Woman Cuts Off Brothers After They Celebrate Mom’s Birthday Without Her, Then Ask Her to Pay the Ride Home

in Social Issues

Family conflicts can be some of the hardest to deal with because the people who hurt us are often the same people we still love.

When years of resentment build up, even one event can feel like the final breaking point.

The original poster (OP) has spent years supporting her family, including becoming her mother’s primary caregiver while receiving little help from her siblings.

After finally asking her brothers to share some responsibility, OP felt abandoned when one refused and the other contributed only a small amount.

Over time, tensions grew, relationships became distant, and OP began feeling excluded from important family moments.

The situation reached a breaking point when OP discovered that her brothers had celebrated their mother’s birthday without inviting her or her young daughter, then asked OP to help arrange transportation afterward.

Now OP is questioning whether cutting ties completely is justified or if she is letting years of hurt influence her decision.

Scroll down to see what Reddit thinks OP should do.

Woman who cared for her mother alone reaches her breaking point

not the actual photo

'Aita for not letting my siblings use my Uber account for my mom from a party I wasn't invited to?'

I (39F) have two older brothers: Sean and Victor. I have a 5yo, Victor has a

4yo, and Sean has two boys (14 & 9).

Our mom can't work, so she lived with me for 8 years while I was her sole

caregiver without any help. After I had my kid, I needed my own space. I

asked my brothers to chip in for one year so Mom could get her own place

until her pension kicked in at 65. Victor and his wife refused. Sean gave

$500/month, while I paid $2,000/month just to move her out.

A year later, my husband and I bought a house. Because Victor hadn't

talked to us in a year, avoided us at gatherings, we didn't use him/his wife

as our real estate agent. They were pissed, saying they could’ve used the

commission money to pay their share for Mom. Because of this, they

skipped my wedding and didn't speak to us for two years.

Victor’s wife is extremely controlling. She forced him to cut off all his

friends and monitors every call he makes. Recently, Sean’s wife and Victor’s

wife have gotten super close, bonding over the idea that Sean wouldn't

have had to pay $500/month if I’d just used Victor for the house. Since

then, Sean’s wife barely speaks to me.

I’ve always gone to their kids' birthdays, but Victor’s family always declines

mine. At a picnic in July, Victors wife deliberately ignored me and my

daughter.

This all came to a head for me this past weekend on sunday. Sean texted

me at 6 PM asking for my Uber account to send Mom home. Turns out both

families were at Victor’s celebrating Mom’s birthday from 2 to 8 PM (they

called Mom at 11 AM to get ready).

They completely excluded me and my 5-year-old from her own

grandmother's birthday, and then had the nerve to expect me to pay for

Mom’s ride home. When I called him out, Sean claimed it was a "last-minute

gathering.". Sean always chooses Victor, and I’m sick of the disrespect

toward me and my kid.

WIBTA if I completely cut both of them off, I absolutely love my nephews

and my 5 year old love them too along with Sean and his wife or am I

overreacting?

Family relationships can become the most painful when the people we expect to stand beside us are the ones who make us feel invisible.

In this situation, OP is not only reacting to one missed birthday invitation. She is carrying years of exhaustion, resentment, and hurt from feeling like she carried the responsibility for their mother alone while her brothers stayed distant.

The birthday gathering appears to have reopened an old wound: the feeling that she is expected to provide support when needed but is excluded when it comes to being included as family.

The emotional conflict here is complicated because OP’s anger exists alongside genuine love.

She does not seem to want revenge or to punish her brothers simply for disappointing her.

She is struggling with the fact that she loves her nephews, values her relationship with her mother, and still wants connection, but repeatedly feels like she is the only one making sacrifices.

For many caregivers, the hardest part is not the work itself but feeling that others only recognize their contributions when they need something.

A different perspective is that family conflicts involving caregiving often create invisible scorecards.

OP may see years of unpaid caregiving and financial sacrifice as proof that she was abandoned, while her brothers may have created their own explanations for their choices.

That does not excuse their behavior, but it shows why these conflicts can become deeply rooted.

People often defend themselves by focusing on a single disagreement, such as the real estate situation, while ignoring the larger history that caused the relationship to break down.

This insight is important for OP because cutting off family completely may bring temporary relief, but it may also create grief over losing relationships she still values.

Instead of viewing the choice as only “forgive everything” or “remove everyone,” she may consider creating distance with clear limits.

