Parents Let Their Kids Harass a Couple’s Table, Then Get Angry When They’re Asked to Stop Touching Crutches

Some public places have their own unique charm, but they also come with an unspoken set of rules.

When a place offers a rare experience, most people understand that excitement does not mean ignoring everyone else’s comfort or personal space.

One man planned a special date night with his girlfriend at a popular dive bar known for its delicious food and unusual visitors outside the windows.

Since his girlfriend was recovering from a serious foot injury, he wanted to give her a chance to enjoy herself after being stuck at home.

Their evening started perfectly until a group of children nearby became fascinated with the attraction outside.

At first, he tried to be patient, assuming their parents would step in.

However, things became much more uncomfortable when the children’s attention shifted from the animals to something his injured girlfriend depended on.

Scroll down to see what happened next.

Couple’s special date is ruined when strangers’ children repeatedly invade their space and ignore boundaries

Parents Let Their Kids Harass a Couple’s Table, Then Get Angry When They’re Asked to Stop Touching Crutches
not the actual photo

'Entitled kids think they can play with my girlfriend's crutches?'

Last night, my girlfriend and I went out to eat at a popular dive bar. This bar

is popular for both its amazing fried chicken and their thriving raccoon

population. Because my girlfriend recently shattered her foot, she hasn’t

been able to get out much, and I thought this would be the perfect date to

cheer her up.

One side of the establishment has enormous bay windows through which

you can watch the raccoons enjoy table scraps as you eat. As this is a dive

bar, there are no reservations. You can’t choose where you sit. Thus,

seating next to the window is highly coveted.

In all the years I’ve been going there, I’ve had the privilege of sitting up

next to the window maybe twice. You can usually expect some people to

peer over your shoulder or snap a quick photo of the raccoons while you’re

eating, but most people are respectful about it.. Keyword: most.

Last night, the bar was overrun with children. It’s also late summer, which

means the baby raccoons are out in full swing. The two of us were seated

right next to the window (with my back parallel to the window and hers

facing the corner). At first, we had a great time cooing at the little raccoons

tearing into their early evening snacks. Then the children came.

Our table was flanked by three families, all with children under the age of

10. The first few times a kid got all up in my space, I cut their parents some

slack: children get excited about baby animals, and they’re still learning

boundaries, their parents just want a peaceful night out, etc. Thankfully,

two of the families corrected their kids and steered them away from our

space. The largest family of the bunch, however, did not.

I s__t you not, before we even got our food, these kids started banging on

the window with their fists. The kind of banging that would scare fish at an

aquarium. Right next to my ear, naturally. I’m thinking that a kid big enough

to be in third grade should know better, and his little brother should, too,

but they pay me no mind. It’s like I’m an NPC, vaguely in their way while

they embark on their quest to frighten as many unassuming animals as

possible. Their parents are watching, disinterested, but they don’t intervene.

My girlfriend, being the sweetheart that she is, sees my uncomfortable

face and asks if I want to switch spots. She reasons she’s more comfortable

with kids being in her space than I am. Once the last kid has returned to his

table, we switch places. To everyone watching us switch, it's obvious she's

in a cast. I make sure to put her crutches on her side of the table. I think to

myself: surely, they won't get all up in her space when that would risk

knocking over her crutches. Surely, their parents wouldn't allow it.

When I glance over at the family a few minutes later, the middle child is

staring at us. Entitled Dad is holding the pouty preschooler on his lap. The

oldest boy is knee-deep in his fried chicken. I mistakenly thought that the

worst was over.. No. No, it was not.

We're hardly fifteen minutes into our dinner when I look behind my

girlfriend and notice the older two boys standing directly behind her.

They're fiddling with her crutches, peeking through them, touching the

handlebars and screws. My jaw dropped. I made direct eye contact with

their mother, who seemed to be staring straight through me, and then with

the young parents sitting behind my girlfriend, who seemed just as

shocked as I was (their toddler was more well-behaved).

My girlfriend turned to the kids. "Hey, can you please not touch those?

These are medical aids, and I need them to walk. My foot is broken."

They gave her a blank stare. They didn't react with shame. They didn't even

stop touching them. The younger one went, "Oh, crutches?" as he pulled on

the rubber handle, and the older one said nothing.

My girlfriend said, gently but firmly, "Yes, they are crutches, and I need

them. Can you please stop touching them?"

They stared for a couple more seconds before wandering back to their

seats. I glanced over at the family a few minutes later and saw Entitled

Mom GLARING at us like she wanted to shoot lasers out of her eyes. My

girlfriend turned around to confirm, and Mom glared at her too. At that

point, the mood was ruined.

We left shortly after that, but they made sure to leave faster. Not a single

apology, or even an ounce of guilt. Just pure, unbridled entitlement.

Respect for personal space is one of those lessons people often learn gradually, but some boundaries should never require explanation.

A person’s table, belongings, and especially their medical equipment are not public property, even in a place filled with excitement and distractions.

The OP’s frustration was not really about children being fascinated by raccoons.

He understood that kids can become excited by unusual experiences, and he even gave them several chances because he recognized that learning boundaries takes time.

The problem was the absence of adult supervision and the expectation that everyone else should tolerate the disruption.

