Weekend Guests Ignore House Rules, Scare the Cat, Skip Cleanup, Then Wonder Why the Host Stops Calling

in Social Issues

Weekend trips with friends can reveal sides of people that casual dinners and game nights never show.

Sharing someone else’s home usually comes with a basic expectation of respect, especially when the hosts have clearly explained the rules beforehand.

One couple learned that after inviting newer friends to spend a weekend at a family cottage.

What began as a relaxed getaway quickly turned frustrating when one guest ignored repeated requests about shoes, dismissed concerns about the family cat, made snide comments about meals, and refused to help clean before leaving.

His girlfriend was not much more helpful, and by the end of the weekend the hosts felt more like staff than friends.

Afterward, the poster stopped accepting invitations from the pair, while her boyfriend continued seeing them socially.

Scroll down to see why she now wonders if cutting them off completely is an overreaction.

'AIO for cutting off a new friend after how he behaved at my boyfriend’s family cottage?'

My boyfriend and I, (both 34), invited a newer friend, “Jake,” and his

girlfriend, “Emily,” to my bf’ parents’ cottage for the weekend. We had

hung out before without issues. The cottage is essentially a country house,

and we also brought our cat, who has been going there since she was a

kitten. We checked beforehand that they were comfortable with her

coming, and they said they were excited.. The problems started almost immediately.

Jake repeatedly wore his shoes inside despite being asked multiple times

to remove them. At one point, he tracked mud and goose poop through

the house. When we reminded him again, he responded, “Yeah, whatever.”

We had divided up meals, with them preparing lunch and us handling

dinner the first day. We arrived around 5 p.m. after they had eaten fast

food and dessert on the way. Nobody was hungry, so we played board

games. Around 7, I offered to make dinner, but they wanted to eat the

lunch they had already prepared instead. We all agreed. After a bonfire and

s’mores, Emily complained around midnight that we never made dinner.

The next day, Jake made a snide comment about preparing dinner on time being “the proper thing to do.”

Despite saying they were fine with our cat, Jake sprayed her with a plant

mister when she went near the kitchen or their bedroom. She became so

scared that she spent most of the weekend hiding in our room. He also left

the screen door open one night and I caught her standing there looking

outside. When I asked him to keep the door closed for her safety, his response was, again, “Yeah, whatever.”

Jake also never helped clean. Emily loaded the dishwasher but didn’t turn it on and left the dirty pots and pans for us to scrub.

On our last day before leaving, my boyfriend and I vacuumed, washed

linens, took out the garbage, cleaned the fridge, and loaded the car. Jake

and Emily packed their things, abandoned food they didn’t want in the

fridge, and lay down on the couch for a nap. When we asked them to help, Jake said he was tired and wanted to lie with Emily. When we asked...

I found the entire weekend incredibly disrespectful, especially considering

they were guests in someone else’s family home, albeit a “cottage”.

Afterward, I stopped engaging with them and declined their invitations. My

boyfriend has attended a few events with them. Although he was also

annoyed by their behavior, he thinks I’m overreacting by not wanting to be friends anymore.

In my opinion, they showed their true colors by disrespecting someone

else’s home, belongings, and pet after being invited to share that space,

even after we addressed the issues multiple times. I don’t want friendships with people who act like that.. AIO?. EDIT Re. My bf

I have brought up many times that I have no interest in continuing a

friendship with them and if I were him, I wouldn't either. For whatever

reason he has not disclosed to me, he doesn't agree. Their behaviour at the

cottage did annoy him and he agrees he will never invite them anywhere

overnight again but they will still game together online and go to chess

nights together. I think my bf doesn't have many friends who share those

same interests so he hangs onto the ones who do and doesn't want to see

the negative side of them because they get along doing the fun stuff

together. I am more in the mindset of having quality friends.

Sometimes one bad weekend does not reveal that someone is a terrible person, but it can reveal that their idea of respect and consideration is fundamentally different from yours.

That distinction seems to be what matters most here.

The couple were not upset because Jake wore the wrong shoes once or because Emily forgot to turn on the dishwasher.

They watched several small boundaries get ignored, corrected the behavior repeatedly, and received the same dismissive response: “Yeah, whatever.”

By the end of the weekend, the issue had become a pattern rather than an isolated mistake.

The emotional dynamic is especially revealing because the guests were given clear expectations.

They knew about the cat beforehand, agreed to the meal arrangement, were asked several times about the shoes, and were reminded about keeping the door closed.

Yet each request seemed to be treated as an inconvenience. For the hosts, that can create a particular kind of resentment: the feeling that their effort is being taken for granted while the guests still expect hospitality.

There is also an interesting difference between the two partners. The boyfriend appears to be separating friendship compatibility from character compatibility.

He can acknowledge that Jake was an inconsiderate houseguest while still enjoying gaming and chess with him.

His girlfriend, meanwhile, appears to place greater weight on whether someone’s behavior fits her standards for close friendship.

Neither approach is inherently wrong. They simply have different thresholds for what makes someone worth keeping in their social circle.

