Redditor Cranks Out Twelve Extra Sets After Woman Kicks Water Bottle Off Gym Sled

A gym-goer was grinding through the final sled push of the night, drenched and alone in a blissfully quiet Friday gym, when some random woman decided to punt their water bottle across the floor like it owed her money. Instead of packing up, the owner snapped.

What should’ve been one last set exploded into thirteen brutal bonus rounds, each push heavier with pure spite, the sled screeching louder than the kicker’s entitlement. The whole place watched in stunned silence as the Avenger refused to leave until the message landed: mess with someone’s stuff and you’ll pay in sweat and humiliation.

A Redditor takes petty gym revenge after a woman kicked their water bottle reserving her machine.

Not the actual photo.

“You can’t use water bottle to reserve gym machine” okay bet

I have been going to this gym for about six months now and I always try to avoid going past 7 PM because the vibes are off.

However, yesterday, I had no choice but to go around 8 PM. To my surprise, the gym was almost empty, maybe because it was Friday.

Anyway, I took advantage of the empty gym to do five sets of sled pushes.

I don’t like doing them when the gym is crowded because people walk through the track all the time and that annoys me.

I started doing my 40-meter sled pushes, and after every round, I’d put my water bottle on top of the weights while I sat on the floor next to it...

The water bottle being there and me being maybe 2-3 feet away is enough to let other people know that the sled is currently in use.

However, even if you’re not sure, seeing the bottle should at least prompt you to look around and see who it belongs to.

I was sitting on the floor resting before my last set when a woman walked to the sled and KICKED my water bottle (a hydro flask).

I took my headphones off, and the conversation went like this:

Me: "Hi, excuse me! That’s my water bottle, I’m using the sled at the moment!" (As friendly as I could be).

Her: "You’re not using it, are you? You’re sitting on the floor."

Me: "I’m in between sets, which is why my bottle is there so people know it’s in use."

Her: "Well, you can’t use a water bottle to reserve a machine that you’re clearly not using."

At this point, I got up and stood between her and the sled.

Me: "As I said, I was resting between sets. I’ve not finished my sets yet. But by all means, feel free to wait until I’m finished."

I then started pushing the sled one way and then back. When I got to the start position again,

she started walking towards the sled, thinking I was going to walk away. Oh, baby no. Here is where the petty revenge started.

I sat on the sled weights while resting because, as she said, I couldn’t use my water bottle to show people it was in use, so I was just going...

She got really angry and said: "What are you doing?"

Me: "Resting between sets. I know now I can’t reserve the machine with a water bottle, so I’m just going to sit here while I rest."

Her: "This is unbelievable. How many sets do you have left?"

Me: "I don’t know, a few more."

I put my headphones back in and started another set. She was still waiting. So I did another set. She was still there. I did another.

At this point, my legs felt like jelly, and I could barely finish my sets, but she was still waiting for the sled.

It had been like 15 minutes, and I forced myself to keep going out of spite.

She looked so angry and was trying to talk to me, but I had my headphones in and blasting music, ignoring her.

I ended up doing 12 extra sets until she walked away. I started unloading my weights from the sled when a group of three gym bros asked if I was...

As I walked away towards the changing room, she saw me and walked towards the sled track just to find the three gym bros loading it.

I could see the disappointment in her face when she saw them.

The best part is that if she had been a decent human being, I would’ve been done in a minute

and she could’ve had the sled all to herself, because I only had one set left originally.

Edit: the bottle was a Hydroflask, not a single use plastic one. And I was on a timed 60 second rest between sets, not camped at machine!

Let’s be honest: gym drama is the unofficial cardio of modern life. One minute you’re minding your own sets, the next you’re starring in an episode of “Entitled People of Fitness.” What started as a simple rest between sled pushes spiraled into a 15-minute standoff because someone couldn’t handle the universal “water bottle = I’m still using this” signal.

On one side, the Sled Avenger was following a norm recognized in gyms worldwide: leaving a personal item to claim temporary ownership while resting nearby. On the other, the woman saw an “empty” sled and decided rules (and basic courtesy) didn’t apply. It’s classic territory friction: both sides feel morally right, yet only one walked away with quads of steel and internet glory.

These micro-conflicts actually reveal bigger patterns in shared spaces. A 2022 study published in the journal Psychology of Sport and Exercise found that perceived violations of gym etiquette are one of the top three stressors for regular gym-goers, ranking alongside crowded facilities and loud music. Researchers noted that unclear norms about “hogging” equipment often spark hostility, especially when people feel anonymously judged.

Stephanie Roth Goldberg, LCSW, a psychotherapist specializing in sports psychology and eating disorder recovery, nails it: “Anger can feel like pent-up energy that needs a release.”

Sound familiar? The woman’s kick of the bottle and the OP’s spite sets were both textbook examples of that pent-up energy erupting in the heat of the moment, transforming a routine rest into a full-throttle territorial tussle.

Neutral ground solution? Communication, always. As most seasoned lifters say, a simple “Hey, are you still using this?” or “Mind if I work in?” defuses 99% of these situations. The real workout villain here isn’t the sled, it’s the refusal to treat fellow sweaters like human beings.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

Some people cheer OP’s spiteful extra sets as perfect petty revenge against a rude gym camper.

StangF150 − Tell the truth OP, you did NOT walk out of there "Like A Boss" but with legs of spite jello!! LoL

9lobaldude − That’s what happens when you behave like an AH. Nice petty revenge, I bet that afterwards your legs were burning

CallipygianP − "Nice quads, bro. What's your secret?" "Spite."

Over-Marionberry-686 − Still my favorite new petty person. Go massage your legs

Some people laugh at the situation and say the woman unintentionally motivated OP to train harder.

Marrsvolta − That girl is secretly hired by the gym to p__s people off enough to get them to put more reps in, you were tricked

CoderJoe1 − She just had to bottle up her frustration.

octaviaandowen − True definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face, and I'm here for it.

Others strongly support proper gym etiquette and say the woman was wrong for not letting OP work in.

WildBilll33t − Man, people need to learn how to just ask to work in. Like jeez.

9/10 times, the answer is an enthusiastic, "Yeah, sure!" 1/10 times it's "nah, I don't think we can set that up effectively, but I'll be done in about 3-5 minutes."

[Reddit User] − People who camp out at machines forever suck.

[Reddit User] − Currently at the gym reading this in-between my sets.

Honestly it's proper gym etiquette to ask if someone is using a piece of equipment they are standing next to.

I ask even if they are next to something and using a different piece of equipment just to make sure they are doing superset or a compound set.

It's just a respect you show everyone in the gym. Shame on her for being so rude. No place for people like that in the gym.

compellinglymediocre − The idea that someone thinks that just because you’re resting you’re not using it is ABSURD. That literally goes against all gym etiquette

Some criticize OP for risking injury or hearing damage just to be petty.

beezzarro − Don't damage your own hearing out of spite OP. Friendly reminder

JustineDelarge − Gym etiquette is you let people work in. YTA.

In the end, one kicked water bottle turned a quick workout into an epic tale of spite, jello legs, and instant karma. Our Sled Avenger could’ve finished in sixty seconds flat… but thanks to a total lack of chill, they gifted us all a reminder that courtesy costs zero reps.

So tell us: was the 12-extra-set revenge justified, or did entitlement win the day? Would you have kept pushing, or waved the white towel? Drop your hottest takes below, we’re ready to hear who’s team Petty and who’s team Please-Just-Ask!
