“I Am Right”: FIL Explodes When Confronted About Creepy Behaviors

by Charles Butler

in Social Issues

A family dinner took a deeply uncomfortable turn.

A woman (OP) and her husband watched her father-in-law pull over a young waitress (who wasn’t even their server) to whisper “compliments” in her ear. When they tried to address it in private later, the FIL launched into a furious, misogynistic tirade that left them stunned.

Now, read the full, cringe-worthy story:

"I Am Right": FIL Explodes When Confronted About Creepy Behaviors
Not the actual photo

AITA for calling out my FIL for flirting with a waitress in front of the whole family?

My mom, husband, son, MIL, FIL and I were out to eat. My son is 5, my husband + I are late 30s. Our parents are late 60s.

We were enjoying our drinks, waiting for our food when my FIL waved over a waitress (not the one who was serving us) leaned in,

and whispered in her ear, “Can I pay you a compliment? I love your hair, it looks beautiful.” She said thanks and went back to work.

For additional context we are white and this waitress is black. I felt shocked and pissed that he would do that to a woman at work,

and also in front of his wife and grandson! When I was a teen, I worked service jobs and having men leer at me was gross.

They were visiting us and that night when we put our son to bed my husband and I tried to have a “calling in.” My husband said,

“Dad, that was extremely inappropriate.” FIL got defensive and said he did nothing wrong and not to call him a bad person.

I said, “You aren’t a bad person but what you did was cringe. I always hated getting hit on at work.” He got defensive.

I’ve known him for 20 years, never seen him so mad. He told us he was right, he made that woman’s day and women want attention from men.

I said “she works for tips!” He told us he is a good person, the best person we will ever meet. He compared himself to a friend of ours,

a local community leader who died recently leading to a huge outpouring of grief and a large funeral I spoke at. I was taken aback

but I said “yes you are just as good a person as Friend, and if we were in a bar that would have been very smooth. But you shouldn’t hit...

It’s not appropriate, the other person can’t say no.” He said he was not hitting on this waitress he was just overcome with her beauty

and he had to say something. He said that if he wanted to he would have “pulled her.”. I said “you’re not helping your case.”

Then he started ranting about how my husband and I are the reason for incels, dating apps have ruined society because no one flirts in the real world anymore

and gay and trans people now have more rights than straight people. He also told me that when I was 18 being harassed by men 3x my age at work

I should have enjoyed the attention and been happy I was so beautiful men noticed me. FIL and I have gotten into debates before.

Our outlooks on life are somewhat similar but different enough for conversations to be interesting. But he took this so personally probably because it was about his behavior.

Instead of leaving it as “I disagree” or “let’s agree to disagree” he said “I am right. I’ve never been more right. I make everyone around me happy.

You are wrong and your whole generation needs to be told to shut up.” Reasons I think my husband and I might be the [bad guys]:

His private conversations are none of our business. I think we hurt his feelings and I’m not happy about that. Perhaps we could have been more gentle or tactful.

My skin is crawling. That feeling of secondhand embarrassment when someone in your group does something awful to a service worker is bad enough. But the FIL’s reaction… that’s not just “old-fashioned.” That’s a full-blown narcissistic explosion.

He didn’t just get defensive. He went on the attack, dragging incels, gay rights, and the OP’s own teen trauma into it to avoid a single ounce of accountability. This is chilling.

He proved, in that one rant, that his “compliment” was never about her. It was about him and his perceived right to “notice” and “pull” women, regardless of the context.

This story is a perfect, painful example of a massive power imbalance. The FIL knew exactly what he was doing. He didn’t do this to a CEO or a police officer. He did it to a young woman, a Black woman, who could not tell him to get lost because, as the OP rightly said, “she works for tips!”

This is far from a harmless “compliment.” It’s a daily, exhausting reality for service workers. A 2021 report from One Fair Wage, “Tipped Over the Edge,” found that a staggering 76% of female restaurant workers reported being harassed or stalked by customers.

The FIL wasn’t “making her day”; he was likely being the 10th guy that shift to make her feel small, objectified, and unsafe.

His defense that he was just “overcome with her beauty” is a classic example of what psychologists call “benevolent sexism.” It’s sexism dressed up as a compliment.

Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne, writing for Psychology Today, explains that benevolent sexism frames women as “pure creatures who should be protected, cherished, and put on a pedestal.”

While that sounds “nice,” Dr. Whitbourne notes it’s just as harmful as hostile sexism because it “reinforces the idea that women are weak” and only valued for their beauty, not their competence.

The FIL’s rant proves this. He told the OP she should have enjoyed being harassed as a teen. He doesn’t see women as people. He sees them as objects for male “attention.”

His rage wasn’t about a compliment. It was about his perceived right to exert power over a captive audience being questioned.