She can decide how much emotional energy, financial support, and access to her life she is willing to give while still leaving room for healthier interactions in the future.

OP’s pain appears to come from feeling taken for granted, not simply from missing one event.

The next step may not be deciding whether her brothers deserve forgiveness, but deciding what kind of relationship protects her peace while honoring the love she still has for her nephews and mother.

Sometimes stepping back is not about ending a family bond; it is about refusing to keep carrying it alone.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters believed OP was being treated unfairly after years of financial support

peaches_and_drama − NTA why didn’t your mother call and invite you to

her birthday party especially after you paid $24k over a year for cover her

living expenses?

Lillie-Bee − So you paid 2k, Sean gave 500, and Victor didn’t pay anything

yet somehow you are the bad one! In fact, you say Victor and his wife

refused. So, a YEAR later, after not even speaking to you, they actually

think you believe they would have used any house commission to help?

Nothing in their behavior even suggests that would have happened.

And then said Sean wouldn’t have had to pay 500? Still nothing said about

relieving your 2k burden. Sounds like your family wants to drain your

pockets. Nobody would blame you from walking away from such selfish

people.

LibraryMouse4321 − NTA. You helped your mom all those years without

help from your selfish AH brothers, and then paid a lot of money to

continue supporting her. You should definitely not be paying for her ride

home from a party for her that you and your child weren’t invited to. I’m

not getting any warm fuzzies about your mom either.

She has taken advantage of you and allowed one son to not help and one

to barely help. Cut them all off.

These commenters supported cutting contact or reducing involvement

Substantial_Rub_209 − NTA good riddance to all of them.

opshleen − NTA. Go no contact and don’t look back.

Anxious-Routine-5526 − NTA.

Regain your peace and cut these people out.

SomewhereMammoth4613 − I’d cut them all off but even if I didn’t, I’d cut

off any financial contribution. It’s their turn.

These commenters focused on the emotional aspect of the situation

PMme_ifyouneedtotalk − I don't think they actually needed your Uber

account. I think they needed a reason to contact you to tell you about this

birthday party that you weren't invited to, and your Uber account was the

perfect way in. Your siblings WANT to hurt you. This was 100% meant to

make you feel this way.

They were very intentional in making sure you knew you weren't invited to

the family birthday party for Mom. There would be no debate in my mind

here about your next steps. They let you handle EIGHT YEARS of solo

caregiving for mom, never once stepping in or asking how they can help.

When you finally did ask for help, barely any help happened.

They get mad that you didn't reach out and contact them for them to make

more money, but they never cared that you have spent far more than any

commission a house would have made them. If your mom has any

inheritance to give, I would see about becoming her power of attorney or

making sure they can't mess with her will.

You said she is mentally unaware of things sometimes and seeing how all

their behavior revolves around money, I wouldn't be surprised if they try to

manipulate that. After that, cut contact with them, or at least go low contact.

Kids get vibes, they know negative and positive energy, so your daughter

will feel your tension around them, even if she loves hanging out with

them. It's better for her to show her healthy relationships you have. Good

luck with this whole mess. It's so unfortunate when it's family who are assholes.

I hope your husband is a great support for you and helps you navigate all this.

Party-Mud8461 − Oh Love. Your mother didn't call you to invite you and

your child to the birthday party? She didn't call you herself to ask you for

the Uber? Not sure what that dynamic is between you and you mother, but

I'm not sure what mom would allow her children to skip on monumental

events like the sibling's wedding.

It sounds like the drama you and your sibling are orbiting in, your mom is the nucleus.

These commenters argued that responsibility should shift back to OP’s brothers

Dark-Twisty91 − NTA Cut off your brothers, and if your mom knew about

this and still excepts you to foot the bill, cut her off too and let your

brothers take care of her.

Accomplished-Emu-591 − NTA. You have given her plenty in the past year.

She didn't need an Uber from you for an event you knew nothing about.

Your brothers can take care of her transportation from THEIR party.

After years of carrying the responsibility of caring for their mother largely alone, the OP feels pushed aside by the same family members who benefited from her sacrifices.

The birthday gathering became the final straw, especially when she was expected to arrange the ride home after being excluded.

Some may argue cutting off family could hurt the children’s relationships, while others feel repeated disrespect deserves boundaries.

Should OP walk away completely, or leave the door open for her nephews? How would you handle this family fallout? Share your thoughts below!
