The quest for a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series continues, but with a change in direction. Paramount+, which initially greenlit the project, has decided to move on from its planned series based on the popular role-playing game.
Nearly a year and a half after ordering an eight-episode season in January 2023, Paramount+ has opted not to proceed with the series. Originally envisioned as a co-production between Hasbro’s entertainment arm, eOne, and Paramount Pictures, the project’s future seemed secure. However, eOne’s acquisition by Lionsgate in December 2023 shifted the landscape.
With eOne out of the picture, Hasbro Entertainment, Hasbro’s in-house production division, has taken charge. The series will undergo a creative overhaul before being presented to new potential partners and streaming platforms. This revamp will include a new creative team, replacing the team led by creator Rawson Marshall Thurber and showrunner Drew Crevello.
Despite the setback at Paramount+, Hasbro remains dedicated to bringing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series to life. The franchise holds significant value for Hasbro, existing alongside the successful 2023 film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and the recently launched Broadway show “The Twenty-Sided Tavern.
The Dungeons & Dragons franchise, known for its captivating blend of fantasy creatures, epic quests, and strategic gameplay, has captivated players for nearly 50 years. With over 50 million players worldwide, the game continues to inspire video games, livestreamed entertainment, and now, the pursuit of a live-action series.
Paramount, facing its own period of transition with potential buyers circling the company, might not be the final destination for the Dungeons & Dragons series. Hasbro’s search for a new home for the project ensures that the adventure continues, albeit on a different path.
