Woman Glitter-Bombs Roommate’s Humidifier After She Keeps Stealing Clothes, and Chaos Fills the Apartment

in Social Issues

Roommate problems can start small, but repeated boundary violations have a way of turning everyday life into a constant source of frustration.

When polite requests stop working, some people eventually decide to get creative.

The original poster (OP) says her roommate, Kayla, repeatedly borrowed her clothes without permission, even after multiple warnings and attempts to lock her belongings away.

After reaching her limit, OP came up with a glitter-filled revenge plan involving Kayla’s favorite humidifier.

The result was messy, sparkly, and impossible to ignore.

Now, Kayla is furious and their mutual friends are divided over whether OP’s response was hilarious or completely unhinged. Read on to see if Reddit thinks she went too far.

not the actual photo

'AITA for putting glitter in my roommate’s humidifier after she kept “borrowing” my clothes without asking?'

I (22F) live with my roommate, let's call her Kayla the Kleptomaniac (23F), who has a chronic

illness called Touching My Stuff Without Permission.

No matter how many times I’ve asked, begged, or written post-it notes in increasingly

aggressive fonts, she keeps “borrowing” my clothes. Not just hoodies, either — I’m talking full

fits, down to my custom bra with my initials on it.. So I got petty. And glittery.

She has this giant pink humidifier that she’s obsessed with. Think glowing orb of aesthetic

health vibes. I unscrewed the top and dumped an entire vial of ultra-fine cosmetic glitter into

the water. I figured, best-case scenario: she sparkles like a Twilight vampire. Worst-case: the

humidifier dies and she stops living like she’s in a Pinterest board.

She turned it on. Within hours, our entire apartment looked like Tinker Bell exploded. Her cat

was shimmering. Our couch had become disco-themed. I was proud. She? Was not.

She accused me of trying to “poison” her sinuses. (Glitter is non-toxic, I checked.) Now she

won’t speak to me, and she posted on Instagram that I’m a “domestic terrorist.”. Our mutual

friends are split. Half think I’m a genius. The other half think I’ve gone feral.. AITA?. Edit: It

worked, she has left my things alone

Yet another edit: You guys keep on saying to just look the door. I DID. Several times. Changed

it to a lock and key. Then changed those locks because she picked them. "Just locking the

door" did nothing.

UPDATE: I changed the locks several times. I have talked to her a lot. Almost twice everyday.

The cat is fine, he got a little bit of sparkles on her tail

For those who think it's fake, I wish it was, my stuff is also now covered in glitter, but I had to

do something to get her attention. It did and now she's not taking my things anymore,

so it worked.

She bought things that are similar to mine, and I even gave her a gift card to the store I buy

my things from. I haven't had to change any locks since. It definetly (I can't spell) caught her

attention and she promised she wouldn't do it again.

Few things are more frustrating than repeatedly asking someone to respect a simple boundary and watching them ignore it anyway.

When another person keeps touching, taking, or using belongings without permission, the anger often stops being about the objects themselves.

It becomes about feeling powerless in your own home.

In OP’s situation, the roommate’s behavior had clearly gone beyond occasionally borrowing a hoodie.

Kayla was taking clothing repeatedly, even personal items, despite locks, requests, and written reminders.

That pattern explains why OP eventually wanted consequences strong enough to make the behavior stop.

The glitter stunt came from accumulated resentment and the feeling that ordinary boundaries had failed.

However, the retaliation also affected the shared apartment, the furniture, and even the roommate’s cat. That transformed a legitimate grievance into a much messier conflict.

A fresh perspective is that revenge often feels most appealing when someone has stopped believing normal enforcement will work.

OP had tried asking, locking the door, and replacing locks, yet Kayla apparently continued finding ways around them.

Under those circumstances, retaliation can create a temporary sense of control.

Psychologically, though, there is an important difference between a boundary and a punishment.

A boundary protects one person’s space. Revenge deliberately creates discomfort for the other person.

That insight validates OP’s anger without necessarily validating the glitter.

Kayla had repeatedly demonstrated that she did not respect OP’s ownership or privacy.

But conflict researchers also describe retaliation as something that can create an escalating cycle: one person feels wronged, strikes back, and the other responds more aggressively because they now feel victimized too.

Glitter in a humidifier may have finally stopped the clothing theft, but it also created potential damage and introduced material into shared air that OP could not completely control.

The more durable solution is not finding an even better prank. It is making continued access impossible.

That may mean documenting the theft, involving the landlord or supported housing management if applicable, keeping valuables elsewhere, or ultimately ending the living arrangement.

