Woman Meets Husband’s Best Friend’s Girlfriend Once and Already Can’t Stand Her

Not everyone you meet will be someone you naturally like, and that is perfectly normal. But when the reason involves how someone treats service workers, a seemingly small disagreement can suddenly reveal a much bigger difference in values.

The OP recently met her husband’s best friend’s new girlfriend for the first time after the couple had been dating for several months. The introduction already felt slightly strange, but she tried not to judge too quickly.

Later, however, the conversation turned to an incident involving the friend’s mother and a fast-food order that had been prepared incorrectly. Rather than returning to the original location, the mother went to another branch and demanded that they remake it.

The OP and her husband found the situation confusing, but the new girlfriend strongly defended the mother’s behavior and insisted that different franchise locations should fix one another’s mistakes. With more than 15 years of restaurant experience, the OP found that attitude particularly concerning. Read on to see why this first impression has left her feeling so uncomfortable.

not the actual photo

'My husband's BFF finally got a girlfriend & I hate her'

I'm glad he's happy, but I'm not looking forward to hangouts in the future if this relationship lasts.

We just met her for the first time the other day, they've been dating a couple months but we don't live close anymore.

Right from the introduction she just kind of rubbed me the wrong way, & I'm finding it's hard to explain…

Almost like she was acting as though she's been in the picture for years and we were the newcomers? It was weird, but I tried not to let it really...

What did get to me was later, my husband's friend was describing something his mom did recently

[she got food from a fast food restaurant drive-through, drove down the road and realized her order was incorrect…

And she went to a completely different restaurant location to complain about her food and demand it remade, which they refused.

Husband's friend had brought this up because he, like we, were confused as hell why his mom thought going

to a completely different restaurant to fix her food was the right option.

But new girlfriend is on mom's side, and was adamant that restaurant franchisees

have agreements to fix food made at another store because "it's the same brand".

I have over 15 years experience in the restaurant industry, fast food and otherwise, a

nd NEVER have I ever seen a restaurant be willing to fix the mistakes of another location as policy.

She was adamant that it's how it should be, & as she kept going on

I realized she's exactly the kind of person that would scream at a worker over ketchup or something.

I do NOT like or respect people who treat service workers poorly........

I'm grateful to not have to spend lots of time with her, and I'll be civil during hangouts for the sake of my husband and his buddy.

Grateful for the space to vent here, my flabbers are still ghasted but I didn't want to talk my husband's ear off about it!

It can be surprisingly difficult when someone new enters a close social circle and immediately feels wrong, especially when there isn’t one dramatic offense to point to.

The OP seems to be reacting to a combination of impressions: the girlfriend’s apparent familiarity from the moment they met, her strong defense of behavior the OP considers unreasonable, and the fear that those attitudes may eventually become a recurring source of tension.

The restaurant disagreement clearly became the tipping point. The OP has spent more than 15 years working in restaurants and therefore has firsthand experience with how separate locations generally handle mistakes.

Hearing the girlfriend confidently insist that another location should remake an incorrect order made the OP question not only her understanding of restaurant policies but also what her attitude toward service workers might be like. For someone who strongly values respectful treatment of employees, that distinction matters.

There is also a psychological phenomenon worth considering: first impressions tend to organize later information. Once someone feels slightly uncomfortable around a new person, subsequent disagreements can become evidence supporting that initial impression.

Psychologists have studied this through concepts such as confirmation bias and the “halo” or “horn” effects, where an early positive or negative impression can influence how later behavior is interpreted.

Psychologist Daniel Kahneman’s research on judgment and cognitive biases helps explain why people can become attached to an initial interpretation even when the available evidence is limited.

His work demonstrates how quickly people form intuitive judgments and how those judgments can influence subsequent reasoning. The Nobel Prize summarizes his influential research on judgment and decision-making.

That doesn’t mean the OP’s discomfort is imaginary. It simply means there are two separate questions here: Is the girlfriend actually someone who mistreats service workers, and does the OP like her?

The evidence for the first is currently thin. She defended a questionable position about a restaurant complaint, but that alone doesn’t establish that she screams at employees or behaves badly toward them. She could genuinely misunderstand how franchise locations operate and still be a perfectly decent person.

The other issue is more subjective. The OP doesn’t have to like everyone her husband’s best friend dates. A close friendship doesn’t automatically create an obligation for every partner in the group to form the same relationship with the new girlfriend. Civility is enough.

There is also something worth examining in the description that she was “acting as though she’s been in the picture for years.” New partners sometimes behave that way because they are nervous, naturally outgoing, or trying to establish belonging quickly. What feels presumptuous to one person can feel friendly and confident to another.

The healthiest approach is therefore probably the one the OP has already chosen: stay civil, don’t manufacture closeness, and wait for more evidence. She doesn’t need to decide after one meeting that this woman is terrible, nor does she need to convince herself that she likes her.