Check out how the community responded:

Redditors were united: The OP was not the [bad guy], but the FIL was a massive creep. His unhinged, misogynistic rant just proved her point.

cheeriosman − NTA, it was the additional comments that FIL made that made him seem like even more of a creep.

Sounds entitled and very old-fashioned. If he was being a creep to waitresses, definitely deserved to be called out.

[Reddit User] − NTA, [f---] his feelings. he was rightfully called out for being a sexist creep.

[Reddit User] − Of course your NTA and you were plenty tactful, you didn't call him out right then and there at dinner.

Do you really think you need to be more gentle with a man who is harassing waiters and thinks your whole generation needs to be told to shut up?

muhanX − NTA. Yes, you go to work wanting strange men calling you over to whisper about your looks. Yes, that's what every woman and retail worker wants. (Sarcasm)

No. That's creepy af. That's old school mysogynist vibe stuff. That waitress is there to take orders, serve orders, and get paid.

She is not there as an object of display. ...As to private conversation, if you could hear it, it's not that private.

Specks-2021 − NTA. But your father is a massive [jerk]. And definitely NOT a good person, btw. Sexist, stereotyping,

self-absorbed, and completely unable to acknowledge when he’s wrong. His rant was gaslighting 101.

Others, including a 20-year-old waitress, confirmed this isn’t “flirting,” it’s harassment. They are sick of it, and it’s almost always from older men.

No-Tomorrow-4431 − NTA and some of these people sticking up for FIL have never waitressed a day in their life.

Im a full time waitress in a hotel bar( they also serve food) and the amount of times I’ve been cat called or had [sexual] remarks made to me and...

Oh and 95% of them are by old men too and I’m only 20 years old :) *edit : Spelling

A few users pointed out that the FIL’s extreme, defensive reaction (“I am right. I’ve never been more right.”) is a huge red flag and that the OP’s son doesn’t need to be around that.

C_Majuscula − NTA. Methinks he doth protest too much. In case you haven't already discussed this with your husband, your son does not need this kind of influence growing up.

blueberryxxoo − NTA I wonder what his response would have been had his wife called over a young waiter and said " Can I pay you a compliment? I just...

One “old lady” shared a harrowing, powerful account of a lifetime of harassment and predatory men, confirming the OP’s fears and validating her decision to speak up.

mrshellcat2u − Old lady here, just a bit older than your FIL. When I was 12, men 3 times my age were telling me how beautiful I was,

I was also asked out by them on a regular basis. When I informed them of my age, more than half would say “I thought you were 18 or 20”...

As I got older it only got worse. I put up with frequent obscene phone calls that scared me, especially when they would tell me what I was wearing...

My mom had deadbolts put on all the doors I was also raped during this time by a complete stranger. Ten years later I met up with my friends from...

and 4 of us stayed later than the others. Of the 4 of us, 3 of us had been raped, the other barely escaped it. It got to a point...

and I just walked out and quit. His wife called and wanted to know why I left so abruptly and I told her exactly the reason, and she called me...

My point is, all females have had to deal with men who thought they were the one who could get to us one way or another.

We’ve all put up with it all our lives and having some old man telling a beautiful waitress how beautiful her hair is, is just another man trying to get...

that belongs to a female who finds him disgusting. If all things were equal, that waitress could have slapped your FIL and told him that he was just another creepy...

n a string of creepy old men and to STFU, if he knows what’s good for him. This crap where men have preyed on women ( and that’s exactly what...

has been around since time began, and if we don’t speak up and point out the wrong, there’s no chance it will ever end. We, as women, girls and those...

You, OP, are totally NTA, I only wished you would have told him, that when females hear that kind of stuff, we immediately put our guard up,

because we know that we are dealing with a predatory animal that is capable of tremendous harm.

One user asked a very relevant question.

Satomi_novae − Info: how did his wife take it?

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

The OP and her husband actually did everything right. They didn’t make a scene at the restaurant. They waited, brought it up in private, and used “I” statements (“I felt,” “I hated it when…”). This is the textbook way to “call someone in.”

The FIL’s reaction, however, shows that he is not a person who can be “called in.” He is not open to reflection. His rage, his deflection (“you’re the reason for incels”), and his pathological self-aggrandizing (“I’m the best person you’ll ever meet”) are signs of a person completely incapable of accountability.

At this point, the OP’s duty is no longer to her FIL’s feelings, but to her 5-year-old son. She needs to have a firm conversation with her husband: “Your father’s views are toxic. We will not allow him to speak like this in front of our son.”

They must be a united front, prepared to set hard boundaries. This might mean limiting contact or being prepared to leave the moment he starts another rant.

The OP and her husband were not the [bad guys]. They tried to gently correct an inappropriate behavior. In return, they got a terrifying window into the FIL’s dark, misogynistic, and narcissistic worldview.

What do you think? Was the FIL’s rant a sign of dementia, or just his true colors shining through? And how do you handle a family member who is this aggressively, proudly wrong?
