isn’t “crazy woman pregnancy hormonal mood swings” and don’t let him tell you it is.

Start saving money now to leave him, because once he realizes your body and your life

(your life, not his, because he can walk away and just pay support)

will never be the same, he will find some other woman that he thinks is pretty enough and follows his demands.

This group emphasized that OP deserved support, recovery time, and control over her own body after childbirth

Mochi-Boy-Mwah − NOR - the only tasks you should be doing are recovering from the traumas of giving birth

and being with your child for your reasonable share of the time.

It is unfair to force you to do the household labor so soon after birth, to neither appreciate the meal

you cooked while physically strained and to treat you with disrespect over it not being his preference, to consistently insult you,

to attempt to assert control over your appearance or body, or to work in the shed instead of using his available time to support his newly growing family.

It’s important to set clear and specific boundaries about these things, which you’ve already started doing, good,

and I wonder if you can stay with a relative or friend for a few days for extra help with the baby since clearly he’s not pitching in?

I absolutely in no way want to scare or upset you, but I personally find comfort in prepping for the unlikely worst-case.

Only if you’re comfortable with it, if you DM me, I can help find resources for gaining independence when financial stability isn’t a given,

or even just hotlines for if the situation escalates and you need supports, so you don’t have to look by yourself if it’s overwhelming.

You aren’t alone, and you don’t deserve this. I am so incredibly sorry, OP

Time_Cranberry_113 − Your husband is extremely superficial. You are waiting on him like a servant. NOR.

TaxiLady69 − NOR. Personally I would not shave anything at all for at least the next 6 months,

and when he says something about how unattractive it is I would respond with "Perfect I wasn't trying to attract you anyway and

when you say mean things it makes you extremely unattractive and makes me want to have nothing to do with you s__ually. "

These users criticized the husband for being absent and failing to help with childcare and household responsibilities

xlightbrightx − How sure are you that he is at his mother's fixing his shed?

Why isn't he helping with his child? Being elsewhere during the first week is insane, I would make sure he doesn't have a side hoe tbh.

Either way, this behavior is unacceptable. Currently sitting here with a decent bush and week old stubble on legs next to my 8 month old... My man hits it every...

Should partners be more understanding during the postpartum period, or should couples openly discuss attraction even during difficult transitions? Share your thoughts below!