The girlfriend does not need to prove that Jake and Emily are objectively bad people before deciding she does not want a close relationship with them. Friendship is voluntary.

If spending time with someone consistently leaves a person feeling disrespected, withdrawing from that friendship is a legitimate choice.

At the same time, she does not necessarily need her boyfriend to sever his friendships to validate her decision.

His experience of Jake can be different because he interacts with him in environments where the problematic behavior is less visible.

Online gaming and chess nights don’t require Jake to respect a cottage, care for a pet, or participate in household chores.

The healthiest solution may therefore be separate social boundaries. She can remain distant without demanding that her boyfriend do the same.

He can maintain his friendship while accepting that Jake and Emily will not be invited into their home or shared vacations again.

Sometimes a friendship does not need a dramatic ending.

It can simply move from “people we welcome into our lives” to “people my partner happens to know.”

And after a weekend like this, that distance may be exactly what allows everyone to move on without another confrontation.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters agreed that OP was not overreacting and argued that the couple’s behavior revealed their true character

Dg1316 − NOR. I would not want to be friends with people like that. I agree

it shows their true colors. Your bf can be friends with them if he wants but i

wouldn’t allow them to take advantage of you or disturb your peace like that again

SJoyD − NOR - I wouldn't be hanging with them again. I'd kind of be side

eyeing boyfriend about still wanting to be friends with them.

hafree27 − NOR This is a new friendship. They should still have their

courting manners on display. This behavior is so awful, so early- it’s

incredibly telling on the type of people they are. Especially him, but both.

shinyspacecat-stars − yeah no that is immediate grounds for ending a

friendship. that is ultimate disrespect. friendships are supposed to have a

basic level of respect, care, and comfort. alongside being able to make

enjoyable memories with them, depend on them for (certain) small things, and have someone to look to for help.

they don’t seem to offer any of those options or perks, so what’s even the

point of having them as friends? ? you’re not overreacting at all. you’re

respecting yourself and your boundaries and you have a certain level of respect you expect from friends. NOR.

The strongest reaction centered on the cat

InvisibleBlueRobot − The minute someone fucks with my cat, I'd take them

outside and explain they back the F off and it's not a joke.   They apologize

and grovel for forgiveness or they will experience the full wrath of me and

my wife.   Seriously through, I would have made them back the f__k out of the house remove their shoes and clean up- or leave.

I have no problem calling out distressful behavior.  The minute it impacts

the health and wellness of my family (and cats), it's a whole new level.   I'd

want nothing to do with them. They were sending a message and it's either aimed at you or you and your BF, but he's too dense to see it.

Prior_Flamingo_2276 − Leaving the door open for the cat is psychotic. I can

tolerate and excuse a lot of rudeness, but if you are mean to an animal, our

friendship is over. If you are mean to my pet, I will ruin your life. I think you are under-reacting.

SBixby21 − Wild to read people could act that way as a guest in someone

else’s family home. Miscommunication over the meals and chores, maybe I could see (though their behavior there was crazy, too).

But the cat stuff…I’m shocked you didn’t say that the cottage was a home

away from home for your cat and that they had no right to do anything at

all to her. I’m actually sort of shocked you weren’t more forceful in the

moment while they were ruining your trip, mistreating your family cottage, and mistreating your cat.

I’ve never had the misfortune of getting close to people who bring their

bad vibes around, but I can’t even imagine how you finished the weekend.

They sound very strange. I’m not saying you should have beat their asses,

but come on. You have to confront some of this stuff in the moment or ask them to leave and enjoy the rest of your trip.

This group thought OP was justified but too passive

Specialist-Wheel9013 − You’re not overreacting but you do have to learn to

open your mouth. There’s no reason they got through the entire weekend without being confronted on their s__t behavior.

fawningandconning − NOR. I think you really need to be more forceful

though, and a bit of a united front. I have travelled with awful people and it

was a friendship ender. Have you actually shared with them how hurt this made you?

Usual_Bumblebee_8274 − You didnt really “address” the issues though. You

just pointed them out. I would have told him if he walks through w shoes

again-they need to leave. Same with every bit of push back. That’s not a

friend. The comment “albeit a “cottage” still has me rolling. Did you offer

him slippers or something (he may have n__ty feet or socks & is embarrassed).

These ppl are not “friends”. They aren’t even “friendly”. They are rude &

self absorbed. But they would have been out the moment they messed w

my pet. That’s a step above messing w someone’s kid. Why does your bf even want to be around ppl like this?

One bad weekend can reveal a lot about people, especially when the same disrespect keeps happening after clear requests to stop.

Shoes, messes, passive-aggressive comments, frightening the cat, and refusing to help clean all added up to something bigger than ordinary houseguest awkwardness.

The poster doesn’t have to keep investing in a friendship that already feels draining, even if her boyfriend still enjoys them in limited settings.

Do you think she’s overreacting by cutting them off, or simply choosing higher-quality friendships? Could you stay friends after a weekend like this?
