She Took a Week Off Work, Then Her Friend Started Treating Her Free Time Like His Personal Errand List

in Social Issues

Having a day off does not automatically mean having nothing to do.

That became painfully clear to one parent after she mentioned to a friend that she would be off work for the entire week. The friend had recently been discharged from the hospital and was struggling to walk, so he needed help with certain errands.

At first, she was happy to help.

On Monday, he called and asked if she could pick up a few things from the supermarket. She did it without making a fuss. After all, her friend was recovering, and helping someone who genuinely needed it did not seem like a big deal.

But then the requests kept coming.

By Wednesday, the woman was beginning to feel less like a friend helping someone recover and more like someone who had accidentally announced that she was available for free labor all week.

And that was where she decided to draw the line.

She Took a Week Off Work, Then Her Friend Started Treating Her Free Time Like His Personal Errand List

'AITA For Not Doing Favors On My Days Off?'

Last week i mentioned to my friend that i will be off this week from work. My friend said it was good to know that i was off this week...

He recently got out the hospital and needs help doing certain things and can't walk that much right now.

He calls me Monday asking if i could bring him some things from the supermarket which i did.

He calls me again Tuesday asking if I could check his mail box since he is unable to walk to it but i said no because I was not home.

He calls me again today asking if i was available and I told him no because i was in my yard in the pool with my kids. He said it...

He gets upset and says that he does not understand why i can't do him that favor since I am home anyways.

I told him that I was spending time with my kids and helping him out would take an hour out of my day.

I also said checking his mailbox is something he can get one of his neighbors to do. He asked if i could go tomorrow and i told him i am...

He got upset but I told him he is not entitled to my free time. I don't mind doing favors when I am off but I get annoyed when you...

I also feel like checking mailboxes is wasting my time when he can get someone in his building to do it.. AITA

One Favor Turned Into an Expectation

The next day, her friend called again.

This time, he wanted her to check his mailbox because he was unable to walk that far.

She said no because she was not home.

Then he called again the following day and asked whether she was available.

She was home, but that did not mean she was free.

She was in the backyard swimming with her children and spending part of her vacation with them. When she told him she was unavailable, he tried to persuade her.

It would not take long, he said.

But she still refused.

That seemed to genuinely upset him.

His argument was simple: if she was already home, why couldn’t she spare a little time to help him?

Her answer was equally simple. She was spending time with her kids. Going to his place, checking the mailbox, and coming back would still take a chunk of her day.

And, in her mind, there was an obvious alternative.

He had neighbors.

Someone in his building could probably check the mailbox without turning it into a special trip for a friend who lived farther away.

He asked if she could do it the next day instead.

She told him she was not available for errands like that.

Being Off Work Is Not the Same as Being On Call

The disagreement seems to have been less about one mailbox than about expectations.

The woman had already helped him once. She did not mind doing favors when she genuinely could. What bothered her was the assumption that her vacation belonged to anyone who needed something.

That distinction is important in friendships.

Psychologist and workplace researcher Adam Grant has written about the importance of setting boundaries around time and availability, particularly because generous people can easily become overextended when others begin treating their willingness to help as an unlimited resource. He has also discussed how people often underestimate the value of protecting time for family, rest, and personal priorities. (adamgrant.net)

The broader point applies here even though this was not a workplace situation. A person’s time has value even when they are not being paid for it.

A day off can mean sleeping late, taking care of the house, playing with your children, going somewhere, doing absolutely nothing, or sitting in a pool for three hours.

None of those plans become less legitimate because someone else needs a favor.

The friend was genuinely recovering from a hospital stay, so his need for assistance was understandable. But needing help and being entitled to a particular person’s help are two different things.

A better approach would have been to ask rather than assume. If the woman said no, the next step should have been finding another option rather than trying to convince her that her own plans were not important enough.

Reddit Mostly Agreed With Her

[comment block]

Reddit overwhelmingly sided with the woman and gave her an NTA verdict.