If future interactions reveal a consistent pattern of belittling workers, demanding special treatment, or creating conflict, then the initial instinct will have stronger evidence behind it. If that doesn’t happen, the OP may discover that the first impression was simply a mismatch in personalities.

And honestly, there is a useful middle ground between “I love her” and “I hate her.”

Sometimes the appropriate relationship with a friend’s new girlfriend is simply: “She’s not my person, but I can be perfectly pleasant when we’re all together.” That is more than enough.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors felt OP was judging the girlfriend far too harshly over minor issues

robilar − Honestly, seems like maybe it's worth doing some self-reflection;

1. "acting as though she's been in the picture for years and we were the newcomers" is shorthand for your ego being bruised.

I know it can be hard when friendships wane as people get more invested in romantic partnerships,

but it is normal and reasonable for a couple to act like each others' priority and for your friend's girlfriend to speak like she belongs . .. because she does.

You should probably do some more work to figure out why you are upset, rather than just leave it at blaming her for your discomfort.

2. "new girlfriend is on mom's side, and was adamant that restaurant franchisees have agreements to fix food made at another store

because "it's the same brand"" this isn't an unreasonable assumption, and you having fifteen years of experience in the industry

makes you a subject matter expert, but does not make her an jerk for not having your experience. Should franchises support each other?

Maybe. I mean, you can return a toy to any Walmart, so why shouldn't you be able to get a replacement box of nuggets from any McDonald's?

You know that isn't how it usually works, logistically, but she's not *incorrect* that it's plausible, and maybe even better practices than what happens now.

At the very least it doesn't make sense to denigrate her for that position;

would you also lambast someone who thinks restaurants should stop outsourcing wages to customers via the pretense of gratuities?

3. "I realized she's exactly the kind of person that would scream at a worker over ketchup or something.

I do NOT like or respect people who treat service workers poorly" ... except, she didn't.

You made an assumption about her because you already dislike her and are now judging her, and treating her, like she did the thing you fictionally attached to her.

You don't have to do anything different you're the boss of you but for what it's worth there's decent evidence in your narrative

that the problem here is in your own schema, and if you continue down this path then the distance that inevitably comes

between your couple and theirs will be at least to some meaningful degree your fault.

kwonhoshi − nothing you've talked about in this post is making this person sound as horrible as you are claiming she is,

you honestly are just sounding really judgmental.

As for the fast food issue, seems like she's just misinformed, which I don't see how that makes her a horrible person.

If her experience is from somewhere like Starbucks, where they absolutely will remake drinks originally made at another location

(and this happens pretty often tbh), I could see how she might not realize that other restaurants don't necessarily operate the same way.

Not to mention, she's not even the one who went to another restaurant for a remake,

yet you're immediately jumping to conclusions that she screams at service workers.

Lonely-Illustrator64 − I’ll be honest this all seems very minuscule.

You’re assuming she’d be rude to service workers just because she said she thinks the mom is right?

That’s quite the leap- as other comments have pointed out she likely is confused with big box store policies

and some places like Starbucks will actually remake items that were made wrong at another location.

This is such a weird hill to die on and judge someone over.

FungusGnatHater − She's treating new people like new people, how terrible. You assume she will scream at a worker over ketchup.

It seems like you are reaching for reasons to not like someone you decided not to like for other reasons that you won't talk about.

Ncat138 − You just met her for the first time. FFS. Chill.

InfamousAd8543 − What a benign interaction to hate somebody over.

These commenters said she was likely just confused about restaurant versus retail policies

PeoniesNLilacs − She’s getting this policy mixed up with retail big-box stores. It’s not a restaurant policy I’ve ever known of. If it is, it’s news to me.

CandidProgrammer6067 − I know it's just a vent but, your friend probably talked about you all

and so when she met you it may have felt like she knew you already and was comfortable. It's a personality thing as well.

The food thing, meh. I see her reasoning but that doesn't mean it should be done.

A fast food isn't like returning an item of clothing from a retail shop but it isn't the end of the world.

In conclusion, you should give her another chance. Nobody's perfect.

These commenters joked that the friend may be drawn to women with difficult personalities

Apprehensive-Use3519 − he’s going to marry a woman crazy like his mom

Pinchaser71 − All you have to do is respectfully tolerate this woman for sake of the friendship.

My bestie is married to a complete whack job! She has the intelligence of a parsnip and she’s just way out there in her own world.

She’s nothing like him. That said, he loves her and she makes him happy.

As good best friend I am happy for him he found someone that makes him happy.

When I visit him I don’t go out of my way to socialize with her but I also don’t ignore her.

She’s not my type of person but I’m not the one in the relationship with her, he is.

I’m not there to change his mind or treat her badly. Again, I respectfully tolerate her and move on continuing my life long friendship with him.

Besides, he has to wake up next to her every morning, I don’t, so why should I care?

Was the poster picking up on a legitimate personality clash, or did one irritating conversation trigger an unfair judgment? How many meetings should someone get before a first impression becomes a fair conclusion?
