Woman Waits Five Hours for an MRI, Then Discovers the Hospital Already Diagnosed Her Without Seeing Her

Waiting for a medical appointment can test anyone’s patience, especially when minutes turn into hours without a clear explanation.

Most people understand that hospitals get busy, but seeing inaccurate information appear in your medical record while you are still sitting in the waiting room can make the situation feel much more serious.

One patient arrived early for a scheduled MRI and ended up waiting nearly five hours before checking the hospital app.

To their surprise, the system showed that the appointment had already happened, complete with medical notes and a diagnosis.

Frustrated and confused, the patient demanded answers, only to learn that another test was required before the MRI could proceed.

By then, patience was running dangerously thin, and the conversation with staff became heated.

Scroll down to see what happened during the seven-hour hospital visit and why the patient later wondered if the reaction went too far.

An MRI patient waits for hours, then discovers the hospital app says she was already seen

'Was I the hospital Karen?'

I had an appointment for an MRI so I showed up half an hour early. We sat

there in the waiting room as neatly no one was called back for their appointments or to the ER.

And we waited. And waited. We checked to see if they were going to call us

back soon. They said soon. So we waited. And waited...

It was about 4 hours past my appointment time when I decided to check

the hospital app. I can see appointments on it, contact my doctor's, see test

results. I was worried I had the date wrong. I didn't. I was there at the right

place and time. It was nearing 5 hours but the app... said I'd already been

seen, doctors notes and a diagnosis were already entered.

I lost it. I asked my husband to request to speak to someone. When

someone called me back, it was for blood work that was required before they could do the MRI.

I may have made a scene. I yelled about the preemptive diagnosis and false

information. I refused to do the blood work and demanded they just do the

MRI. The nurse said they couldn't do that just in case. My kidneys needed to be cleared for the test first.

I mimed taking my kidneys out and said, "here take them. Now can we do

the test?" She talked me into the blood test after a few minutes though I

was fuming. I bit my tongue and just went along with it. By the time I left,

we'd been there for 7 hours.. I still feel bad about blowing up, but I think I was right. So. Am I the Karen?

Few things make people feel more powerless than depending on a medical system while having no idea what is happening to them.

The patient arrived early for an MRI, waited nearly five hours without meaningful progress, and then discovered an electronic record suggesting the visit had already occurred, complete with notes and a diagnosis.

That would be unsettling even without the extraordinary delay.

By the time someone finally explained that blood work was needed before proceeding, frustration had accumulated into anger.

Emotionally, this looks less like someone becoming furious over a blood test and more like uncertainty overload.

For hours, the patient kept receiving some version of “soon” while watching nothing happen.

Finding unexpected documentation in the portal then introduced a more serious fear: if the record was inaccurate, what else might be wrong?

The sarcastic comment about removing their kidneys was inappropriate toward the nurse, but it came after several failures had already eroded the patient’s confidence.

There is also an important perspective from the medical side. The nurse did not invent the kidney concern simply to create another obstacle.

Depending on the type of MRI contrast being considered and a patient’s risk factors, kidney-function screening can be medically appropriate.

The patient had legitimate reasons to challenge the apparently premature diagnosis and seven-hour process.

AHRQ even notes that patients discovering inaccurate information in electronic medical records is a recognized source of concern and distress.

But being justified in demanding answers does not automatically justify yelling at the staff member standing in front of them.

So this is less “Karen versus innocent hospital” than two separate issues.

The hospital owed the patient accurate documentation, realistic updates, and a timely explanation of the required testing.

The patient, meanwhile, could acknowledge that the nurse became the target of anger generated by a much larger system.

A useful next step would be a factual written complaint requesting an explanation for the record entries and extraordinary delay.

That protects future patients more effectively than another confrontation and allows the patient to apologize for the yelling without apologizing for insisting that something was seriously wrong.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These Redditors said the hospital failed, but yelling at staff and refusing care was still wrong

Dazeydevyne − I understand why you were upset, but why not ask about

the delay when you were an hour past your time? Or even 2? Why, when

you found out an error had been made, did you "lose it" and make your husband do the legwork?

Again, I GET why you'd be frustrated, but I'm sure a simple "hey, I'm not

sure what's happened, but I've been waiting a long time and just noticed

that the app says I was already seen. Can we figure out what's going on and

get me looked at? " "Oh, you need some blood work done?

Shoot, I wasn't expecting that, but you ARE the professionals, so let's just

get it done so I can get out of here. And perhaps a conversation later on

about how the mistake was made that had me waiting so long? Can you

make sure I have the contact info for management or your tech team so I can chat with them about this? "

Dwillow1228 − You could’ve done so many things to make this better.

Yelling at someone that has absolutely no control what happened to you is

most definitely a Karen thing to do. That person did not cause your issue.

12345vzp − Oh boy, yes, definitely a Karen I'm afraid :( Your wait time was

ridiculous! as was the doctor notes mishap, but making a scene and

refusing the necessary blood test puts you in the wrong.

eatingganesha − yep, you are. sorry but you handled that poorly and took it

out on a nurse who was actively trying to help you. Only a Karen would sit

there for so many hours, build up resentment and then anger, and then

take it out on the innocent person trying to meet your needs.

These commenters were baffled that anyone would sit quietly for nearly five hours without demanding answers sooner

Ntsocial − Why on earth did you wait for five hours

AcademicContract − You have a lot more patience than I do. I never would have sat there for 5 hours, period.

These users were alarmed by incorrect charting and urged formal complaints or record correction

GhostGirl32 − NTK; they input data into YOUR chart that was NOT yours.

That's something to take all the way up the chain because either they're

faking it for your records or theyre giving you someone elses' results.

richard-bachman − NTK. The hospital messed up bigtime. Confusing one

patient for another is a NEVER event. They put someone else’s test results

in your portal. Major HIPAA violation. I know you made a stink in person,

but you should also be calling the corporate office to file an official complaint.

One_Psychology_3431 − You weren't, that was handled horribly by the

hospital and charting should never be done before the test. Crazy!

amanda10271 − I would have taken screenshots. Contacted my insurance

company and an attorney. These “medical professionals” are not working

with your best interests in mind if they have already provided a diagnosis

and physicians notes for a visit and testing that had not yet taken place.

You need to find a new doctor, hospital, etc. and report these “professionals” to the state licensing board.

Sheeshka49 − Not a Karen. I’m really concerned that your medical records

were mishandled. You need to speak with the doctor who ordered the MRI

and tell them what happened to make sure the records are corrected and

the doctor gets the right report. This could have serious consequences!

Seven hours at the hospital would test anyone’s patience, especially after discovering the system already showed an examination, notes, and a diagnosis before the MRI had even happened.

The kidney check may have been medically necessary, but that doesn’t erase the communication failures that pushed the poster over the edge.

Still, yelling at the nurse complicates an otherwise understandable complaint.

Do you think the outburst was justified after hours of waiting and inaccurate records, or did the poster become the “Karen” once she started shouting? How would you have handled it?