The situation became more serious when the children moved from looking through the window to touching the girlfriend’s crutches.

Those were not entertainment objects; they were necessary mobility aids connected to an injury.

A different perspective is that the parents may have become desensitized to their children’s behavior.

Some parents interpret curiosity as harmless and assume strangers will speak up if something is truly wrong.

However, that mindset shifts the responsibility onto the people being affected.

The OP and his girlfriend should not have needed to defend their personal space repeatedly while trying to enjoy a rare outing together.

A child’s excitement can be understandable while still requiring correction.

This explains why the most upsetting part of the story was not the children’s curiosity. It was the adults’ reaction.

The girlfriend directly and politely explained that the crutches were medical equipment and that she needed them.

Instead of embarrassment or an apology, the family reportedly responded with hostility.

That reaction suggests the issue was no longer a misunderstanding; it became a refusal to acknowledge a reasonable boundary.

The OP and his girlfriend did not ruin anyone’s evening by asking children not to touch important medical equipment.

They were protecting her independence and comfort.

In fact, the girlfriend handled the situation with impressive patience by explaining the boundary calmly rather than immediately confronting the parents.

Public spaces require everyone to share the environment, but sharing does not mean surrendering basic respect.

Children can learn curiosity and kindness at the same time. The responsibility belongs to the adults guiding them.

Sometimes the most considerate thing a parent can do is teach a child that another person’s experience does not exist for their entertainment.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters supported calling out rude behavior and holding people accountable

LinearityDrift − Proudest moment of my married life is when my wife asked

the parents in a case similar to this "Would you like some recommendations

on parenting classes for you and your husband? " I love that woman so much.

BaronessF − I'm a school teacher. I have absolutely no problem telling

people how to behave in public. It horrifies my husband at times, like when

I loudly asked the woman next to me in the movie theatre "ARE YOU

ALMOST DONE YOUR PHONE CALL? IF NOT, STEP OUT OF THE THEATRE

PLEASE. OTHERWISE PUT AWAY YOUR PHONE.

" When I say loudly, I mean my high school teacher voice, and I can project

to the back of the room.

speakezjags − People are way to friendly. At minimum the parents

deserved to be told to actually parent their children.

These Redditors agreed that public shaming can encourage better parenting

them_mauve_tones − Coming from a parent with four kids: Bring 👏🏽 back

👏🏽 normalizing 👏🏽 shaming 👏🏽 people 👏🏽 EVEN THE PARENTS

BungleBums − I've seen terrific results from people standing up and

announcing loudly "COULD WHOEVER BROUGHT THEIR SPOILED AND ILL-

BEHAVED CHILDREN, ATTEMPT TO WRANGLE THEM BACK SO I CAN EAT IN

PEACE? THANK YOU! " Public humiliation and shame are powerful

motivators. And yeah, it's a little cruel to the kids, but so is letting them

grow up like little shitlings. Call it out when you see it.

benny_hanna_ − I think my favorite comment that I ever heard an older

lady looked over at some parents who were at an absurd level of

delinquency and asked are you going to try parenting or was making them

enough for you two?

There was substantial laughter for most of the people in the venue and the

family was shamed enough that they scooped up their kids and left. The

pity of it is they should have been that shamed by their children's behavior

and not needed a comment.

These users shared experiences defending their mobility aids from disrespectful strangers

No-Enthusiasm3579 − I'm in a wheelchair, over the past 25 years I've had to

yell a handful of "don't touch my f__king chair"s after a calm "please don't

touch my wheelchair" warning, followed by shocked Pikachu face from the offender

alleecmo − Oh, Hell, naw. They get one "Can you please. .." If they persist

after that, its a rather loud "I said Don't. Touch. My. Things. If your mama

won't help you learn civil behavior, I guess I must. " All while staring directly

into that parent's soul. I've used crutches and other mobility aids off and

on (invisible disabilities suck! ), and refuse to tolerate that ish.

YouThinkYouKnowStuff − I guess I’m not afraid to say something to the

kids even in front of their parents. I walk with a cane so I make sure

nobody’s around touching my assistive device. And if a parent is too busy

looking at TikTok, then I’m going to tell the kids to stop.

The first time may be friendly but after that, I would be sending them back to their table.

These commenters believed parents should control their children and respond to bad behavior

HUNGWHITEBOI25 − you’re a nicer person than i am the second those little

brats touched her crutches i’d be yelling at their parents to control them

Jimmy_LoMein − "GET YOUR HANDS OFF THE FUCKIN' CRUTCHES! " That

would have done it.

fbresnah − I would've liked to yell "please keep your brats under control!

"OK maybe not that but I would have a word with the parents. This is the

second post I've read about unruly children. The other was about kids in a

live theater. Parents really do not give a damn.

Sometimes a simple night out can reveal a lot about respect, boundaries, and how people choose to treat strangers.

What started as a fun experience quickly became a reminder that excitement doesn’t excuse ignoring other people’s comfort or personal space.

Do you think the OP handled the situation fairly, or should they have confronted the parents sooner?

How would you react if someone crossed a boundary involving your health or belongings? Share your thoughts below, would you have stayed calm or spoken up immediately?