OP was justified in reaching a breaking point. Kayla was not entitled to her clothes simply because they shared an address. But successful retaliation is still retaliation.

The real victory is not making a boundary violator sparkle; it is reaching a point where they no longer have access to violate the boundary at all.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters celebrated OP as a hilarious “feral genius” for finally enforcing her boundaries

-FlyingFox- − LMAO! I’m going to say NTA. I think you are an evil genius.

BellLilly − Be FERAL! The world NEEDS MORE feral women

FanAlternative7059 − Own it: you are a feral genius. Keep up the good work! She was warned

to leave your clothes alone. And borrowing undergarments?

Glittering-List-465 − Queen of the Feral!!

These commenters found the revenge extreme but funny and wondered whether it finally stopped the borrowing

Either_Coconut − Ooooo, naughty naughty OP! But I can't stop laughing long enough to cast

a vote; is that wrong?

Thisis_it_415 − You made my day and I was laughing. Maybe a little extreme, but necessary in a way.

IntrepidAssistant840 − At first I thought you would be, but you got her attention. Has she

touched your stuff since?

These commenters viewed the glitter attack as scorched-earth revenge that also backfired on OP

Appropriate_Stick678 − Omfg. That is freaking hilarious. I would officially refer to that as a

scorched earth move. I have to give you a YTA because glitter is evil, but I respect your

frustration. Next time put some itching powder or something unpleasant on something she

typically “borrows” from you. That is a better natural consequence.

DoyoudotheDew − You glittered yourself.

These commenters warned that airborne glitter could harm everyone in the apartment, including OP

Timely-Researcher264 − Ultra fine cosmetic glitter is made of tiny particles of plastic.

Sometimes has aluminum. Or copper. Non toxic on your SKIN. But you’ve aerosolized that

stuff and spread it all over your apartment. You, your roommate, and the cat have all

breathed it in. I think it’s safe to say it was never designed to be in your lungs or nasal passages.

I get that your roommate is incredibly annoying. But I hope you’re just telling stories here

because you’ve potentially caused physical harm to all 3 of you. If you don’t believe me,

google the impacts of inhaling fine glitter.

Here’s a preview “While glitter itself is generally considered inert, some glitters contain

materials like microplastics that, when inhaled, can degrade and release harmful chemicals

into the lungs and potentially throughout the body. ” If the glitter contains copper particles, it

can k__l you. 100% the cat has licked itself clean. So check carefully what that glitter was made of.

concaveUsurper − ESH, if only because that poor cat. Glitter can cause severe damage to eyes

even if it's super fine. Don't mess with glitter. Plus, hope you didn't like your security deposit

if you had one. She shouldn't be taking anything of yours.

Why didn't you either lock up your stuff or ask your landlord for permission to put on a new

locking door handle?

ConfidantLioness − YES This is a 2fer. She's an AH for wearing your clothes and underwear.

YUKK As far as the glitter? YOU ARE THE AH. .. WTAF is wrong with you? ? YOU DID POISON

HER, HER FLOOF AND YOURSELF! Inhaling anything other than oxygen is bad, VERY BAD. .. If

something happens and any one of you cannot breathe. It will be thanks to you.

Move, lock your door, closet or whatever. ✌🏻

These commenters focused on the cat and condemned putting an innocent animal at risk

particularlynosey − I was on your side- until you mentioned the cat- glitter is very harmful to

cats, can cause multiple problems with their lungs, eyes- you name it! She may charge you vet bills

frog_admirer − YTA for getting glitter on a cat. That's very dangerous!

stinkbloss0m − YTA. here's why. f__k her, but not the cat. you put the cat at risk. the cat will

ingest the sparkles that sit on its fur because it will lick itself. if you clean the cat, and the cat

sits down on sparkly floor, it will lick its b__t eventually and the same thing will happen.

you put a cat at risk of ingesting small particles. that wasn't fair. cat also lives there an cat did

not take your stuff :( if not for the cat, i'd have been ok w/ this lol. as long as no one in the

periphery/fall out zone has a health issue.

OP’s roommate had one very serious habit: treating other people’s belongings like a free clothing subscription service.

After repeated requests failed, OP decided to respond with a little chaos of her own, turning her roommate’s beloved humidifier into a glitter explosion that transformed their apartment into a sparkly disaster zone.

While some people saw it as a hilarious act of revenge, others questioned whether damaging someone’s property was the right way to handle the situation.

In the end, the glitter apparently worked, and the unwanted borrowing stopped. Do you think OP’s petty revenge was deserved, or did she cross a line? Share your thoughts below!
