Cousin Tries to Cancel Her Wedding Cake as a “Prank,” but the Bakery’s Safe Word Ruins Everything

Wedding planning already comes with enough stress without someone secretly trying to sabotage the day.

What one person calls a prank can quickly become a serious problem when deposits, vendors, and months of preparation are involved.

The original poster (OP) thought a strange phone call from her bakery had been resolved when staff told her someone had tried to cancel her wedding cake without the required security word.

She assumed that was the end of it until her mother revealed what had actually happened.

A young cousin had been calling local wedding vendors and pretending to be OP in an attempt to cancel her orders for fun.

Read on to see how close the prank came to ruining part of the wedding and why the plan failed.

not the actual photo

'The one where my cousin almost cancelled my cake order as a "prank"?'This happened a few weeks ago, but it didn't occur to me that it would

qualify as "wedding drama" because it got resolved quickly. That is until my

mom let me in on what happened later on.

I pre-ordered my wedding cake from a local bakery a few months ago.

About two weeks before the Big Day, the bakery called me up and let me

know that someone tried to cancel my order.

I don't know if its the same for every bakery, but the one I went with

requires that you have to have a "safe word" on file. That way if you cancel,

the bakery can confirm it by matching the "safe word." No safe word, no

cancellation. If that's not clear enough, let me know. But basically, they've

had too many issues with disgruntled in-laws that they had to put that

policy in place.

In my case, someone called the bakery to try and cancel my order on my

behalf but didn't have the safe word. I made it clear that I never approved

this and everything got resolved in one call.

Cut to my wedding day when my mom said that she was happy to see the

cake I ordered after what happened.

That was when I found out my 20-something deadbeat of a cousin almost

got my cake order cancelled by pretending to be me! My aunt, his mom,

found out because she had noticed that a lot of calls on her phone bill were

being made out to local florists, wedding dress stores and even bakeries.

Apparently, it took a while but he fessed up.

That was when my cousin admitted that he called around to cancel

anything I might have ordered as a prank.. So yeah, I almost didn't have a

wedding cake because of the actions of my cousin.. Which by the way, jokes

on you Ryan because I DIY-ed most of my wedding.

Weddings often involve dozens of fragile plans that depend on vendors, deadlines, and trust.

Most couples expect weather problems or last-minute mistakes. Few expect a relative to deliberately sabotage the celebration and later describe it as a prank.

OP’s cousin did not make one impulsive phone call.

He apparently contacted several florists, dress shops, and bakeries while pretending to be the bride and attempting to cancel her orders.

That pattern required planning, repetition, and knowledge that disrupting wedding arrangements would cause distress.

The fact that the cake survived only because the bakery had created a password system for exactly this type of interference shows how serious the behavior could have been.

The bakery deserves considerable credit.

Its verification procedure protected both the business and OP from a malicious cancellation that might otherwise have been discovered too late to fix.

It is disturbing that disgruntled relatives interfere with weddings frequently enough for a local bakery to need such a policy, but in this case, one simple security measure prevented a major disappointment.

The cousin may insist that he intended only to create confusion before eventually revealing the joke.

However, a prank normally depends on everyone being able to laugh after the surprise is over.

That distinction matters here.

A cancelled cake could have meant lost deposits, emergency expenses, arguments with vendors, and unnecessary anxiety immediately before the wedding.

Because the cousin targeted multiple orders, his success could have affected far more than dessert.

He was gambling with someone else’s money and memories while assuming he would not have to experience the consequences.

The family’s response should therefore focus less on whether the wedding ultimately turned out well and more on accountability.

OP would be justified in limiting what information this cousin receives about future events.

Vendor passwords, private schedules, and restricted access are reasonable precautions when someone has already demonstrated a willingness to impersonate her.

Forgiveness, should it ever come, does not require restoring immediate trust.

The cake arrived, the wedding continued, and OP’s decision to create much of the celebration herself unintentionally defeated most of the attempted sabotage.

That outcome is satisfying, but it does not make the cousin’s behavior less alarming.

A failed act of cruelty is still an act of cruelty, even when the ribs, flowers, and wedding cake turn out perfectly.

Here’s what others had to say:

These commenters said Ryan’s actions were cruel bullying, not a harmless prank

a-real-life-dolphin − What a d__k! I hate when people are cruel and call it a

prank. That is not a prank, it’s simply being an a__hole.

atticdoor − I mean, what was the punchline even going to be?   The bride in

tears because nothing for her wedding was there?   How was it ever going

to be funny?

4me2knowit − Pranking is quite simply bullying

These commenters supported giving Ryan a memorable taste of his own medicine

Sassy-Peanut − Op-When you devise a suitably damaging revenge on Ryan

for attempting this, please update us. The little jerk deserves something

uber crushing after trying that. In your place I wouldn't have been nearly so

sanguine about it.

FrizzWitch666 − A prank? I would have had such a revenge he would have

stayed away for the rest of our lives

mzg72 − Just tell him your husband is thinking about pranking him back.

You won't have to do anything. Trust me

These commenters were relieved the sabotage failed and believed Ryan should be removed from OP’s life

croptopweather − I kind of wish you could’ve found out sooner so you

could uninvite him! I’m glad he wasn’t able to do any damage at least.

Viperbunny − That's not a prank. He was trying to cause you pain and strife.

I would completely cut him out of your life. That is so unhinged. Who has

time to do this kind of s__t? ! I am so sorry that he tried this and so glad it

didn't work.

These commenters praised the bakery’s security measures while regretting that such precautions are necessary

Freaky_fiber − I'm glad the bakery outsmarted him but I feel kinda sad that

it's necessary

selkieisbadatgaming − I laughed when my baker asked for a safe word, but

she was dead serious and I’m just appalled by how n__ty some people are

because they think it’s funny or being vindictive.

OP thought the wedding cake issue was just a small vendor hiccup until she discovered someone had deliberately tried to sabotage her wedding preparations.

A cousin’s idea of a “prank” nearly ruined a major part of her special day and forced the bakery to deal with fake cancellation attempts.

Thankfully, the safe word system protected the order and the cake arrived as planned.