Several commenters pointed out that she had already helped her friend by making a supermarket run. They understood why someone recovering from an illness might need assistance, but they did not believe that made her a personal assistant who had to respond to every request.

Others focused on the phrase “you’re home anyway.” One commenter argued that this attitude essentially tells someone that their own plans do not matter because they happen to be at home.

And plenty of people admitted they had learned the hard way not to advertise their days off at all.

One commenter shared a much more poignant story about helping a seriously ill friend with a ramp after initially saying no. That friend died unexpectedly only days later, leaving the commenter with a powerful reminder that sometimes a seemingly inconvenient favor can become a memory you treasure forever.

That perspective adds an interesting wrinkle.

Helping people can matter enormously.

But so can knowing when you simply cannot.

The Difference Between Kindness and Obligation

There is no reason to believe the friend was wrong for asking for help in the first place. Recovering from a hospital stay can make ordinary tasks surprisingly difficult.

The problem was what happened after the answer was no.

A healthy friendship should leave room for both people to have needs. Sometimes one person needs more help because of circumstances, but that does not erase the other person’s boundaries.

The woman was not refusing to help her friend at all. She had already done so.

She was simply saying that her time with her children mattered too.

That is not selfish.

If anything, one of the healthiest things about this situation is that she recognized her own limit before resentment completely took over. Doing every favor while quietly becoming angry rarely makes for a better friendship.

Sometimes “no” is what allows “yes” to remain something you can genuinely offer.

Here's how people reacted to the post:

Optimal-Spinach6974 − NTA. Glad you know how to say no.

Impressive-End241 − NTA. I can understand needing help getting medication from the pharmacy, or like you said, some stuff from the store, but you are not his personal assistant to...

Envelope_Torture − NTA. 1) Asking you to come by to check his mailbox is insane. WTF? Automatic no.

2) You have kids. 3) He didn't ask before hand and just assumed you would do it.

4) You already did him a favor and it seems like you were willing to help out with more reasonable requests. Dude is entitled as hell.

wreck_it_ralph_ − NTA Lesson learnt, don’t tell people your plans or days off as they will fill it with things that benefit them.

MollyOMalley99 − NTA. Your time is yours, and your free time does not belong to your friend's minor to-do list, regardless of whether they are recovering from a hospitalization.

"You are home anyway" is him saying that your wants and needs are unimportant to him. Spending time in a pool with your kids sounds more important to me.

tarahlynn − NTA but I've down right lied to my own loved ones so no one knows when I have a day off lol. Having total peace when I'm sleeping...

Oktodayithink − NTA. But I had a friend with ALS who would ask me to do favors for him. One day he asked me to come over at lunch so...

I was working. I said no. He asked again. I said no. He bribed me with his soup and I sighed and went over.

I helped him set up the ramp, it didn’t work, I got the soup and went home and had a great lunch. That was the last time I saw him...

So while yes it can be draining to help a friend in need, you don’t know if it will really matter if you go help .

trueduchess − Ask him why he finds it easier to ask you, who lives a distance away and involves an interruption of your holiday, and not ask a neighbour who...

fbombmom_ − NTA. He can ask whomever he planned on asking before he found out you were off.

ismathedog24 − NTA. Your friend seems to think “not working” means “available. ” It doesn’t.

You had plans with your kids, and you’re allowed to protect that time. You helped him Monday; you don’t owe him every favor he asks for afterward. His recovery doesn’t...

Final Thoughts

The friend was recovering, and it is understandable that he needed assistance. But the woman was not wrong for protecting her day off, especially when she had already helped him.

Being home does not mean being available.

Being a friend does not mean being on call.

And spending an afternoon in the pool with your kids is not somehow less important than checking someone else’s mailbox just because you are not sitting behind a desk.

Maybe the real lesson here is that favors work best when they are freely given. The moment someone starts treating your free time as something they automatically own, even a small request can become exhausting.

So no, she probably did not need to give up her afternoon.

She just needed to keep saying no without feeling guilty about it.
